ENHANCING DOWNTOWN KIRKWOOD:
PUBLIC AREA IMPROVEMENTS
Flower Planting and Seasonal Display Program
In 2013, the public area maintenance and planting partnership between Downtown Kirkwood Special Business District, City of Kirkwood Administration and Kirkwood Parks Department sprouted.
The Parks Department’s expertise and equipment was supplemented with Special Business District (SBD) funding to pay for personnel and materials to manage the public area landscaping in the SBD and the grounds around Kirkwood City Hall. One of the best things about this program is that the Parks Department has the ability to remove the large flower pots and pre-plant them at their facilities. The result was a jump-started and improved floral display that was professionally cared for throughout the season.
The SBD continued to manage and fund the holiday lighting displays placed on public property in the business district. And, the maintenance of the building lights on private properties that are part of the district’s Holiday Lighting Program.

PUBLIC AREA IMPROVEMENTS (continued)
Ken Connor Park Improvements Downtown Kirkwood and Kirkwood Troop 981 Eagle Scouts partnered to enhance the aesthetics of Ken Connor Park. In 2012, new benches were purchased by the SBD and assembled and placed by the scouts. The scouts assisted the Kirkwood Street Department in the removal of the concrete park furniture.
In 2013, the deteriorating wooden signs were removed from the park and replaced by a stone sign. The Parks Department reseeded the grass in front of the sign and in 2014 we hope to add plantings to the area. Also in 2013, the renovated park was used for the Kiwanis’ Halloween Walk hot dog give-away and the SBD placed Ralph Butler and a pianist in the park to create a festive atmosphere on Small Business Saturday. In 2014, the SBD will work with Kirkwood Electric to upgrade the power service to facilitate increased programming in the park.
New Business Directory Signs
In 2013, the district expanded on its wayfinding sign program. New business directory signs were designed, produced and placed by the SBD. The signs were designed to complement the existing public parking lot entrance signs. Six signs were placed in strategic locations for the benefit of pedestrians visiting downtown Kirkwood. The business directory signs will be updated periodically and the program will be expanded as needed.
Façade Improvement Program Funding
Several business and property owners took advantage of the district’s Façade Improvement Program. $7000 was allocated to the program and all of the funding is expected to be exhausted by the end of the fiscal year. Businesses participating in the program include Sole Comfort, Kirkwood Station Restaurant & Brewing Co., Fortel’s Pizza, Dr. Done, D.M.D., and Mike Duffy’s Pub & Grill.

KIRKWOOD FARMERS’ MARKET:
2013 SEASON REVIEW Despite growing competition for merchants, the market was filled with vendors offering customers high-quality, fresh produce, plants and specialty foods. (Last year, Missouri was the fastest-growing state for farmers’ markets.) We were able to recruit several new merchants whose offerings (organic chocolate, coconut butter, cut flowers, succulents) added to the market experience and customer satisfaction. This year, we welcomed programming provided by The Magic House and Kirkwood Public Library to the market and expanded the popular Tunes at Ten music series. The annual Peach Festival and Apple Festival continue to please our merchants and visitors.
In 2013, we were pleased to influence the city to include the replacement of the chain link fence behind the market property in the city’s fence project between the Memorial Walkway and the railroad tracks.
Also in 2013, we expanded our branding efforts by producing and selling a peach colored logo t-shirt, aprons and hooded sweatshirts. We sold these items
from our Information Station located in the market with the Veggie Valet. We are looking forward to increasing our merchandise sales in 2014. The Pumpkin Patch and Christmas Tree Market were once again successful and great attractions to downtown Kirkwood. The community enjoys the special activities of the pumpkin patch and the candies and unique products that are offered in the Gingerbread Shoppe as part of the annual Christmas Tree Market that is operated by one of our long-time merchants.

Downtown Kirkwood Winter Fireworks Festival Back by popular demand, as the expression goes, were the downtown fireworks. Fueled by the success of the 2012 partnership with the Parks Department to relocate the drought-displaced Freedom Festival the downtown fireworks are quickly becoming an annual tradition. Thanks to the help of our volunteer fundraisers, financial and organizational support from Downtown Kirkwood and guidance and support from the parks, fire and police departments the community enjoyed festivities and a wonderful fireworks display on an unseasonably warm day.
Downtown Kirkwood Summer Concert Series 2013 was the ninth season for the popular summer concert series which is coordinated kicked off in June each year by the SBD.
