COACHING STAFFMEREDITH VINCENT

Meredith Vincent joined the Meredith

Athletics program as Head Tennis

Coach in July 2013.

Vincent assumed her new role with

the Avenging Angels after completing

seven years with the Emory University

Eagles. She was named associate

coach of the Eagles women’s tennis

program in July 2011. Just one year

removed from her senior season

playing with the NCAA Division I Ohio

State Buckeyes, Vincent joined the Emory staff in the Fall of 2006.

In her seven seasons with the Eagles, Vincent helped the team to five

University Athletic Association Championships and six trips to the

NCAA Division III Tournament, including a second-place finish in 2010

and 2013, third-place finishes in 2009, 2011 and 2012, and a quarter-

final finish in 2008. In addition Emory claimed the 2010 and 2011 ITA

National Indoor Championships during her tenure with the program.

Vincent was recognized as the Atlantic South Region’s Assistant Coach

of the Year in both 2009 and 2010, and has been named part of the UAA

Coaching Staff of the Year on four occasions. During her seven years at

Emory, the Eagles compiled an overall record of 136-46, good for a 74.7

winning percentage. She helped coach Emory’s players to two National

Champions, 22 All-America honors and three UAA MVP awards.

Vincent also brings four years of Division I playing experience to Mer-

edith. In the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons, she played for Virginia

Tech before transferring to Ohio State to complete her final two years

of eligibility in 2005.

During her senior year with the Buckeyes, Vincent played mostly No. 3

and No. 4 singles, while leading the No. 1 doubles pair. Her expertise

in doubles play will be a focus with the Avenging Angels.

A native of Cincinnati, Vincent served as both the tennis pro and the

teaching professional at the Hyde Park Tennis Club in Cincinnati, in

addition to teaching at camps at College of Wooster, Denison Univer-

sity and Virginia Tech.

Vincent graduated from Ohio State University in 2005 with a bach-

elor’s degree in psychology. As her name might indicate, Vincent has

strong ties to Meredith and to Raleigh. Her mother, and several other

family members, graduated from Meredith and remain closely con-

nected to the campus and college community.

SARA HUFFMAN

A Meredith alumnae and adjunct faculty

member, Sarah Huffman, ’98, returned

to her alma mater once again as the

assistant tennis coach. Huffman played

tennis during her four years at Meredith

and served as the assistant coach nine

consecutive seasons after graduation.

Huffman earned the team’s top awards

while competing at Meredith and

served as team captain. She graduated

with honors with a Bachelor of Science

in Child Development, including minors in Exercise & Sports Science and

Physical Education.

Beginning in 1995 Huffman built a career in fitness, including an 18-year

tenure with the YMCA. She served as a group fitness instructor and

advanced as the director before changing professional directions.

Supervisor to over 80 instructors, Huffman’s team offered more than 150

unique fitness classes through the YMCA. The program provided a little

something for everyone regardless of fitness level or experience.

With a love for variety, Huffman currently teaches fitness classes at

several higher education institutions in Raleigh, including Meredith. She

owns multiple rental properties and coordinates children’s activities for

an area country club as well.

MEREDITH COLLEGE ATHLETICS PROGRAMTHE DIVISION III EXPERIENCE

Meredith athletics teams participate in Division III of the National Col-

legiate Athletic Association. Division III athletics offers student-athletes

the opportunity to become well-rounded individuals who successfully

integrate athletics and academics while experiencing all aspects of

college life. Student-athletes who compete at this level can receive aca-

demic and need-based financial assistance. The athletic department is

staffed and funded like any other department in the College.

ACADEMICS

Meredith College’s commitment to academics is exemplified by its

athletics teams. Each year, the USA South Athletic Conference recog-

nizes its student-athletes’ hard work in the classroom by naming an

Academic All-Conference team. In 2013, 54 Meredith students were

named to the team, eight of whom earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. The Mer-

edith athletics program further recognizes student-athletes who earn

a 3.5 cumulative GPA as members of the Athletics Director’s Club and

those who earn a perfect 4.0 GPA with the Vice-President’s Scholar-

Athlete Award.

MEDICAL SERVICES

The athletic training staff provides excellent care for student-athletes.

The athletic training support staff consists of head athletic trainer,

Sharon Malley, and Assistant Athletic Trainer Heidi Roach. Dr. Doug

Martini of Cary Orthopedic serves as the program’s team physician. In

addition, Meredith College serves as a clinical site for the UNC-Chapel

Hill Undergraduate Athletic Training Program. Services and equipment

provided include a whirlpool, hydrocollator, ultrasound, injury ice and

electrical stimulation.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Members from each team are elected to the Student Athlete Advisory

Committee that organizes support for each sport and also coordinates

community service. Past volunteer work includes Special Olympics

of Wake County, Habitat for Humanity, Service Raleigh, and the USA

South Athletic Conference’s Cans Across the Conference and Pennies

for a Purpose.

WEATHERSPOON GYMNASIUMThe home to Meredith’s basketball and volleyball teams. The facility

provides up-close seating for over 500 spectators. The complex also

includes locker rooms, athletics offices, a training room, a fitness

center, a 5,000 square-foot dance studio and a six-lane, indoor

swimming pool.

MEREDITH ATHLETIC FIELD AND TRACK COMPLEXThe home to Meredith’s soccer, cross country and lacrosse teams. The

complex includes a lighted competition level track, a FieldTurf artificial

playing surface capable of supporting soccer and lacrosse games and

a storage facility. Future phases of the project will include a grandstand,

hospitality areas, support facilities, restrooms, brick arcade and locker

rooms. The cross country team uses the complex as well as the

College’s 225-acre campus and the Reedy Creek Greenway.

MEREDITH SOFTBALL COMPLEXThe home of Meredith softball has recently undergone several reno-

vations. The addition of irrigation to the Bermuda field and infield

improvements have stepped up the playing conditions to make it

one of the best fields in the area. New dugouts have also been

completed to increase comfort for the players and enhance the

game atmosphere.

MEREDITH TENNIS COMPLEXThe home of the Meredith tennis program includes six lighted tennis

courts. The courts, which were recently repaired and resurfaced, bear a

“US Open Blue” inner court surrounded by a green outer court. This new

scheme helps to heighten the visibility of the ball for players and fans.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

Caroline Hunt and Puja Patel lead the Avenging Angels at No. 1 doubles.
