Legacy Park is currently being developed on an 8 acre site located in the University North Park shopping area in northwest Norman. The site is just south of the Academy Sports and Outdoors store. Once completed, it will be a park unlike any other in the Norman Park Sys-tem. Not being designed as a typical public park with playgrounds and sports fields; it will function as an ur-ban park, able to host large gatherings and featuring an amphitheater, large pond with lighted display fountains, walkways, public art and extensive landscaping. The de-sign was created by Scott Howard, with Howard-Fairbairn Site Design, a Landscape Architecture firm out of Ed-mond, Oklahoma. The park design was recognized with an award of excellence by the American Society of Land-scape Architects in 2009.

The eastern boundary of the site fronts on 24th Avenue NW. Two one-way drives will provide east and west ac-cess between 24th Avenue and Legacy Park Dr. These drives will frame the most prominent public art location at the park. Legacy Park Dr. will include a drop-off/pick-up area with an enhanced checker board street paving pattern, framed by pedestrian entry portals on the east and west sides.

Once inside the entry por-tals, visitors to the park will find the promenade walk-way that circles a one acre pond, which is the main fea-ture of the park. The pond will include an extensive and

very sophisticated system of fountains. There will be 21 spray nozzles set up in an arc in the middle of the pond.

These will provide steady vertical water flow, the height

of which can be adjusted to fluctuate through a computer program. There will also be 21 water cannons in the arc which will shoot a tall vertical stream high into the air, again on a programmed schedule. An arbor wraps around the west side of the pond and covers the west end of the promenade. There will be water scuppers within the brick pillars of the arbor that will provide a constant water flow into the pond. All of the fountains and scuppers will be lit with red, blue and green LED lighting, which can also be programmed to coordinate with the water movement.

A restroom and maintenance storage facility is located in the northwest corner of the park which is accessed by a pedestrian walkway that meanders through the large grass berms on the west side of the site. There will be several public art locations along this walkway.

Another highlight of the park is the amphitheater that fea-tures a contemporary de-signed stage cover and grass seating area that will accom-modate approximately 700 people. This will be a very popular component of the park which will attract visitors from many locations outside of the Norman area.Extensive landscaping and pedestrian lighting throughout the park will complete this project, making it the jewel of the Norman Park System.

Project construction started in March of 2013 and is now scheduled to be completed in October of 2014. Proj-ect costs are expected to be approximately $6.5 million. Three restaurant sites are planned adjacent to the north and south sides of the park. Once completed, the park will provide the perfect backdrop for a nice evening out on the patio!

Superman, Batman, Spiderman and a few other well-known Super Hero’s will make a rare public appear-ance and also bring their Mom’s out for a planned date night at the Norman Parks and Recreation Annual Mummy and Son Masquerade Ball.

Years ago Mummy’s a.k.a. “Mom’s” in Norman got what they have long been asking and desperately wanted which is event to call their own to counter act the hugely popular Daddy Daughter Dance which takes place every February. The staff at Norman Parks and Recreation came up with the Mummy and Son Masquerade Ball, a Halloween themed special event.

The Mummy and Son Dance is many ways the complete opposite to the Daddy Daughter Dance. The Dance is informal, every one including Mummy’s wear their best Halloween costumes, there is a Haunted House which many youngsters have proclaimed “the Scariest House in all of Norman,” and don’t forget about the inflatable moon bounce. There is also a dance floor and a DJ throwing out the perfect mix between top 40 and tradition-al Halloween tunes. The things that are similar when comparing the two different dances is both the Mummy and Son and Daddy Daughter Dances provide a unique experience where parent and child can spend a fun and safe evening together while building family memories that everyone can truly cherish.

This years Mummy and Son Masquerade Ball will be on Saturday, October 25th at the 12th Avenue Recreation Center. There will be two dances named after the tradition Halloween colors; the Orange Dance at 5:00-6:30 and the Black Dance at 7:00-8:30. Tickets will go on sale September 10th at all City of Norman Recreation and Community Centers along with the Main Parks and Recreation office at City Hall. Tickets will be $8 per ticket every person, old or young needs a ticket and NO DAD’s allowed at the dance. For more information on the Mummy Son Dance please call 292-7275.
