Hello Sisters!

In September 1971, I was a somewhat timid 24 year-old attending my first Nashville ADPi Alumnae Association meeting. Forty-three years later, I’m serving my third term as President of the group. Just imagine the memories and friendships I’ve made!!!

I am an Epsilon Delta (Western Kentucky University) and consider myself blessed to have been associated with this wonderful group of women for so long. Life-long friendships have been formed and I look forward to all of the new friendships yet to come.

There are so many outstanding elements to this group and the first one that comes to mind is our diversity - in our interests, our professions, our backgrounds, our faiths, our service, our families, our colleges and universities and our

chapters. We are all so different, yet bound together by our common love of Alpha Delta Pi and all that it represents.

I want to encourage each one of you to join us this year for one or all of the many opportunities provided for renewing or creating friendships - our regular monthly programs (some really fun things are planned for this year),

our monthly Sister Suppers (great food and fun fellowship) or our Happy Hour, which is just that - happy times getting to know each other better. There will also be opportunities to serve, like our Hoppin’ Hounds event in the spring to benefit Nashville’s Ronald McDonald

House or working with the Zeta Rho chapter at Vanderbilt, just to name a few.

I speak for our entire Executive Board and the active membership of our Alumnae Association when I say “Welcome.” We look forward to creating memories and friendships with you!

Loyally,

MaryDe, President

September: The Woodland Violet, which

grows wild, is the official flower for ADPi. Because it is unavailable for purchase, the African Violet is used to symbolize it. HoltKamp Nurseries in Nashville introduced the Optimara brand name in 1977, which is the Earth’s largest grower of African Violets. You will have the opportunity to meet this year’s officers, hear about our volunteer and social offerings. Let’s kick off the year in style!

Panhellenic Update

The Nashville Area Panhellenic Alumnae Association represents 24 of 26 Panhellenic sororities in the U.S. We are women volunteering in the community, encouraging high school women to go Greek, raising money for college scholarships, and hosting Sorority 101.

In 2015 NAPAA has committed to awarding five $1000 college scholarships. We meet the second Monday evening of each month. Check out www.nashvillepanhellenic.org for more information. All Greeks are invited to participate in quarterly social gatherings. Like them on Facebook to be in the know for upcoming activities to mix and mingle: www.facebook.com/nashpan.

The annual Panhellenic Luncheon for 2015 will be Saturday, April 11th, at Richland Country Club. ADPi is committed to fill a luncheon table and obtain $450+ in donated items for the silent auction. Sisters Alice Yopp and Cheryl Oglesby

welcome your assistance in collecting baskets and donations.

Last year donations included photography sessions, gift cards, spa services, concert memorabilia, Greek wear, floral arrangements, jewelry, beauty, bath and hair products. If you’d like to make a donation, please contact Alice at [email protected] or Cheryl at [email protected]. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us for this fun-filled luncheon!

What an exciting year it has been!

Last year we introduced several new

fundraising events to help raise

support not only for RMH but for a

few other local Nashville

philanthropies as well.

To give you an idea of the types of

new events, here’s a quick recap:

shopping at Spruce kicked off our

first meeting in September with 20%

of the proceeds coming back to our

association. In January, we enjoyed

plates of never ending pancakes to

help support the Ronald McDonald

House (RMH). Our Spring event,

the Hoppin’ Hounds Easter Egg

Hunt gave us the opportunity to

work closely with our Zeta Rho

sisters and promote RMH along

with our Alumnae Association.

What is on the calendar for the

year to come? Nashville Alpha Delta

Pi Alumnae shirts and accessories

will be sold to our members. A

percentage of the proceeds will be

donated back directly to our

Association.

Additionally Spruce will be hosting

another shopping day for our

group - with great deals to boot!

And of course, we’ll be hosting

the Hoppin’ Hounds Easter Egg

Hunt again in April.

Dates have not been nailed down at

this point, so make sure to check

out our website for more updates!

We will definitely be in need of

volunteers for these events, so be

on the lookout for the sign-up

sheets that will go out in the

coming weeks.

If you have any questions, please

contact Sister Julie Cox at

[email protected].

Fundraising Update !Our new initiatives started with a bang - let’s keep the momentum going!

ABOUT NASHVILLE RMH:

We are very blessed in the fact there is a Ronald McDonald House right in the heart of Nashville. Since its opening in 1991, the Nashville RMH has served families from all over Tennessee in addition to those from Kentucky and many other states. They’ve even been called home by those from 13 foreign countries. The house has 32 bedrooms with a Family Room on the 5th Floor of the Monroe Carrell Jr. Children’s Hospital.

Our Alumnae Association continues to support the Nashville RMH in ways large and small this year… and we appreciate your participation! Feel free to bring your pull-tabs to meetings and Pam Zimmerman will see that they are delivered to the House. She’ll have “collection houses” available at each meeting for anyone would like one.

Get to Know Your Sisters !Sister Rachel Hunkler gives some insight into the life of a recent graduate and the true meaning of “We Live for Each Other”

“Leadership requires confidence tempered with

humility and courage blended with tolerance.”

This line has always been my favorite in the Creed of Alpha Delta Pi and one that truly embodies my views on leadership and on life. As a recent college graduate currently living and working with a Fulbright teaching grant in Spain, I find that every day I must be confident yet humble and courageous, yet tolerant in order to be a successful leader, teacher and American cultural ambassador here in Spain.

I am originally from Nashville, went to Father Ryan High School and graduated from the University of Alabama in May 2013 with a degree in K-12 Spanish Education. When I received my bid to Eta Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi on August 16, 2009, I could not have imagined then how much joining this sisterhood would end up shaping my entire college career and beyond.

Throughout our four years in college, my sisters and I spent basically every waking moment living in the sorority house. We laughed together, cried together and truly became a family away from here. We attended every Bama football game together and helped rebuild our college of Tuscaloosa after the tornadoes of 2011. My pledge sisters are still my closest friends - in fact, my roommate in the sorority house for two years also received a Fulbright grant to teach English in Madrid, and thus has remained my roommate even this year across the Big Pond.

More than simply giving me lifelong friendships and a full social calendar, my involvement in Eta chapter also gave me valuable leadership experiences that have contributed to my successes post-college. During my four years as a collegiate member of Eta chapter, I served as Chaplain,

Scholarship Chair and Membership Education Vice President. I particular, my experience as Membership Executive Vice President has been extremely beneficial to my current job. The skills in organization, communication, leadership and collaboration that define working as a sorority officer are ones that I use every day in my work in education.

Just as my collegiate experiences in ADPi helped set me up for success with Fulbright, my experiences this year living and working abroad as a Fulbright are now shaping my goals for the future. My goal is to one day bring more foreign language and cultural exchange programs to schools in Southeastern United States. Of course, I also hope to become an active member of the ADPi Alumnae Association once I’m back on American soil as well.

For those sisters currently in the transition between college and the adult world, I encourage you to hold on tight to your sisters during this time of change and to use the connections and experiences you had as collegiate member. No matter how old we are or where we live across the world, ADPi sisterhood is truly for life.

News from Zeta Rho

Mentoring Program

As we prepare for another academic year, our Nashville Alumnae look forward to again providing a mentoring experience to the Zeta Rho Seniors at Vanderbilt through our “Delta to Pi” program.

While the program begins in January, during the fall we will hold an informal “Introduction to Mentoring” workshop for any area alums who would like to participate. You do not have to be an active member of our alum group to participate. All we ask is that you have at least three years of work experience following graduation and be willing to offer assistance to a senior.

Our program is not entirely driven by your profession or only a business preparation step for the seniors. Rather, it is an introduction into a life after college including how to

relocate, locate sisters/alum associations in other states along with finding employment or continuing education in another city. Our hope is to help prepare these seniors to enter our world of alumnae status with the hope they will continue to give back to Alpha Delta Pi.

Your time contribution can be as large or small as your schedule allows. We ask you to attend the initial kickoff reception in January and to attend Jewel Degree in April as your senior takes her final steps to Pi status.

For details or to sign up, please contact Beverly Sledge at 615-973-2846 or [email protected]. !
