What is a Gyrene? The origin of the name “Gyrene” has been the subject of much controversy over the years. First applied to Marines as a jocular reference by other branches of the service, the Marines quickly adopted it as an affectionate, self-descriptive phrase - one that made them stand out from other services. During World Wars I and II the phrase “GI” was applied to all service members as being “Gov-ernment Issue.” Then and now, Gyrene was understood to be special kind of “government issue” - a “government issue Marine,” or “Gyrene.” While not a commonly used term today, it is remembered with great nostalgia by older Americans who identify the name with that special breed of young men who fought the desperate battles of Belleau Wood and the island campaigns of the Pacific. These men formed the battle history of the United States Marine Corps and fashioned an ethos that inspires the men and women who serve in today’s Marine Corps.

7SOFTBALL 2014

2014 Lady Gyrenes Softball Season PreviewThe Ave Maria University softball program will look to build off a successful 2013 campaign when they take the field to open the 2014 season on Saturday.

The Lady Gyrenes return eight starters and 14 letter-winners from the 2013 squad that notched a runner-up finish at the USCAA Small College World Series National Championship and collected the program’s first 20-win season.

The Green and Blue are poised to challenge each of their conference opponents for their first Sun Conference championship in 2014. According to fourth year head coach Tim Speakman, the team is also hungry for a second straight appearance at the USCAA National Tournament in Akron, Ohio. With a final record of 22-27, the 2013 season became a season of firsts for the Green and Blue. The program played in its first USCAA National Tournament and the 22 wins established a new program record for season victories.

Not satisfied with last year’s program-best records, the Lady Gyrenes look to improve in every area this season while playing a very challenging series of games. AMU will launch their season on their home turf on Feb. 1 as they welcome NCAA Division II Nova Southeastern to the AMU Softball Field. “The month of February and the beginning of March will truly test our team,” Speakman said. “We are playing a tough non-conference schedule in preparation for top notch Sun Conference play and into the post-season.” Pitchers

Returning on the mound as the foundation of the Lady Gyrenes pitching staff are senior right-hander Beth Vaccarezza and junior lefty Emily Lemin. Both will look to build off solid junior and sophomore seasons that saw them take the bulk of the pitching load in 2013. Vaccarezza and Lemin were both named USCAA Academic All-Americans and Lemin also received USCAA HonorableMention All-American accolades. The duo will be complimented by junior right-handers Cheyenne Benson and Jessenia Gonzalez. A 2012 first team All-Sun Conference selection, Benson returns to the AMU line-up after sitting out her sophomore season with a torn posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). Sophomore Caitlin Constance along with senior Kayla Sterling will also see some significant time in relief to round out the staff. Catchers

Sophomore Sarah Vinci will be the main field general in charge of keeping the Lady Gyrenes pitching staff under control, a task that Vinci has proved more than capable of handling. Vinci finished her freshman campaign with a .973 fielding percentage, good for second on the team and registered a .293 batting average. Junior Cheyenne Benson along with freshmen Alyssa Colding and McKayla Jeter will provide depth for the Green and Blue behind the dish. Colding and Jeter will also see substantial time in the DP spot. Infielders

Senior Kayla Sterling, juniors Jessenia Gonzalez and Victoria Thompson, and sophomore Caitlin Constance pro-vide experience up the middle for Ave Maria. Gonzalez, a true utility player on the AMU roster, will see time all over the diamond, at both second and third base and on the mound. The three will be complemented by athletic freshmen Amber Presto and Miranda Dessecker. Sophomore Marlie Braddy provides consistent pop and a great glove and will anchor the defense at first base for the Lady Gyrenes this season. Freshmen Alyssa Colding and Brianna Alonso will also provide depth for AMU at first base. Five different Lady Gyrenes will split time at the hot corner, with senior Beth Vaccarezza and junior Cheyenne Benson leading the pack. Newcomers Brittany Blocker and Taylor Sterling will also see time in the infield for the Green and Blue. Outfielders

The Lady Gyrenes return a speedy veteran outfield that will be led by 2013 first team All- Sun Conference selec-tion and USCAA All-American Kingsley Avery. Avery, along with twin sister Erika, junior Brandi Griswold and senior Alexandra Campbell will anchor the group. The four combined to swipe 68 bags in 83 attempts last season. The AMU squad finished the 2013 campaign ranked #3 in the NAIA in total stolen bases (132). Junior Sarah Dowdy as well as freshmen Rachel Curtiss and Nikki Woodard will also provide depth in the outfield. In speaking on his season outlook, Speakman noted “Our strengths will lie in the experience and depth of this team. In order for us to reach our true potential and be successful in all aspects of the game, it is necessary for true leaders to develop as the season gets underway.”

The Lady Gyrenes concluded their first 20-win season in the history of the program with a 22-27 overall record. After a season plagued by injuries team-wide, they received a bid to the USCAA Softball Small College World Series in Akron, Ohio as a No. 7 seed. They went on to win five games at the USCAA Championships before falling in the final to the Lynx of Lindenwood University-Belleville.

Aside from the team accomplishments, the Lady Gyrenes received several individual accolades over the course of the season. Two Lady Gyrenes were named Sun Conference softball player or pitcher of the week; Emily Lemin for the week ending March 10th and Kingsley Avery for the week ending March 31st. Beth Vaccarezza was named to the Sun Conference All-Academic team and teammate Kingsley Avery garnered first team all-conference accolades at the TSC awards banquet. The same two Lady Gyrenes were also named USCAA national softball player or pitcher of the week; Emily Lemin and Kingsley Avery for the week ending March 10th.and Lemin again for the week ending March 24th. Additionally, Lemin and Avery were named to the USCAA All-American teams. Lemin received honorable-mention All-American accolades and Avery was named to the second team. Ave Maria Mission Statement

Ave Maria University

Founded in fidelity to Christ and His Church in response to the call of Vatican II for greater lay witness in con-temporary society, Ave Maria University exists to further teaching, research, and learning at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the abiding tradition of Catholic thought in both national and international settings. The University takes as its mission the sponsorship of a liberal arts education curriculum dedicated, as articu-lated in the apostolic constitution Ex Corde Ecclesiae, to the advancement of human culture, the promotion of dialogue between faith and reason, the formation of men and women in the intellectual and moral virtues of the Catholic faith, and to the development of professional and pre-professional programs in response to local and societal needs.

As an institution committed to Catholic principles, the University recognizes the importance of creating and maintaining an environment in which faith informs the life of the community and takes expression in all its programs.

Ave Maria University Athletics Department Mission Statement

The Ave Maria University Athletics Department strives to enable students to live out Pope John Paul II’s vision of sports and the overall idea of physical, moral and social development through her athletic programs. Therefore, our athletic programs are developed and maintained in an environment where academic pursuits have priority and all students are expected to maintain the proper balance between athletics and academics. To this end, the Athletics Department seeks to:

• Be a community of scholar athletes, coaches and staff whose primary focus is to achieve academic excel-lence while also striving to produce teams and individuals who are committed to athletic competition and outstanding performance.

• Support of the broader Division of Student Affairs Mission Statement in terms of enhancing the develop-ment of the total person.

• Field disciplined and competitive student-athletes and teams committed to the highest level of sportsman-ship.

• Create an atmosphere of respect, fairness and graciousness among all of our constituencies including our own student-athletes, coaches, opponents, faculty, staff, alumni, supporters, fans and neighbors.
