The NSW Government is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people and this commitment is further shown by hosting the 2014 NSW Aboriginal Health Awards (the Awards). The Awards are an important opportunity to celebrate excellence in delivering high quality health care to Aboriginal people of NSW.

This year, the Awards will be held on the evening of Thursday 13 November 2014 at the Ivy Ballroom in Sydney between 6.30pm to 10.30pm. The Awards ceremony will follow the annual Closing the Gap progress meeting on Aboriginal Health as part of NSW Government election commitments. It is anticipated that up to 300 people will attend the event.

Since their inception in 2004, the Awards have evolved in response to state and national policy developments, and reforms to the health system. The 2014 Awards provides an opportunity for NSW to recognise achievements of our efforts against the NSW Government’s commitment of closing the gap that are reflected in the

• NSW 2021: A plan to make NSW number one

• NSW State Health Plan – Towards 2021• NSW Statement of Intent & NSW

Aboriginal Health Partnership• NSW Aboriginal Health Plan 2013 – 2023All these initiatives convey a commitment to work together particularly with Aboriginal people to address the service delivery and health disparities evident throughout the health sector between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples.

NSW ABORIGINAL HEALTH AWARDS

Any sponsorship undertaken with NSW Health must be in accordance with NSW Health’s Sponsorships Policy Principles (PD2005_415). NSW Health is proud of its reputation and will not accept sponsorship from Organisations that are involved with the manufacture and production of tobacco and alcohol related products, or produce products/services that could damage health, or conflicts with the priorities of NSW Health.

Sponsorship PrinciplesThe main points of the policy are:

Principle 1 – a sponsorship arrangement should not impose or imply conditions that would limit, or appear to limit, NSW Health’s ability to carry out its functions fully and impartially.

Principle 2 – there should be no real or apparent conflict between the mission and objectives of NSW Health and those of the sponsor.

Principle 3 – NSW Health should neither seek nor accept sponsorship from persons or bodies that are, or are likely to be, subject to regulation or inspection by NSW Health during the life of the sponsorship.

Principle 4 – Sponsorship of NSW Health activities or events should not involve explicit or implicit endorsement of the Sponsor or the Sponsor’s products or services.

Principle 5 – Where sponsorship takes the form of provision of a sponsor’s product, the product should still be evaluated for its fitness for purpose against objective operational criteria, which are relevant to the organisation’s needs.

Principle 6 – It is inappropriate for any employee of NSW Health to receive a personal benefit from a Sponsorship.

Principle 7 – In most circumstances, the public interest is best served by making sponsorship opportunities widely known, that is, by calling for expressions of interest or using other broadly based mechanisms.

Principle 8 – Sponsorship proposals should be assessed against transparent criteria that are publicly available.

Principle 9 – All Sponsorships should be documented in a written agreement.

Principle 10 – All Sponsorships are to be approved by the Chief Executive or another delegated senior officer of the relevant Public Health Organisation.

Principle 11 – All Sponsorships are to be reported annually in the relevant Annual Report.

Principle 12 – Sponsored projects need to be supported by sufficient resources.

Principle 13 – All Sponsorships are to be monitored and their outcomes evaluated.
