THE DIVISION III EXPERIENCE
Meredith athletics teams participate in Division III of the National
Collegiate Athletic Association. Division III athletics offers student-
athletes the opportunity to become well-rounded individuals who
successfully integrate athletics and academics while experiencing
all aspects of college life. Student-athletes who compete at this level
can receive academic and need-based financial assistance. The
athletic department is staffed and funded like any other department in
the College.
ACADEMICS
Meredith College’s commitment to academics is exemplified by
its athletics teams. Each year, the USA South Athletic Conference
recognizes its student-athletes’ hard work in the classroom by naming
an Academic All-Conference team. In 2014, 60 Meredith students were
named to the team. The Meredith athletics program further recognizes
student-athletes who earn a 3.5 cumulative GPA as members of the
Athletics Director’s Club and those who earn a perfect 4.0 GPA with
the Vice-President’s Scholar-Athlete Award.
MEDICAL SERVICES
The athletic training staff provides excellent care for student-athletes.
The athletic training support staff consists of head athletic trainer,
Sharon Malley, and Assistant Athletic Trainer Heidi Roach. Dr. Doug
Martini of Cary Orthopedic serves as the program’s team physician. In
addition, Meredith College serves as a clinical site for the UNC-Chapel
Hill Undergraduate Athletic Training Program. Services and equipment
provided include a whirlpool, hydrocollator, ultrasound, injury ice and
electrical stimulation.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Members from each team are elected to the Student Athlete Advisory
Committee that organizes support for each sport and also coordinates
community service. Past volunteer work includes Special Olympics
of Wake County, Habitat for Humanity, Service Raleigh, and the USA
South Athletic Conference’s Cans Across the Conference and Pennies
for a Purpose.

COACHING STAFFFIONA BARKLEY
Fiona Barkley enters her eighth
season as head coach of the
Meredith College volleyball team
this fall. The 2013 squad posted an
overall record of 21-10 and ranked
second in the USA South - North
division regular season standings.
Under Barkley’s direction, the
Avenging Angels have earned 10
All-Conference player accolades,
including 2013 USA South Rookie
of the Year Karlie Long and 2008 USA South Libero of the Year Mary
Beth Finegan. Forty-three of Barkley’s players have earned USA
South All-Academic honors with their outstanding performance in the
classroom.
An assistant coach at N.C. State University from 2004-2005, Barkley
trained defensive systems while assisting with all aspects of the
Atlantic Coast Conference team. Prior to N.C. State, she served as
an assistant coach at Lynn University, a member of the Sunshine
State Conference, one of the most competitive conferences in all
of Division II.
Barkley began her collegiate coaching career as assistant coach
and recruiting coordinator at her alma mater, Elon University, and
completed her tenure at Elon in 2003 as interim head coach. During
her time with the Phoenix, she signed several recruits who went on to
earn All-Conference honors.
A four-year varsity letterwinner at Elon, Barkley helped lead the
Phoenix through its transition from Division II to Division I as a member
of the Big South Conference. Playing from 1995-98, she was named
captain during her senior year and capped off her career with Most
Valuable Player and All-Conference honors.
Barkley received numerous tournament awards throughout her career
at Elon and accumulated more than 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. In
November 1996, she was named the AVCA Division II National Player
of the Week and later helped lead her team to the 1996 South Atlantic
Conference championship. Barkley earned a Bachelor of Science in
Leisure/Sport Management from Elon University in 1999.
In addition to managing the Meredith volleyball program, Barkley
chairs the Annual Golf Classic and serves as the advisor for the
Avenging Angels Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
