Attainment vs. Growth
Attainment: How did students do at one point in time. The reference point (national average attainment) is the same for all students in each grade level.
Growth: How did students improve from one year to the next? The reference point (national average growth) is different for each student based on their pretest score.
Growth scores are cohort-based, meaning students are measured against their individual performance in the previous year.

Definitions
Student-level measures
Average RIT score – An average the Spring 2014 RIT scores from each student. RIT scores are NWEA’s scale score values.
Percentage of students at or above national average attainment – the percentage of students whose 2014 RIT scores are equal to or greater than the national average RIT score for their grade-level.
Percentage of students meeting or exceeding national average growth – the percentage of students whose growth meets or exceeds the average national growth for students from the same grade-level with the same pretest RIT scores.

Included
Students in Grades 2-8 that took the NWEA MAP• For attainment measures, students that took the Spring SY2014 assessment• For growth measures, students that took both the Spring SY2014 assessment and either the Spring
SY2013 or Fall SY2014 assessment as a pretest.
All school types (charter, magnet, selective enrollment, charter)
Excluded
Students whose scores were invalidated by NWEA or CPS
Students taking the wrong assessment type or grade level
English Learners with an ACCESS Literacy score less than 3.5 at the time of the test.
Students expected to take the Illinois Alternative Assessment (IAA)
