Building and construction is a barometer of our community’s prosperity and our vision for the fu-ture. Indeed, the built form is what makes each city distinguishable from the next. The recently completed Adelaide Oval redevelop-ment, the Convention Centre upgrade as well as the opening of the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute and the continuing

work at the new Royal Adelaide Hospital are all landmark projects that have helped transform our great State. Continuing improvements to our local in-frastructure through projects like the South Road Superway and Northern and Southern Expressways will bring about major benefits for commuters and busi-ness alike.

We have committed to continue strengthening our State’s finances and work-ing towards greater planning reforms to assist the residential and commercial building and construction industries. These reforms have unlocked the devel-opment potential for private investors in the city and together with increased application approvals, reduced assessment timeframes and working more closely with local industry, we are excited about the future.

SA Structural Pty Ltd

The majority of the frames were unique in size, shape, position and location. The tight

tolerances specified required the engagement of full time surveyors using 3D technology

throughout the processing, fit-up, welding and re-assembly process to ensure adjacent

panels would match-fit without expensive trail assembly of all frames. These unique model

coordinates were also transposed by 3D survey onsite to verify that the erections tolerances

were within the specified allowable deviations.

SA Structural took a leading role in the implementation of the rigging techniques to facilitate

the erection of the diagrid panels. Creative thinking and innovation was required to find

the most efficient and unique rigging techniques to install the diagrid panels to the various

elevations of the SAHMRI façade, namely the East and West Atriums, underbelly and

noses. Safety in design and pre-planning involving well thought out temporary engineering

solutions was an integral part in mitigating risk in the procurement and erection process for

all the pre-glazed diagrid panels.

Fabrication was undertaken in SA Structural’s facilities, with Strucad 3D software used for

all pre-fabrication modelling. SA Structural’s ability to work collaboratively with Hindmarsh,

Yuanda and the project team to deliver this truly unique structure was paramount for its

successful delivery.

In this showroom, Kennett were able to achieve the client’s requirements for an excep-tional level of craftsmanship and construction excellence. They had to respond to a num-ber of latent conditions, including the discovery of uncontrolled fill and contamination, but were still able to maintain the construction time frame. This project demonstrates a commitment to detail and finishes, and a high level of awareness of the client’s needs.

Isis Group Australia Pty LtdPROJECT Subway and Amenities Pod, Adelaide Airport Plaza

The elliptical nature of these buildings, the high-end external finishes, minimal set out tolerances and a construction period of just ten weeks all contributed to the challenges of this project. The resolution of the curvature of the panels was particularly well ex-ecuted and it was apparent to the judges that the relationship between the Isis Group, the client, architect and subcontractors created an effective and coordinated team.

Partek Construction & InteriorsPROJECT BAE Systems JSF Advanced Manufacturing Facility, Edinburgh Parks

The striking quad coloured custom orb cladding with its raking angles and distinct steps give this a presence to be noticed. One of the key challenges of this project involved the single concrete pour of a mounting pad 18 metres by 12 metres and 2 metres deep with very specific performance requirements. This highly engineered building had small toler-ances, required a controlled environment, and very tight performance parameters. Partek responded well to these challenges and delivered a building of the highest quality.


Romaldi Constructions Pty LtdPROJECT Marrayatville Learning Centre, Marryatville

The overall impact of these new General Learning Areas and Science Laboratories is visually dynamic. This project has extensive amounts of joinery, multiple different fin-ishes, complex detailing throughout, and was executed to a very high standard. One initiative with a particularly successful outcome, was the collaboration of Romaldi with the architect and subcontractor in redesigning the signature ‘porthole’ windows within the blade walls. Overall the builder has delivered an outstanding project.

Kennett’s displayed considerable skill and quality control in the implementation of a di-verse range of demanding products and finishes, with particular emphasis on the entry and foyer. Kennett’s used their skills to positively contribute to construction innovation, particularly in regard to steel work as well as precast and glazing system’s. The new works were attached to the existing operating offices, therefore placing the construc-tion site under considerable pressure in terms of noise, dust and safe public access. The project was completed on budget and exceeded the prescribed time frame resulting a in a very satisfied client.

Hansen Yuncken Pty LtdPROJECT 80 Grenfell Street, Adelaide

A challenging inner city site and a sophisticated high rise office tower set the framework for many complexities that required all exceptional skills from Hansen Yuncken. Well-developed time and cost management systems resulted in the completion of the tower on time, despite the project being up scaled in terms of specified finishes. The project was geared toward a non-adversarial approach, which aligned designers, the builder, trades and the client in a common objective. The result is obvious, with the finishes on this building being exceptional.


Mossop Construction+InteriorsPROJECT Riverland General Hospital, Berri

The quality of finishes of this project were consistently high with the additional chal-lenge of any defects being successively rectified, as each of the multiple stages of the hospital were handed over to the client. Mossop utilised local subcontractors wherever possible and ensured that the distance of Berri from their offices in Adelaide did not prejudice their attention to detail and their attendance on site. Their programming was finely tuned and managed, resulting in budget savings to such an extent that funds were returned to the hospital for subsequent additional works. This project represents the exceptional delivery of a country project.

Hindmarsh Construction Australia Pty LtdPROJECT Learning Centre Project, City West Campus, The Jeffrey Smart Building,Adelaide

This building called for a diverse range of exacting finishes, resulting in some very com-plex intersections that could only be achieved through exceptional attention to detail. The use of BIM assisted in resolving the fabrication of some complex shapes particularly in the precast and façade glazing, and despite having to contend with early delays as a result of archaeological artefact discoveries, various innovative contributions by Hind-marsh brought the project back on schedule. Throughout the build the builder enjoyed an excellent client relationship allowing the building to be completed under budget.

Hindmarsh Construction Australia Pty LtdPROJECT SAHMRI, North Terrace, Adelaide

In many aspects of modern building construction the SAHMRI Building presented Hind-marsh with the ultimate challenge. It was a building of great complexity, resolved to a large extent with the use of BIM and fully integrated solutions across all building ser-vices. It involved a self-supporting façade system that was extremely complex in regard to tolerances. If the facade itself did not represent a sufficient challenge, the internal spaces were just as demanding and exacting in their requirements, including fine de-tailing and a perfect finish. Whilst this is an award of excellence for building construc-tion, Hindmarsh can be proud of being a positive contributor to an extremely successful iconic building.

The subtle choice of materials and their interaction were extremely demanding, involving hand crafting of the many elements and top end joinery throughout. The QA and safety re-quirements demanded of this project were of the highest standard experienced by the judges. The Web based BIM 360 field defect management system resulted in a con-sistent and prompt recording, locating and rectification process. The collaborative ap-proach also observed in the base building, extended to the fitout resulting in a beauti-fully executed product and a very satisfied client.

Trewstone ContractorsPROJECT Lyell McEwin Hospital Redevelopment Stage C, Elizabeth Vale

The judges were impressed with Trewstone Contractors in relation to exacting stand-ards, cleanliness and quality of the brickword. It was evident that the bricks were hand-picked and considering that the height of some of the brickwork was in the vicinity of 6-storeys, the contractors and their tradems did an excellent job.

Hindmarsh Plumbing Services Pty LtdPROJECT Adelaide Oval Redevelopment

The judges were impressed with this project’s ability in relation to the size, scope and difficulty in providing services to cope with 50,000 plus patrons, in a faultless manner. Locating plumbing using the latest technology was also impressive in addition to the use of recycled water in water closets, the saving and storage of rainwater for reuse in landscaping and the use, if required, of water from the River Torrens. The judges ac-knowledge that this project is a worthy recipient of a building excellence award.

WinnerEXCELLENCE IN CONCRETE AND CONCRETE FINISHING

Bianco Walling Pty LtdPROJECT Glenunga International High School

This category presented the judges with some difficulties due to the high quality of pro-jects entered. Within this project the precast structures were huge in size, requiring spe-cially made moulds to make and transport them. The shape of the structures presented challenges in the pouring process, while specially made connections were made to enable them to be placed without having any visible bolt holes in the outer surface. The evenness of the colouring of the concrete was impressive, resulting in an excellent finish.
