Welcome to University of West Florida, the city of Pensacola and Escambia County Florida. I extend a hearty welcome to the players, officials, staff, and fans participating in the 2014 NIRSA National Championship Series, National Flag Football Championships.

UWF has a tradition of hosting flag football events for the past 35 years, and a big thanks to our staff who are dedicated to the support of enhancing student life by offering this great collegiate event.

Thank you also to NIRSA and our sponsors: The PSA, The Florida Sports Foundation, Champion Sportswear, and our contributing institutions: University of Florida, University of Southern Mississippi, Louisiana State University, Texas A&M University, Georgia Southern University, University of Central Florida, and Florida State University.

Enjoy the friendly competition and best of luck in pursuit of a memorable championship. During your visit please take the opportunity to explore our region and sample its hospitality and culture.

NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation and the NIRSA Championship Series Committee are excited to welcome you to Pensacola, Florida for the NIRSA National Flag Football Championships! The 2014 flag football season has been incredible, and we can’t wait to see the dedication and drive that got you here on display at this climactic event.

While you’re enjoying all the excitement and competition of the next few days, don’t forget to look around Pensacola and soak in the atmosphere. This is a unique opportunity to stand with your teammates, represent your home institution and the broader NIRSA community, and compete with fellow talented athletes from across the continent. You should know that you are surrounded by people who are committed to making this tournament the very best; this is an event borne out of a shared love of inclusive recreation, spirited competition, and fair play.

As 2014 comes to a close—and we celebrate another year spent promoting positive social change through the power of recreation—we look forward to an even better 2015! The work of dedicated committee members, and participants like you, will ensure this happens.

The Series’ National Flag Football Championships is not just a place for national competition, it’s also a platform for professional development, as up-and-coming professionals build skills and engage in hands-on learning. The passion of these officials and tournament staff drives the fantastic organization of our tournament, and makes the participants’ experience and opportunities for growth all the richer.

As this exciting and well-merited tournament unfolds, we look forward to your leadership in making everyone’s experience a positive one. PENSACOLA SPORTSASSOCIATION

On behalf of the board, staff, and members of the Pensacola Sports Association, as well as the entire tourism industry of Escambia County, it is my pleasure to welcome the players, families and friends to our wonderful community.

Pensacola is a community filled with many amenities for your enjoyment and I hope you will take the time to experience some of them while you are here. Amazing history as the first European settlement (1559, six years ahead of St. Augustine), world-class museums including the National Museum of Naval Aviation (the largest in the world), entertainment (downtown’s Palafox Street ranked one of Great Places in America’s Top Ten Streets), and of course the sugar white sand of Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key. Pensacola is also home to some of the top minds in the world as the home of the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition and other high tech firms in fields such as aeronautics and engineering who are building the businesses in our warm and supportive business climate.

As you plan for your future, we hope you will consider the Pensacola area for your vacations or as a place to ”put down roots”. In the words of the late Mayor Emeritus Vince Whibbs we are “the Western Gate to the Sunshine gate where thousands live the way millions wish they could…”

Thank you for coming. We welcome and encourage feedback from all the sponsors, participants, volunteers and staff in our on-going efforts to make this event the best it can be this year, and for the future.

Good luck and please remember sportsmanship matters!

NIRSA believes good sportsmanship is an integral component of intercollegiate competition. We wholeheartedly embrace the position that in order for sportsmanship to prevail, coaches, student-athletes, and fans must display respect, fairness, civility, honesty, and responsibility before, during and after all athletic contests. We encourage fans to enthusiastically support their team, recognize the outstanding performance of opponents, and always exhibit good sportsmanship in their words and actions.

NIRSA encourages and promotes sportsmanship by student-athletes, coaches, and spectators. Offensive language including profanity, racial or ethnic slurs or other intimidating actions directed at officials, event staff, student-athletes, coaches or team representatives will not be tolerated and are grounds for removal from sight of the competition.
