Message from LeadershipDear Friend, We are so pleased to share UC Health Foundation’s inaugural Annual Report with you. In just a few years the UC Health Foundation has taken great strides towards building relationships to create a culture of philanthropy that supports the advanced specialty care taking place across UC Health and the academic health center.

Our inaugural accomplishments, which included renovating the infusion rooms at UC Medical Center’s Barrett Center, bringing key technology to Daniel Drake Center for Post-Acute Care, expanding the support and programming provided to parents of premature infants, providing a nurse navigator at our Women’s Center, and so much more—would not have been possible without you – our donors.

In challenging and changing economic conditions, you know that the health system needs support to provide all of the services and technology for our patients and their families. You know the value of innovation and research. You know the value of the charitable care we provide to our community. You know the value of having the area’s preeminent specialists right here in our community. You know the value of giving, and you chose to give.

Annual Report UC Health Foundation

As the fundraising entity for UC Health, UC Health Foundation raises

philanthropic funds to support the heart of UC Health’s mission –

patient care, research, and education.

In September 2010, UC Health was launched to the public as a collaboration between

UC Physicians, University of Cincinnati Medical Center, the University of Cincinnati College

of Medicine, and West Chester Hospital. As the area’s only academic health center,

UC Health is uniquely positioned to offer advanced specialty care delivered by the area’s

leading clinicians bolstered by cutting edge research taking place every day that benefits

our patients.

Established in 2012, the UC Health Foundation will harness the individual and collective

gratitude of patients and families whose lives were saved, changed, and improved as a

result of the care and kindness received from our doctors, nurses, and staff.

Rooms that Rock 4 Chemo

Choosing to Give…Rooms that Rock 4 ChemoIn April 2014, the lobbies and infusion suites in UC Medical Center’s Barrett Center were stripped down, overhauled,

and transformed. Led by the UC Health Foundation and harnessing the time, talent, and generosity of the community,

we partnered with the national organization Rooms That Rock 4 Chemo to transform the drab and sterile chemotherapy

infusion rooms and radiation treatment area at the Barrett Center to warm, comfortable rooms to conjure peace and

healing. Thanks to the collective power of the community and generous donors like you, UC Health Foundation rocked

the Barrett Center.

This project is just one example of the power of philanthropy at UC Health and the role it plays helping the academic

health center be the premier provider of advanced specialty care.

Rooms that Rock 4 Chemo by the Numbers

Lori Kolthoff’s husband, Mike, lost his life too soon to esophageal cancer. To honor his memory, Lori inspired family and friends to give to Rooms that Rock 4 Chemo. The Friends of Mike Kolthoff worked to garner contributions from people and local businesses who knew and loved Mike Kolthoff, and even from strangers who never met him but were moved by their efforts. Together, their commitment to leave a lasting legacy to honor Mike surpassed their expectations – they raised $50,000 in Mike’s honor.

Behind their $50,000 gift were hundreds of smaller donations – donations from people like you who know that each and every gift has the collective effect of improving the care delivered to thousands of people each and every day at UC Health. The generosity and support of the Friends of Mike Kolthoff makes our work possible.

The Gift of LegsThanks to the generosity of a donor, patients at Daniel

Drake Center for Post-Acute Care receive an experience

many of them thought might no longer be possible –

the gift to stand upright; to look their family and peers

in the eye; a gift to restore dignity that can slip away for

many who spend their time in a wheelchair. The Ekso

Bionic Exoskeleton supports an individual’s weight so

they can stand again. The futuristic technology of the

system offers therapeutic benefits to patients, as well as

restoring confidence and pride. Thanks to a generous

donor, UC Health became one of just a handful of health

systems to own the Ekso system.

Nearly 90% of giving to healthcare organizations comes

from patients and their families. UC Health Foundation is

no different. Most of our contributions come from grateful

patients and their families who give to honor their

caregiver, to show their gratitude, to memorialize the lives

of loved ones, to promote awareness, to give hope, to bring

closure, and for so many other reasons. Regardless of your

motivation, we thank you for choosing to give.

Raising Spirits for the CureHank Roy noticed a bump on his tongue that should have

been removed immediately. Other doctors, not up to date

on the latest research, followed an ineffective treatment

plan. By the time Hank made his way to the specialists at

UC Health, the bump on his tongue was aggressive cancer.

For a year, Hank’s medical team fought to save his life.

Hank fought too, and lived his life to the fullest despite

losing his ability to talk, eat, and swallow. Hank’s friends and

family came together to create a memorable evening to

honor Hank, promote awareness of head and neck cancer,

and raise funds to support research.

Elaine’s day had started out like most others. She was accustomed to the normal pangs and twinges of being pregnant with twins. But soon things changed. She thought she was having Braxton Hicks contractions, but conversations with her doctors and tests soon showed she was in early labor. At only 26 weeks along, the first-time mom was already nervous about having twins – let alone premature twins. Unable to stop her labor, her doctors transferred her to the care of UC Health’s maternal and fetal medicine team.

Elaine recalls entering a room where everyone looked worried – except for Dr. Ronald Jaekle. Dr. Jaekle was confident that he would be able to stop Elaine’s labor to give her babies much needed time to continue to grow, develop, and gain strength. “Dr. Jaekle was just what I needed,” explains Elaine. “He was confident and assured us that everything would be ok.”

Elaine spent three weeks being cared for by Dr. Jaekle and UC Health’s maternal fetal medicine team. For three weeks Elaine’s caregivers were able to hold off her labor – a critical time for her babies’ growth and chances for survival at UC Medical Center. Elaine’s sons, Alex and Will, were delivered at 29 weeks. The boys faced an uphill battle. They spent 10 weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at UC Medical Center, where they learned to eat, sleep, and breathe on their own. Their journey was filled with ups and downs. The NICU staff educated and provided emotional support to Elaine and her husband, Joe. “The NICU staff took care of me, just as much as they took care of my boys. When I thought I was at my breaking point, they stepped in and helped me keep my strength and find new perspective.”

Today, Elaine is still overcome with gratitude for the UC Health physicians and staff who took care of her and her babies. “They saved my boys’ lives. I know without them they would not be here today.” Her appreciation to UC Health motivates Elaine to give back. She is active with the Friends of Tiny Hearts, a group that supports NICU families with education, fellowship events, and fundraising. “I’m so excited to be part of Friends of Tiny Hearts to help raise money and awareness for the NICU,” said Elaine. “My husband and I have long talked about how we could help the NICU after all they did for us. I want to help other moms and dads during their NICU experience, and after they get to take their precious preemie babies home.”

Serving as a volunteer at UC Health’s West Chester Hospital since 2008, Lynn Nelson was motivated by her own experience as a patient. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, at one time Lynn needed a wheel chair to help her navigate the world. “I vowed that if I ever got back on my feet, I would give back.” And she has. Lynn has served as a volunteer for West Chester Hospital for more than five years - working at the front desk, within the surgery department, and most recently visiting with patients as a hospital chaplain.

Lynn knows the importance of giving more than her time. She supports West Chester by making charitable contributions, and hopes that others will do the same. As Lynn says, “This hospital is such an asset to the community. It takes care of us. We need people to give back. It doesn’t matter how much. Everything helps.”

Spring Fling at West Chester Hospital

West Chester Hospital’s Annual Spring Fundraiser had its

most successful year ever in 2014. This year’s theme was

Surfin’ Safari, and guests danced to live music, enjoyed

boardwalk games, dined at food stations, and bid on raffle

items all in the spirit of having fun and supporting

UC Health’s West Chester Hospital. The funds from the

event will support the robotic surgery department as well

as a scholarship fund for local students pursuing careers in

health care. Due to the great support from the community,

the event raised 20% more than the previous year.

Support from our generous donors means that people and families from across the community are connected to the most

advanced specialty care in our region. An investment in UC Health is an investment in the health and well-being of our

entire community. Like all other not-for-profit health systems, UC Health is proud to treat the most complex medical issues,

the most serious traumas, and the tiniest of babies - regardless of an individual’s ability to pay. Giving to UC Health supports

charitable care to our community.

Joey Votto Foundation Helps Establish UC Stress Center

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can strike people

at any age and at any time, in response to a traumatic or

stressful event. Thanks to a leadership gift of $426,000

from the Joey Votto Foundation and gifts from others

in the community, the UC Health Stress Center will now

be there for individuals, couples, and families struggling

with PTSD. The center will be led by Kathleen Chard, PhD.

“We would like to thank the Joey Votto Foundation and

their teammates for their assistance in creating the

center,” says Chard, who is also director of trauma

recovery at the Cincinnati Department of Veterans Affairs

Medical Center. “We will be pleased to provide gold-standard, individual, couples and family therapy to those

suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.”

The goal for the center is to provide care for approximately 500 new patients and over 4,000 visits or therapy sessions

annually.
