WHAT TYPES OF SERVICES DOES THE CHORE SERVICE PROGRAM PROVIDE?

CHORES Program Gets the Job Done!CHORES is a grant funded program designed to help older adults with deep cleaning, decluttering, seasonal yard clean up and packing or unpacking during a move. Last month SRC’s CEO, John Zabawa joined the CHORES crew to experience rst-hand what a day in the eld is like: here is his report.

As President and CEO, I have few opportunities to personally interact with those we serve. I started out as a program coordinator at SRC Evergreen in the 1980’s – but it’s been many years since I’ve provided direct services to our wonderful clients.

This past month, I got the incredible opportunity to experience the compassionate care we provide. First, I rode with Cheryl, a SRC ddriver, on her route to pick-up adult day participants and bring them to the program in Wheat Ridge. Not only did Cheryl have a strong bond with the participants, but also with the family caregivers who entrusted their loved ones’ care to her. It was a powerful interaction to observe.

After my ride along, I wanted to experience rst-hand our new CHORES Services program. Through this program, I performed housekeeping and maintenance for an older adult living in the metro area.

Amy’s story is a heartbreaking one. Within a short period of time she experienced the loss of her husband, her mother and of her son who son who was murdered. As a result, she has been grief stricken and unable to move forward with her life.

Loretta, our Chores Services Manager, develops trusting, caring relationships with all our clients but had a particularly deep bond with Amy (name changed for her privacy.). Loretta’s relationship opened the door for me to be involved in her life as well. As I was cleaning her home, we talked and I gained insight into the impact SRC has had on her life. The tasks we performed were so much more than improving her physical environment, we were also supporting her emotionally and helping her to heal and move beyond her deep grief.

I hI have had the pleasure of visiting Amy on two separate occasions. It has left me feeling so grateful and humbled by the miracles performed daily by our staff – which the word “amazing” is inadequate to describe the dedicated individuals working for SRC.

• Organization and clean out of house or apartment areas / preparing house for inspection• Packing and unpacking of household items for moving• Deep cleaning of bathrooms / kitchens / oors/ cabinets / etc.• First oor window washing / inside windows on any oor• Cleaning closets / storage areas• Trash clean up and removal to available receptacle• Cleaning porches / decks / patios•• Seasonal yard clean up

Dear Friends:

Things are changing in the world of aging services. Having dedicated my career for over 33 years to this eld, I have seen concepts related to aging advance and services for older adults change in signicant ways. Vast improvements are underway and consequently, “aging” will never be the same! First, the longevity of Americans has grown over the last 50+ years from 66.6 years for men and 73.1 years for women in 1960, (U.S. Census) to whwhat it is today: 77.4 year for men and 82.2 years for women (World Health Organization,2013). This means that a greater percent of the U.S. population will be comprised of older adults and services for them will respond accordingly. In fact, the service industry for seniors has grown nationwide. There are basically ve types of supportive care options that make up what is widely known as Long Term Care Services (LTCS.)

These are: • Adult Day & Respite Services, • assisted living/residential community settings, • home health agencies, • nursing homes and • hospices.

Seniors’ Resource Center (SRC) has specialized in care options, including Adult Day & Respite Services, that allow elderly individuals to safely live at home for as long as possible. On a typical day at SRC, over 45 adult day participants will experience a wide rrange of choices. Many of their family caregivers remain in the workforce and for them, SRC programs represent the means to continue with their careers and manage their days knowing that quality care is provided for their family member who is in need of assistance.

Check out our newly designed website at www.SRCaging.org or call our main office at 303.238.8151 to set up a time for a tour when you are considering how to manage issues related to aging.

Sincerely,

John ZabJohn ZabawaPresident/CEO

Adult Day & Respite Services Adult Day & Respite Services (ADRS) at SRC is an option worth exploring for caregiversin need of support for their on-going challenges as they juggle caregiving for a loved one with work schedules and their weekly activities.

ADRS provides just the right mix of relaxation and activities that are customized for older adults with a variety of needs and chronic conditions, and specializing in the cacare of those with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory care needs. Within the walls of our17,000 square foot building there are options to appeal to our discerning families and their aging loved ones who can no longer remain at home safely for hours at a time. The beauty of this service is that ADRS allows families to stay together and often can delay or even prevent placement into long term residential facilities.

ADRS provides a long list of activities such as:

• art classes

• horticultural therapy

• gentle exercise to help maintain mobility and balance

• music therapy

• delicious meals prepared by our on-site chef

All of our programs are provided by caring staff members, who are trained Leaders in Dementia Care. SRC provides these services in an atmosphere of respect and joy within our beautiful, light lled building.

WWith a rapidly growing population of older adults, our ADRS service will continue to be there to provide for an increasing community need. In the age 71+ population, 13.9% have some type of dementia or Alzheimer’s and this is the most common factor for opting to use long term care services. ADRS can provide a means for families and society to save money, while giving participants enjoyable days and assistance with personal care needs in a safe and nurturing environment.
