Jim Derichs was barely out of high school when he took the phrase serviceto your neighbor to heart. Derichs, after graduating from Belgrade High School in 1979, became amember of the Elrosa Fire Department in January 1980. He is also one of 18 firstresponders on the department that has 23 total members. In 1984, he was elected treasurer of the department and has held thatposition ever since. Theyve asked me to keep doing it every two years. I dont mind it. I mustbe doing it right, he said while hovering over paperwork on a random Mondaynight in September. Derichs father, Harold, who passed away in 1987, was also a member of thedepartment, although they didnt serve at the same time. Its natural for us to want to follow in our fathers footsteps. Theres so
much pride to be on the department. As a volunteer, you dont do it for money. Fire department members receive a small payment towards a retirementaccount. While some area small town departments are able to give smallamounts of regular compensation for fire calls, Elrosa is too small to support that. We serve on the department because our neighbors need it. Its just whatwe do, he said. Derichs has seen changes through the years as a member of thedepartment. Shortly after he joined, a new fire hall was built along Highway 71 inthe early 1980s and then expanded in 2003. The western-most stall to the fire hallwas the original fire hall built in the 1950s after the department was founded in1954. Derichs has served under four fire chiefs: Lee Breitbach (1979 to 1985),John Olmscheid (1985 to 2003), Tim Heinze (2003 to 2007) and Gary Deters (2007to present). Other big changes Derichs has seen in his time as a fireman revolvearound training requirements, the cost of equipment and different forms ofcommunication. While walking through the fire halls truck hangar, fire suits hanging inlockers cover nearly the entire length of the west wall. An entire modern fire suitcosts $4,000 according to Derichs. While new fire trucks cost over $300,000, Derichs said that Elrosa has beenfortunate to have always found quality used trucks that cost less than half thatamount. Our water pumper is from St. Joseph. We got a good deal on it, and it onlyhas about 18,000 miles. Its a 1990s model, but to us its new, he said. We dont need new equipment. We just need trucks that are reliable. Prior to Derichs time on the department, a makeshift alert system was setup for the original department members, where someone would call the barsor the elevator to report a fire. At those locations, a worker would push a buttonand sound the siren. Three blasts would signal a country fire, and six would signala city fire. In the 1960s, CB (Citizens Band) radio was used by all department membersin their personal vehicles.
Finally in 1987, modern two-way radios were purchased by the departmentthat not only allowed for efficient communication in Elrosa but also with nearbytowns. During Olmscheids time as fire chief, the 9-1-1 service was introduced torural areas, and all department members got pagers in the early 1990s. It was anexpensive change but one Elrosa was able to handle.Today modern 800-mHZradios are used by all departments in Stearns County. Derichs figured in recent years the Elrosa Fire Department has gottenaround 20 calls a year between the cities of Elrosa and Spring Hill, which is inthe Elrosa fire department coverage area. The department also covers all of LakeGeorge township plus portions of Getty, Spring Hill and North Fork townships. We get good support from the townships. They understand whatsneeded to keep the department running smoothly, said Derichs.

HONOR OUR FALLENThe Minnesota Fire Service honors its Fallen Firefighters the last Sundayin September each year at the Fallen Firefighter Memorial on the State
Capital Grounds. Since 1881, 211 Minnesota firefighters have died in theline of duty. Their names have been inscribed on columns throughoutthe memorial, located on the south side of the State Capitol grounds. There are names of firefighters from central Minnesota inscribed on
the memorial. The communities of Sauk Centre, Melrose and St Cloudare among those who have lost firefighters in the line of duty. Please
remember the fire services fallen, not only from Minnesota, but all thathave perished from across the United States.
A small percentage of calls are for actual fires, as most are for rescues. We have many elderly people living in our towns, so most calls are formedical attention, he said. Support from the city and nearby rural residents remains as strong asever, according to Derichs. We can manage with just one big fundraiser every year, our fall steakfry. Its always well-attended, even though it takes place during harvest time. Many familes order take-outs. Our best steak frys seem to be when it rainedthat same day. Other support comes from equipment grants. Derichs recruits helpfrom Neil Meierhofer, a member of the Belgrade Fire Department. At 23 members, Derichs admits the department could use more members. Training requirements are a huge reason why its difficult to get newmembers. They need 150 hours of training to start out. Once they get on,generally the pride kicks in right away and the training doesnt appear assubstantial as it initially does. Serving on a small town fire department is a far cry from being in atown like Richmond or Cold Spring. If you leave your pager on, youll hear calls in those towns almostonce a day. Here we get just one or two calls a month. Theres no nearbyrailroad and no lakes that need special rescue equipment, he added.Derichs recalls while growing up that the power often went out in Elrosa, which created other work for the fire department. One time we were at a friends who used an oil burner to keep thehouse warm. When the power went out, the firemen started the gas pumpto the fire halls cistern and hauled water to homes. I thought it was for bathsand kept thinking why would people take baths in cold water? but later Ilearned it was simply to flush toilets. It was common to be without power fortwo or three days at a time.
The State of Minnesota has 714 registered fire departments. WhileElrosa may be one of the smaller departments of that group, it doesnt holda back seat to anyone in terms of pride or willingness to do whats neededto help neighbors in their time of need. Mentally it can be tough at times responding to calls, especially thebig fires or car accidents. Luckily they are few and far between. Every call stillgets your heart racing. You never know what could happen when you geton the scene. We work together like one big family and do our best to makethings better when people need us the most, Derichs concluded.
