Science Overview:

The LWS program, by definition, is cross-disciplinary, and brings together the science teams

from the different LWS missions and other heliophysics missions, as well as the LWS Targeted

Research and Technology (TR&T) teams to connect the different disciplines. The LWS research forms

a network that connects many areas of solar physics, Earth’s and other planets’ magnetospheric and

atmospheric physics, Sun-climate relationships, and radiation safety for human exploration.

Combining these cross-disciplinary research teams enables new understanding of the Sun and its

influence on our space environment at Earth.

The NASA Heliophysics System Observatory (HSO) has recently grown and will continue to

develop, thus providing a more complete picture of the interactions of various environments that are

subject to the Sun’s influence. The newest missions include the Interface Region Imaging

Spectrograph (IRIS) and the Van Allen Probes, the 2nd

mission in the LWS program. The other LWS

mission currently in orbit is the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Data from current and past

missions, such as the Hinode, RHESSI, STEREO, SOHO, ACE, THEMIS/ARTEMIS, TIMED,

among many others, and future missions (BARREL, MMS, SPP, and Solar Orbiter), will be combined

to pursue cross-disciplinary science goals that are broader and more complex than any single mission

could address alone. These observations are supported by complementary theoretical and modeling

studies that help maximize the science return from the LWS program.

The session themes for this meeting focus on coupling throughout the heliosphere and are

science topics common to many disciplines:

1a. Magnetic Energy and Field from Solar Interior to Corona and Heliosphere

1b. Reconnection and Magnetic Instabilities in Geospace, Heliosphere, and the Solar Atmosphere

2a. Evolving Coronal Mass Ejections from Corona, through the Heliosphere, into Geospace

2b. Dynamics of Energetic Particles, Wave-Particle Interactions, Shocks, and Turbulence

3a. Ion-Neutral Interactions within Earth’s Atmosphere and the Solar Atmosphere

3b. Heliosphere-Magnetosphere Interactions from Bowshock to Geotail

4a. Origins of Solar Magnetic Fields, Variability, and Effects at Earth

4b. Modeling and Forecasting Space Climate and Space Weather Events

Financial Support:

The meeting organizers would like to sincerely thank the organizations that provided financial

support for students, post-docs, and early career scientists.

Thomas Metcalf Travel Fund

Early career scientist support has been made possible by the Thomas

Metcalf Travel Fund of the Solar Physics Division of the American

Astronomical Society. Congratulations Adam Kobelski of the National

Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia, for being

awarded the LWS 2014 Metcalf Fellowship.

Transportation in Portland:

We are going green! As part of your registration, we are providing attendees with a Portland TriMet public

transportation pass (excellent light rail and bus system!). There is a TriMet system map on the

last page of this LWS Meeting program.

Getting to/from the DoubleTree Hotel from the Portland Intl. Airport:

Since you won’t have your transportation pass yet, the easiest way to get to the DoubleTree

Hotel is to take the MAX light rail. At the airport, go to the lower level, next to the south

baggage claim area, and follow the signs to the MAX light rail Red Line. MAX light rail hours

are 5 a.m.-11:56 p.m., with trains running every 15 minutes. The trip between the airport and

downtown takes about 40 minutes and requires an all-zone fare. The one-way cost is only $2.50

(per person for a 2-hour ticket). For the DoubleTree Hotel, you want to get off at the Lloyd

Center Mall stop. You can easily roll your luggage onboard for convenient and inexpensive

travel. For a complete schedule, visit: http://trimet.org/schedules/maxredline.htm.

Lunch Ideas:

Portland is well-known for their great food and restaurant scene! Have fun!

Lunch options near the DoubleTree within walking distance will be centered around the Lloyd

Center Mall just across the street, or on NE Broadway and NE 15th

Ave. The Lloyd Center Mall

has plenty of fast food options. For those looking to stretch their legs, walking to NE Broadway

and NE 15th

Avenue will offer additional options. For a quick map: Here is a link.

Some nearby favorites:

Pastini Pastaria – This is a local chain that has great pasta dishes and a menu that is able to please

everyone. From the hotel it would be under a 15 minute walk to get to the restaurant.

Stanford’s – This is a local chain, but it happens to be right across the street from the hotel

making for a short walk. They have an extensive menu with a wide range of prices to help

accommodate everyone.

Newport Seafood Grill – This is another local chain that is within walking distance to the hotel –

under 15 minutes. With seafood as their primary item, they also offer burgers and chicken

sandwiches on the menu.

McMenamin’s on Broadway – The McMenamin brothers have opened up a large amount of

brew pubs around Portland. They serve up their own beer, wine and spirits along with a menu

that features sandwiches, burgers and pizzas.

On Tuesdays, there is Portland’s renowned Farmers Market that takes place from 10 am – 2 pm

with lunch options. This is located kitty-corner from the Doubletree Hotel. If the weather is nice,

the farmers market is always a lot of fun!

Another option is to hop on the MAX light rail and head into downtown Portland where a large pod

of food carts may be found on 10th

and Alder. Here is a link to give you an idea of travel time and

location. Sit down restaurants are available as well off the MAX light rail line. Travel Portland has

compiled a nice list to help you make a quick trip to downtown for lunch from the Lloyd

Center/Oregon Convention Center. It follows this page and is online here: Travel Portland’s list.
