LIGHTHOUSE BEACH RESORTThe Lighthouse Beach Resort Hotel has for many decades been an icon landmark on the coastal skyline of Bunbury, which generations of residents and visitors have enjoyed.Phase one of the project involved a comprehensive refurbishment of the entire residential south east wing of the hotel, comprising 33 rooms in a three storey block. Phase two was added shortly after commencement of phase one and involved the complete internal rebuild of the hotel’s function centre, it was negotiated and included as a variation to the original contract.

TRAFALGARS HOTELThe original Hotel was built in 1856 as a modest two-storey building, but before the end of the century a larger one had been built alongside. These two buildings became what is know today as Trafalgars Hotel and although the hotel has undergone many alterations over the years it has long been associated with Bunbury’s History over the past 157 years. Perkins Builder’s brief required to undertake a complete renovation and restoration of the existing building whilst preserving the heritage values.

Surfers Point and the closely located park area of Rifl ebutts are the focal point of both local and international surfi ng competitions and a major tourist attraction. This area has been the subject of the Shire of Augusta Margaret River major upgrade since 2012, with the Surfer’s Point inclusion in the ASP World Tour.

Smith Constructions GROUP TRAINING

Group Training Head Offi ce is a 500m2, two storied offi ce building built on the fringes of Bunbury’s CBD. This two-storey building was constructed using concrete tilt panels, insitu concrete suspended fl oors and timber truss framed roof. It comprises of Offi ces, open plan work areas, Boardroom and Function area. The use of tilt panel construction allowed this element to perform the vertical structural support, the external wall and fi re ratings.

The brief for this project stated that this new building should refl ect the style of the existing heritage buildings in the Manjimup Timber Park. The cladding material and paint colour were chosen to adhere to this request.The layout of the building was dictated by the needs of the Historical Society in that they required a 2 hour fi re proof archive room, a dedicated library, meeting room and offi ce plus a kitchen for the use of its members. The exterior of the kitchen are an ambulant bathroom and a disability compliant bathroom, which were required to be accessible by the general public.

The standard of entries was once again extraordinary, which demonstrates the continued pride and dedication to quality work that Master Builder members through all trades, residential and commercial construction have to their work.

Recently I was fortunate enough to attend the Master Builders Bankwest Housing Excellence Awards in Perth which featured metropolitan homes along with the best of residential construction from each of our representative regions; these include the Kimberley & Pilbara, Goldfi elds & Esperance, and Great Southern & Southwest. The overall winners from each of these regions completed for the title of Country Homes of the Year. This year the South West was represented by Wholagan Building Inspirations for a magnifi cent home built to perfection in Flinders Bay taking out the top honours. During the last 7 years 7 South West projects have taken home this prestigious award, confi rmation that quality trades working together are constructing some of the best projects in the state right here in the South West.

With another year of judging now behind us, the South West regions best residential and commercial projects for 2014 have been determined. It has again been a very diffi cult challenge for our judging panel with margins between winning and fi nalist projects being very close within a number of categories. The culmination of this process resulted in a magnifi cent

awards presentation the Master Builders Bankwest Building Excellence Awards held at the Grand Ballroom of the Lighthouse Beach Resort in Bunbury. The resultant winners are displayed proudly throughout this impressive feature.
