GENERAL SERVICES
MANDATE
To establish, extend and enhance the existing national geodetic reference system for all
surveying and mapping projects.
To delineate, demarcate, survey, maintain and administer all international and internal
boundaries of the country.
To prepare, produce and publish all geospatial products such as administrative maps,
electronic national atlas, gazetteer of geographical place names, road maps and other
thematic maps.
To provide national geospatial standard for the production of digital maps and other
geographical information (Survey Coordination).
To execute vital national survey (in consultation with relevant departments of the
government) of a time-lapse mapping of all areas of exploration and exploitation of solid
minerals, oil and gas, forestry, other national resources and ecologically impacted areas such
as desertification, gully erosion and land degradation.
Magnetic, gravity, ROW and other special surveys.
Monitoring of geo-hazard phenomenon
SERVICES & PRODUCTS
Offers the following services and products :
1. Delineation, demarcation, surveying and maintenance of all
International, Maritime and Interstate boundaries of the country.
2. Production of geospatial products like Topographic Maps,
Electronic National Atlas, Gazetteer of geographical place
names, Road maps and other Street Guide Maps.
3. Coordination of all the activities related to Surveying and
Mapping and to advise the Federal Government on these issues
for the development and security of the country.
INFOTERRA UK/EIT – ACQUISITION OF MULTISPECTRAL SATELLITE IMAGINARY MAP OF NIGERIA
On 8th November, 2012, a contract in the sum of N3,690,513,750.00 was
awarded to Infoterra UK/EIT. The objectives of the contract are as follows:
Procurement of a consolidated multi-user license for 25 Ministries,
Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to save cost from multiple acquisitions.
Production of ortho-photo and line maps of Nigeria at various scales.
A useful tool for the security agencies for defense mapping, strategic and
tactical operational activities to combat rising crime in Nigeria.
As at 9th July, 2014, the value of work completed/certified for payment is
N2,984,428,125.00 out of which N2,024,000,000.00 has been paid leaving a
balance of N960,428,125.00
From the above, 80.87% of the contract has been executed and certified for
payment while 54.84% of the contract value has been paid.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS
Some outstanding achievements during the period under review are as follows:
Establishment and maintenance of more Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) in various parts of the country;
Deployment of Zero order Controls which enables the mapping sector to tie Survey controls to other Nations through International terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF);
Acquisition of 2.5m resolution satellite imagery and 20m Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for the entire country. This has enabled the Office to produce 1:25,000 maps faster and more accurately;
OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS CONTD
Determination of transformation parameters from Nigerian Minna Datum to the Global using Nigerian experts;
Establishment of a Data Centre in the Office where all survey and mapping data/information are stored and made accessible to all stakeholders;
Publication of Second Edition National Atlas of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The first edition was published over thirty (30) years ago;
Updating of the Abuja Street Guide Booklet and Digital Street guide map of more than thirty (30) states has been completed.
FUTURE PLANIt is part of the Office future plan to:
Continue with 1:10,000, 1:25,000, 1:50,000 and 1:100,000 map coverage of the entire country;
Establish more COR Stations;
Establish a Survey Museum;
Produce school Atlas;
Intensify efforts in resolving boundary issues;
Complete the Data Centre and establish Remote Data Centre as Back-ups;
Sensitise the State Governments to map for development etc.
