Thank you so much for being here this evening! I can’t wait to shake your hand and say “thank you!”

You see, just by joining us tonight to celebrate these amazing honorees and OneJustice’s 35th birthday, you have already done so much to bring life-changing legal help to Californians in need.

Your presence here tonight will bring vital legal services to vulnerable communities – from domestic violence survivors in Los Angeles to low-income veterans in rural areas. Thank you!

And tonight we have a very special opportunity to double our impact.

You know that millions of low-income Californians face legal barriers to basic necessities – things like housing, freedom from violence, access to medical care, education and jobs. This is true throughout the state, but it is a crisis in rural and isolated communities. Too many people suffer needlessly from solvable legal problems simply because they lack access to the one resource that truly makes a difference – legal assistance from attorneys and law students.

The OneJustice Rural Justice Initiative changes that. Our award-winning Justice Bus Project – and the new Rural Justice Collaboration and Rural Justice Technology projects – reach the most remote corners of the state. And tonight we have a very special announcement.

The law firm Cooley LLP has made a generous commitment to advancing rural justice in California. Cooley has agreed to contribute $65,000 to fund the Rural Justice Collaborative this coming year to bring mobile legal clinics to many more isolated communities. And, they are challenging the OneJustice network to raise a matching $60,000 to keep expanding this important work.

That’s right. Cooley LLP is challenging all of us to raise $60,000 – tonight!

Thank you for joining the rest of the OneJustice network tonight to celebrate our 35th anniversary and the work of Silvia Argueta, Erika Rottenberg, and Dave Brick. All three of our honorees this evening have made significant contributions to California’s legal services and pro bono delivery systems. We are also proud to have OneJustice’s co-founders, Raymond Bonner and Trina Ostrander, as our masters of ceremony this evening.

Silvia Argueta is a nationally recognized leader in the civil legal aid community and a frequent partner with OneJustice on collaborative projects. In addition to her exemplary work as executive director of the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA), she serves on the Executive Committee of the California Project Directors Association and the Civil Policy Group of the National Legal Aid and Defenders Association (NLADA). OneJustice is very proud that Silvia is a graduate of the inaugural year of our Executive Fellowship, and we appreciate that she serves as a resource for the OneJustice Board as we expand our nonprofit management support for legal aid nonprofits around the state.

We are honored to recognize Erika Rottenberg’s dedication to service, as well as her outstanding leadership of the LinkedIn “legal eagles” in their collective commitment to pro bono. Under Erika’s leadership as Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, the LinkedIn legal department has participated in our Justice Bus Project and Bay Area Rural Justice Collaborative, with Erika traveling on the Justice Bus to provide assistance to immigrant youth. For these contributions and more, we present Erika with the 2014 Jack Londen Public Service Award, which is given each year to an outstanding attorney in the private sector who exemplifies a commitment to public service.

Last year, Dave Brick, a talented Bay Area filmmaker, decided to donate a free film to a nonprofit through an online voting contest on his website. OneJustice won with our idea to create a video to raise awareness about the power of legal services in rural California. This was a natural match to Dave’s prior work documenting the challenges faced by unincorporated rural communities, and Dave created a beautifully evocative film about rural justice, which you will see as part of the awards ceremony tonight.

Congratulations to our three honorees, and thank you all for being part of this evening’s celebration. On behalf of the OneJustice Board of Directors, Advisory Board, and staff, I also thank each of you for your commitment to securing access to justice for all.

Raymond BonnerPulitzer Prize Winner & Investigative ReporterRaymond Bonner’s life has been marked by incurable wanderlust, insatiable curiosity, and hopeless restlessness. As a lawyer, he was a JAG officer in the Marine Corps in Vietnam; worked for Ralph Nader in Washington, D.C.; opened the advocacy office for Consumers Union in San Francisco; headed the Consumer Fraud/White Collar Crime unit in the San Francisco District Attorney’s office; then established the Public Interest Clearinghouse (now OneJustice).

Dropping out of law, as it were, he went to Latin America, the unintended beginning of what was to become a journalism career; starting in Bolivia, then up to Central America, arriving in El Salvador on a Sunday, the American nuns were killed on Tuesday, and the rest is history. As a foreign correspondent for the New York Times, and staff writer for The New Yorker, he has lived on every continent (except Antarctica), and reported from more than a hundred countries -- inter alia Rwanda, Bosnia, Kurdistan, Ngorno Karabakh, Tajikistan, Somalia, Congo, Bali (for the bombings, not the beach).

He is the recipient of numerous journalism awards – Louis M. Lyons Award for Conscience and Integrity in Journalism from the Nieman Fellows at Harvard; New York Association of Black Journalists, for his reporting from Rwanda; Latin American Studies Association Award, for reporting from Central America; and a shared Pulitzer with other New York Times reporters on the transfer of technology to China. He is the author of four books. Weakness and Deceit: U.S. Policy in El Salvador received the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award. Waltzing With A Dictator: The Marcoses and the Making of American Policy won the Overseas Press Club and Sidney Hillman book prizes. Then he switched to Africa and conservation: “At the Hand of Man: Peril and Hope for Africa’s Wildlife. His most recent book, “Anatomy of Injustice: A Murder Case Gone Wrong,” has been described as the “book of the century about the death penalty.”

His most trumpeted achievement, however, is a 2:39:32 San Francisco Marathon (in 1978). After decades of wandering, he now lives in New York, but is hardly “settled,” spending several months in Sydney, Australia.

Raymond reconnected with OneJustice just five years ago, during the preparations for our 30th anniversary, when he traveled to participate in the celebration. Since then, he has been an active participant in the OneJustice network, and OneJustice was delighted to serve as the host for a 2012 event featuring him at the Commonwealth Club with remarks and Q&A about his book “Anatomy of Injustice.” OneJustice is incredibly honored to have Raymond’s continued involvement in our mission and work, and we greatly appreciate his service, together with OneJustice co-founder Trina Ostrander, as the Masters of Ceremony tonight. Thank you, Ray!

Trina OstanderBayerHealthCareTrina Ostrander is Associate Director of Public Policy & Communications for Bayer HealthCare in Berkeley, California. She is responsible for community and local government relations as well as corporate citizenship initiatives in the San Francisco Bay Area. She manages Bayer’s award-winning Making Science Make Sense education and workforce development program on the West Coast. Before joining Bayer in 2007, Trina was Executive Director of the Berkeley Public Education Foundation, where she worked for 13 years forging public/private partnerships to strengthen local public schools. Trina has also served as a consultant to political campaigns and non-profit organizations. In 1979, she co-founded the Public Interest Clearinghouse (now OneJustice), a resource center for California public interest lawyers and the first Public Interest Law Program on the West Coast, sponsored by a consortium of Bay Area law schools and housed at UC Hastings College of the Law.

Trina has only lived on one continent (she has set foot on three); she is third-generation southern Californian and has lived in Berkeley since her sophomore year at UC. She serves on the Executive Committee of Cal State East Bay’s Gateways Cradle to Career education partnership, the Education Advisory Committees of the East Bay Economic Development Alliance and BayBio (the biotech industry association), and the Board of the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce.

She is former Chair of the City of Berkeley’s Fair Campaign Practices Commission, and has served on the board of numerous non-profits. In 2013, Trina was honored as one of Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner’s “Women of the Year in STEM Education.”

OneJustice was very fortunate to reconnect with Trina during the preparations for our 30th anniversary celebration in 2009, and it was a great honor to have both Trina and Raymond Bonner – along with the organization’s four other prior executive directors– on the stage that evening. Trina continues to be actively involved in OneJustice’s efforts to ensure justice for all, including working with staff to plan the March 2012 event featuring Raymond Bonner in discussion of his “Anatomy of Injustice” book at the Commonwealth Club. Trina in a member of OneJustice’s Strategy Council, and we are so grateful for her continued support, including collaborating with Ray as our Masters of Ceremony this evening. Thank you so much, Trina!

Silvia Argueta has dedicated her career as a lawyer to advancing the rights of poor and marginalized communities in Los Angeles. She has been the Executive Director at the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) for four years. Silvia was born in Guatemala and immigrated to Southern California at the age of 6 along with her mother. She was the first in family to go to college and she credits her mother for empowering her and for being a wonderful model of strength, love and perseverance. Part of her father’s legacy to her was instilling values of hard work, fairness, and a belief that one should always question authority.

After graduating from UC Hastings College of the law, she was a Public Interest Law Fellow at the law firm of Litt and Stormer where she worked on cases ranging from police abuse to slum housing cases. She went on to the ACLU Foundation of Southern California where her work focused on civil rights litigation, poverty and jail conditions. She moved on to MALDEF where she worked on education, employment and immigration issues. Throughout her career, she has worked on cases ranging from police abuse, jail conditions, and human rights to a myriad of poverty issues. The common thread in all of her work has been the opportunity to work alongside some of the most courageous and progressive attorneys in Los Angeles. In 1999, she made her home with LAFLA. Prior to becoming the Executive Director, Silvia was a senior attorney working in the LAFLA Government Benefits Unit (and president of the Union). LAFLA has been providing civil legal services to low income Angelinos since 1929 and is the first place thousands of poor people turn to every year when they need legal assistance for a crisis that threatens their shelter, health and livelihood. Silvia is proud of LAFLA’s staff and their commitment to changing the lives of the clients they serve and the communities in which they live. On the national level, Silvia serves on the Civil Policy Group of the National Legal Aid and Defenders Association, where she chairs the Regulations Subcommittee. She is also a member of the Executive Committee of the California Project Directors Association, which OneJustice staffs. And we are deeply proud that Silvia is also a graduate of the inaugural year of the OneJustice Executive Fellowship. OneJustice is delighted to celebrate Silvia’s leadership on national, statewide and local legal services issues, as exemplified by depth and breadth of LAFLA’s work in changing the lives of thousands of Californians in need. Erika RottenbergLinkedInErika Rottenberg is responsible for worldwide legal affairs at LinkedIn. As General Counsel and Secretary of LinkedIn Corporation (NYSE LNKD), the world’s largest professional networking company, she helps drive LinkedIn’s mission of connecting the world’s professionals to make them more productive and successful. She is responsible for worldwide legal affairs, including corporate, privacy, public policy, commercial, litigation, intellectual property, employment, compliance, regulatory matters and non U.S. matters, as well as all other matters facing a fast-paced growing, public global internet company. Before joining LinkedIn, Erika served as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, for SumTotal Systems, a talent development enterprise software company and Vice President, Strategic Development and General Counsel at Creative Labs, the company that brought multimedia to the PC. She helped both companies navigate the regulatory policies and challenges specific to technology-centric public companies. Erika began her legal career at the Silicon Valley-based law firm of Cooley Godward Kronish in the litigation practice, focusing on employment law and corporate law, focusing on venture–backed companies, public offerings, newly public company issues, and M&A. Upon graduation from college, she lived in Anchorage, Alaska for five years where she taught junior high school special education, and was actively involved in the teachers’ union, including being the Chief Negotiator for the 2400 member strong local union teachers’ contract valued at US $250 Million. She holds a law degree from University of California Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law, and a BS in Special and Elementary Education from State University of New York at Geneseo. Her work and dedication has earned her numerous awards, including the Silicon Valley Business Journal’s “Best General Counsel Award,” alongside being awarded the 2013 “Most Innovative Lawyer” from the Financial Times US and National Law Journal’s list of “America’s 50 Outstanding General Counsel.” Erika is also passionate about the out of doors, and is an avid hiker, camper and cyclist, and is known for early morning hiking meetings. Erika serves on the Board of Directors of the Girl Scouts of Northern California, building girls of confidence courage and character and the Silicon Valley Law Foundation, the largest provider of pro bono legal services in Silicon Valley. Erika has also ridden her bike from Seattle to Boston, raising over $60,000 for breast cancer research. (See www.Erikasride.org )

Dave BrickBrick FilmOriginally from Kansas City, Dave Brick started playing with cameras at the age of 10 and has been finding ways to tell powerful stories ever since. Armed with a BA degree in Sociology from the University of Colorado, and with a desire to focus on socially purposeful work, Dave spent several years in the non-profit sector working as a program director in the education and micro-finance space.

His continued passion for storytelling, and an understanding of how a story well told could help multiply the impact of purposeful work, however, drove Dave back to his camera full time to become a filmmaker.

With courage, enthusiasm, determination and talent, Dave has built Brick Film, Inc. into a full-scale creative production agency. He helps non-profits and corporations tell their stories through engaging and actionable films. While business continues to grow, Brick takes great pride in the ability to help support his son Daniel and wife Andrea by making films that matter. They live in a sweet house in a vibrant and happy community in Oakland, CA.

Last year, Dave decided to donate his talents by creating a film for a nonprofit on a completely pro bono basis. He developed an online application and contest where nonprofits could pitch their ideas and compete to win a free film. OneJustice was already aware of Dave’s work on rural justice issues through his collaboration with California Rural Legal Assistance (CRLA) and PolicyLink to create a film documenting the challenges faced by rural, unincorporated communities in California, including lack of access to clean water, functioning sewer systems, sidewalks, and street lights. (You can view the resulting film “California Unincorporated” on Dave’s website, www.brick-film.com). With fingers crossed, OneJustice participated in Dave’s contest with the idea of doing a film that would portray the power of legal services in improving lives in rural areas of the state.

After 47 contest submissions and thousands of votes cast online, OneJustice was the contest winner and the recipient of Dave’s generosity with his time, energy, and talents. Guided by Dave’s expertise, OneJustice decided that the most powerful use of Dave’s generosity and talents would be a film that could be used by the entire legal services sector to relate the power of our work – through the lens of one client’s experience. With OneJustice’s focus on bringing life-changing legal help to isolated areas of the state, and Dave’s prior work on unincorporated communities, it was a natural fit to partner with Central California Legal Services (CCLS), which serves five counties in the heart of the Central Valley. We are honored to recognize Dave this evening for his dedication to the nonprofit sector and for his powerful film that tells the story of Mr. Florentino Salazar and his quest for justice. We are also delighted to share the film with you tonight. Dave, you are truly amazing – thank you!
