Doric. Built on powerful principles. The Doric column of classical architecture is a creative answer to a requirement for strength, integrity and visual appeal. It achieves durability in both form and function, yet it is relatively simple and economical to construct.

These are principles that we at Doric Group apply to every project we undertake. We encourage our engineering and construction teams to apply innovative and creative thinking, but we never lose sight of the purpose of our constructions or the need for economic accountability.

As a result, Doric has been delivering award-winning excellence to the commercial, infrastructure, resource and defence construction sectors for 25 years, and we congratulate all winners of the 2014 MBA Excellence in Construction Awards.

It is with great pleasure that we publish the Master Builders-Bankwest Excellence in Construction Awards Magazine.

This impressive publication showcases non-residential construction projects and all the entries in this year’s Master Builders-Bankwest Excellence in Construction Awards. The projects entered in this year’s awards have once again displayed first class workmanship and construction excellence; reflecting the high standards for which the Western Australian building industry has become renowned. The awards once again attracted great diversity among the entrants, ranging from office buildings and educational facilities to the Perth City Link Rail Alliance, across the entire state from Albany in the south to Wickham in the north. This year we received 77 entries totalling over $3.7 billion in contractual value. Each entry was impressive in its own right.

The award categories this year included:

• Best Historic Restoration or Renovation• Best Refurbishment or Renovation• Best Public Use Building• Best Office Building• Best Retail Building• Best Civil Engineering Works• Best Multi-Unit Development• Best Building Fit-out• Best State Government Building• Best Industrial Building• Best Education Building• Best Health Care Building• Best Aged Care Building• Best Regional Project• Best New Builder Award for builders who

have been registered for 5 years or less• Excellence in Energy Efficiency• Excellence in Waste Management• Subcontractor of the Year Awards• Architects Award

Our Best Regional Project was judged from the best 5 commercial projects from our Regional Building Excellence Awards in the North-West, Mid-West, South-West, Great Southern and Goldfields/Esperance regions.

Master Builders would like to thank our panel of judges for their commitment and dedication. The panel consisted of five experienced builders, an architect and an

engineer, all of whom contributed their valuable time and travelled great distances in some cases to judge this year’s diverse range of projects.

Master Builders congratulates all entrants, especially the winners, for the pride and professionalism displayed in their work. Your team of staff, specialist contractors and consultants deserve the highest accolades. The best of luck to those builders who will represent Western Australia in the Master Builders National Awards in Canberra in November 2014.

As always, we proudly acknowledge the support of all our corporate and public sector alliance partners, who have once again greatly assisted Master Builders in presenting our prestigious awards program. It is particularly pleasing to have the State’s leading bank in Bankwest as our principal partner again this year.

We hope you enjoy perusing this magazine as much as we did in compiling it for you with the assistance of our publishers, Crowther Blayne.

The Fiona Stanley Hospital has nine structures including administration, pathology, education, main hospital, state rehabilitation, mental health, and central energy plant buildings, and two four-level decked car parks within the precinct. Each building had its own individual design issues. The main construction activities centered on the main hospital building due to its physical size, and being on the construction programme’ s critical path. The structure of the main hospital is a complex design comprising a service tunnel, three podium levels, five ward levels, associated plant-rooms and a helicopter landing pad on level nine.

Brookfield Multiplex were responsible for the largest building infrastructure project ever undertaken by the State Government, the $2 billion Fiona Stanley Hospital. The building’ s foundations and basement retaining walls were constructed using 720 continuous flight auger piles with an in-situ pile cap at ground level to provide structural stability and mitigate any differential settlement. The building’s structure was further complicated by the requirement to withstand a 500 year seismic event. The seismic constraints were achieved by dividing the main hospital into sections and introducing floor, wall and ceiling movement joints throughout and performing the associated computer modeling.

This new local government building comprises a six level, 5 star Greenstar, 5 Star NABERS, A Grade office and cafe development, known as ONE70. In terms of energy efficiency, the first consideration for the design of the project was the site selection close to two major train and bus services, negating the need for numerous car parking spaces. The building was designed and positioned to maximise its northern orientation, eventuating in the creation of a ‘U’ shaped plan to allow maximum exposure to the north, while reducing exposure to the harsh sun from the east and west.

PACT Construction was awarded the building contract for the construction of the new local government house in West Leederville comprising a six level, A Grade office and cafe development, known as ONE70. The environmental focus was reflected throughout the entire building process achieving a 91% recycling rate or a diversion from landfill rate, which is well above the national commercial construction industry standard practice of 58%. The avoidance of waste generation was the primary objective by diverting waste from landfill, reducing waste and reusing spare and recycled materials. Recyclable material such as concrete, timber, metal, sand, clay and brick rubble were mixed and then sorted at the material recovery facility.

Utilising its outstanding fit-out capabilities, PACT Construction optimised aesthetics and balanced a neutral canvas with colourful feature paint and carpet, graphics and bright furniture. As the fit-out was an integrated one, work began early on the design so it could be incorporated into the works as the building progressed. Once this design integration took place, the work was incorporated into the program and the fit-out was delivered only three weeks after the completion of the base build.

PACT CONSTRUCTION

PROJECT 170 Railway ParadePHONE 9340 5900EMAIL [email protected]/ARCHITECT Hassell StudioENGINEER AECOM

PACT Construction was awarded the building contract for the construction of the new local government house in West Leederville comprising a six level, A Grade office and cafe development, known as ONE70. The environmental focus was reflected throughout the entire building process, achieving a 91% recycling rate or a diversion from landfill rate, which is well above the national commercial construction industry standard practice of 58%. The avoidance of waste generation was the primary objective by diverting waste from landfill, reducing waste and reusing spare and recycled materials. Recyclable material such as concrete, timber, metal, sand, clay and brick rubble were mixed and then sorted at the material recovery facility.

The design and construction of this hospital facility is entirely new, using the extensive expertise of Hassell and Brookfield Multiplex. During the planning phase, the potential areas where waste would be generated were identified which included: building material waste; black and grey water; office equipment (portable offices) and wastewater. Brookfield Multiplex applied the principles of waste management: avoid; reduce; reuse; recycle; recover, treat and dispose to minimise the impact of waste on the environment, and the public wherever practical. If unknown contaminants were identified they were classified using laboratory testing or other means.
