F ITCHBURG publ i c L ibraryOpened in 2011, the library has become a huge resource to everyone in the area. Books, movies, music and audio books are available for check out. The adults, teens and kids programming is superb and offers something for everyone. Teens have their own space in the library with books, gaming systems and computers. The Children’s Library features a storytime room, a play and learn area pro-vided by the Friends of the Fitchburg Library and computers that promote early literacy skills. Adults can utilize the Technology Lab with 18 computers available for free in both PC and Mac systems. Group study rooms and private study areas are available as well as a quiet reading room with cozy fireplace.

The library also hosts events for children like the Great Halloween Hunt, kids movies and an art program for toddlers. Three meeting rooms are for rent for community groups and businesses (more information can be found on page 22/23). The library is a fun and functional place for the whole family!

Fitchburg’s summer concert series is one of Fitchburg’s premier community events! The kids can play at the Splash Pad and the Dream Park, or they can dance and sing along with the bands. Bring a blanket, picnic and a bottle of wine or bring a little cash and enjoy local beers and a variety of tasty foods from local vendors. McKee Park is the perfect location to park your car, hop on your bike for a long (or short) ride. Finish your ride with music, local brews and friends. What a great Monday night!

STATE TRAILSBADGER STATE TRAIL*The Badger State Trail is a 40-mile trail extending from Fitchburg to the Illinois state line. This ride takes you through several beautiful Wisconsin communities with scen-ery of bluffs, old train depots and miles of wildflowers. Find more info at the Wisconsin DNR’s website at dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/name/badger.

CAPITAL CITY STATE TRAIL*As Fitchburg’s neighbor, Madison is just a trail away. The Capital City Trail is a paved trail and tours suburban and rural Fitchburg as well as Madison. It links to urban Madison and takes you around Lake Monona’s loop and beyond. More information can be found at the Wisconsin DNR website at dnr.wi.gov/org/topic/parks/name/capcity.

MILITARY RIDGE STATE TRAIL*The Military Ridge Trail is 40 miles of fairly flat gravel. It follows abandoned rail cor-ridors from Fitchburg through Verona, Blue Mounds , Riley and ends in Dodgeville. A daily or season state pass is required. For more information, contact the Military Ridge Trail at (608) 437-7393 or by visiting dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/name/militaryridge.

STATE TRAIL PASSES*State Trail Passes are required for people ages 16 and older if biking, in-line skating, horseback riding or cross-country skiing on these trails. Passes are not required for pe-destrians. DNR service centers sell stickers and trail passes as well as Fitchburg City Hall. FITCHBURG PATHS (no trail passes required)CANNONBALL PATHThe Cannonball Path is shared-use path that runs from the Beltline Highway to the connection of the Capital City State Trail, Badger State Trail, Military Ridge Path and Southwest Path. The section of path from the Military Ridge Path to east of Seminole Highway is currently packed gravel and will be paved in 2014. A bridge over the Beltline Highway was completed in 2013. This is a joint effort between the cities of Fitchburg and Madison. Unlike state trails, Fitchburg paths are free to use with no trail passes required.

MILITARY RIDGE PATHThis path is an extension of the Military Ridge State Trail that connects to the Badger State Trail , Capital City State Trail, Cannonball Path and Southwest Path near Fitchburg’s Arrowhead Park. This section of path is currently packed gravel and will be paved in 2014. A bridge will be con-structed over McKee Road to provide a convenient and safe crossing of this four lane divided roadway, and is expected to be completed in May 2014. QUARRY RIDGE MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL &FREE RIDE AREAQuarry Ridge features trails for beginners to experts, including a single track loop with technical sections. The elevated trails and free ride structures make this an exciting, free adventure for any adrenaline junkie! Fitchburg’s Quarry Ridge Trail is located at 2740 Fitchrona Road (go west on Nesbitt Rd., turn left on Fitchrona Rd.). This area is managed by Fitchburg’s Parks Department with help from the Capital Off Road Pathfinders (madcitydirt.com).

BICYCLE FRIENDLY COMMUNITYIn 2012, Fitchburg was honored with winning a national award by the League of American Bicyclists designating Fitchburg as a bicycle friendly communi-ty. It’s evident when you ride here that Fitchburg has made a significant effort and investment to create

an outstanding biking community.

IRONMAN WISCONSINThis international event takes place in September and starts with a 2.4 mile swim in Lake Monona followed by a 112 mile bike ride winding through Fitchburg and Verona and parts south before heading back to Madison. The day is capped off with a 26.2 mile marathon which loops through downtown Madison twice. 1,800 athletes from 25 countries participate. Full coverage can be found at ironmanwisconsin.com.

Jenni & Kyle Preserve925 Post Road, MadisonThe vision for the Jenni and Kyle Preserve began in 1989 with a donation from Harvey and Patricia Wilmeth, given as a memorial to their two grandchildren, Jenni and Kyle, who both died at the age of four due to a degen-erative neurological disorder. The Jenni and Kyle Preserve is unique in that the park is intended to serve children and persons with disabilities, and provides accessible fishing and picnic areas, trails, wheelchair swings, and a shelter building around two spring-fed ponds containing trout and panfish.

S p l a s h Pa d Fitchburg Splash Pad, Open Memorial Day thru Labor Day! This exciting family-focused park is free of charge thanks to a large amount of fundraising done by the Fitchburg Optimist Club.

What is a splash pad? First and foremost, a Splash Pad is fun! Water is sprayed, rained, poured and dumped from play features. The Pad has zero depth, so there’s no standing water to worry parents with smaller children. This wet and wonderful playground is fully-accessible and safe for all ages and abilities.

There are three zones: Toddler—with soft mists and gentle streams; Pre-teens—with high-energy, team-building activities; and Families—with dumping buckets, water tun-nels and lots of good, clean fun.

In keeping with Fitchburg’s green spirit, this is a recirculation splash pad. It recycles the water to conserve water resources and make it more energy efficient.

The Fitchburg Splash Pad is located in McKee Farms Park at 2930 Chapel Valley Road.

The annual Agora Art Fair is a feast for your senses. Beautiful artwork from local art-ists including paintings, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, fiber art, photography and more are artfully displayed on the grounds of the stunning Agora. And if that’s not enough, you can also relax and enjoy live music by local musicians as they perform in the courtyards surrounded by prairies.

Over 100 artists showcase their works in a wide variety of mediums at this event that draws over 15,000 people each year. Fea-tured artists include Steven Kozar, Solvici Glass and Herb Johnson.

The event also features the enticing Beer Garden and a selection of local food vendors. The lush tall grass prairies are the ideal set-ting for a picnic.

Don’t hesitate to bring the kids along! The Chil-dren’s Art Yard is well-equipped to keep little hands busy with a number of art projects.
