Q. Tell us a bit about your

educational background.

A. I have a Ph. D in Genetics. I went to A. I have a Ph. D in Genetics. I went to

College at the University of Nebraska

where I studied Biochemistry. For grad

school, I went to the University of

Washington for Genetics. I then did a

post-doc with Doug Wallace in mitochon-

drial research for a year and a half.

the lab with him.

Then, I started working with Dr. Jafari,

who discovered a plant that can extend

lifespan and slow aging. She wanted to

study its mechanism, so she was referred

to Doug, who referred her to me. I began

working with her full time in 2007.

Q. What is your field of interest?

A. Mainly, it is anti-aging. The big

question is “Why do we age, and can we

do anything about it?” To me, I think we

can. For example, a lobster can get

bigger and stronger as it gets older, so

clearly aging is something that doesn’t

have to happen. Calorie restriction is

something we have found that can slow something we have found that can slow

aging down. Things like cinnamon, rose

petals, and green tea can extend

lifespan. I look at the individual path-

ways and feed botanicals to flies and

observe them. We want to identify the

active molecule. I don’t see a reason

for aging, from a biochemical point of

view.

Q. What do you teach at UCI?

A. A few years ago at UCI, I began a

speech class when pharmacy schools

started to require it. I looked at dif-

ferent syllabi and took common themes to

form my class. For a final, students do

a science and medicine topic and present

it as if they are giving a mini seminar.

For physiology lab, it is more computer

based. But I have mixed feelings about

it because in order to get a good handle

on physiology, you have to work with

actual animal organs. There are good ad-

vantages to computer-based labs though.

Q. What kind of advice do you have

for students?

A. College is radically different from A. College is radically different from

high schol. You need to be responsible

for yourself. Study a little over a long

time rather than cramming the night

before. Read the syllabus! For research,

talk to the professor. When you go into

an interview, be sure to know what the

research is about. Don’t come in clueresearch is about. Don’t come in clue-

less. Once you get in, push yourself to

do something sufficient to be co-author

on a paper. Come back with information

and data the profesor can put on a

paper.

MYTH #5: IF I TAKE TIME OFF AFTER GRADUATING, I’LL LOOK WEAK TO PHARMACY SCHOOLSFALSE! TAKING TIME OFF CAN MAKE YOU APPEAR EVEN FALSE! TAKING TIME OFF CAN MAKE YOU APPEAR EVEN MORE WELL-ROUNDED AS STUDENTS WITH MORE LIFE EXPERIENCE OFTEN WORK BETTER WITH PATIENTS. TAKE THE TIME TO STRENGTHEN YOUR APPLICATION THROUGH EXTRACURRICULARS OR VOLUNTEER WORK; HONE YOUR INTERPERSONAL SKILLS; AND TO BE YOUNG. MAKE YOUR BREAK MEANINGFUL AND DON’T BE AFRAID TO WAIT BEFORE APPLYING. BEFORE APPLYING.

MYTH #4: PHARMACY SCHOOLS WON’T LOOK AT ME IF I DON’T DO RESEARCH.

FALSE, WHAT PHARMACY SCHOOLS ARE REALLY FALSE, WHAT PHARMACY SCHOOLS ARE REALLY LOOKING FOR IS THAT YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE IN THE

FIELD AND THAT PHARMACY IS SOMETHING YOU’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT. VOLUNTEER AT A HOSPITAL, WORK AS A TECHNICIAN, TAKE UP A LEADERSHIP

ROLE IN A CAMPUS ORGANIZATION; ANYTHING THAT DISPLAYS THAT DEDICATION. RESEARCH IS NOT

MANDATORY, BUT IF YOU DO DECIDE TO PURSUE IT, MANDATORY, BUT IF YOU DO DECIDE TO PURSUE IT, MAKE SURE IT’S SOMETHING YOU’RE INTERESTED IN

AND GET INVOLVED!

MYTH #3: I HAVE TO BE A SCIENCE MAJOR TO APPLY TO PHARMACY SCHOOL

FALSE: AS LONG AS YOU FULFILL THE PREREQUISITE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE INSTITUTION YOU’RE

APPLYING FOR, YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A BIOLOGY/-CHEM/OTHER SCIENCE MAJOR

MYTH #2: ALL PHARMACISTS DO IS DISPENSE DRUGS

THOUGH THAT STILL REMAINS AN IMPORTANT COMPONE-THOUGH THAT STILL REMAINS AN IMPORTANT COMPONE-NET, USUALLY TECHNICIANS ARE THE ONES FILLING

PRESCRIPTIONS. PHARMACISTS PROVICE A SECOND SET OF EYES, ACTING AS GUARDIANS FOR PATIENT SAFETY.

THEY ENSURE DOCTORS ARE PRESCRIBING MEDICA-TIONS CORRECTLY, COUNSEL PATIENTS ON DIRECTIONS

AND DRUG-DRUG INTERACTIONS, AND EVEN PROVIDE

MYTH #1: THERE’S NOT MUCH I CAN DO AS A PHARMACIST BESIDES WORKING IN A COMMUNITY PHARMACY.

FALSE! THE WONDERFUL THING ABOUT THE PHARMACY FIELD IS THE VERSATI-LITY IN CAREER OPTIONS. HERE’S A SMALL SAMPLE:

- CLINICAL, NUCLEAR, ACADEMIA, INDUSTRY, AMBULATORY, REGULATORY

MYTH #6: THERE ARE PLENTY OF PHARMACISTS.DUE TO RECENT LEGISLATIVE CHANGES, WE’RE DUE TO RECENT LEGISLATIVE CHANGES, WE’RE EXPERIENCING A SHORTAGE OF HEALTH CARE PROVI-DERS. DESPITE THIS SHORTAGE, THE NUMBER OF PATIENTS WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE SO THERE WILL BE A NEED FOR MORE PHARMACISTS. ADDITIONAL-LY, IT’S AN EXCITING TIME TO ENTER THE FIELD AS PHARMACISTS ARE FURTHER INTEGRATED INTO HEALTH CARE TEAMS THROUGH MEDICATION MANAGEMENT THERAPY.

Multimedia Resources CenterStudent Resources:

Ever find yourself needing a camera, laptop, or even a pesky USB for lab? Did you know you can just rent one from UCI?If you didn’t know that then your missing out on one the best student resources on campus! The Multimedia Resources Center (MCR), pictured to the left allows UCI students to rent multimedia equipment for a few hours and sometimes a few days (depending on the type of rental), and all students need is a an active UCINETid, a UCI ID card, and a valid offical photo ID (driver’s license, identification card, etc.). The MCR also has computer labs with both MAC and PC desktop computers, scanners, and there is even an electric keyboard on site for students to use. Listed below are some of the items avaliable to rent:

The MCR is located at the Ayala Science Library, and is the door to the right of the library entrance.
