Hello friends,Thank you for making 2014 a wonderful year of progress for Family Promise Metrowest (FPM). As you know, FPM is an organization that receives no money from local, state or federal government. We rely completely on the contributions of time and treasure from you- the congregations, individuals, community groups, foundations and businesses who support FPM.

As we continue to grow, the heart and soul of our mission are the congregations and volunteers providing safe, warm lodging, delicious meals and welcoming companionship for our guest families. These supports are extraordinary not only in terms of time donated but also as measured in their financial value of direct in-kind services to our guests. In addition, you have all supported us as financial donors, understanding the need for professional caseworkers, transportation and van drivers, daycare, transitional housing rent assistance, and administration. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You for all you have done and continue to do to ensure our success.

In 2014, FPM served ten families with 17 children, including two families who moved into transitional housing in the community. In May 2015, we are now serving four families in transitional housing as well as four families in our shelter program hosted by our congregations. That is twice as many families as FPM was serving two years ago. To make this possible, we now have 17 host congregations and 31 support congregations generously giving their time and energy to serve our families.

While we are proud of our ability to make a difference, the number of homeless families in the Metrowest Boston area continues to grow. Earning a sustainable income and finding affordable housing are still impeding families from long term success…and the average age of a person who is homeless in Massachusetts is still only 8 years old.

In light of this growing need for FPM services and the improved stability of FPM’s organization and finances, the Board of Directors and FPM staff have recently spent two weekends reviewing and updating FPM’s strategic plan. When complete, details will be shared, but the plan will certainly involve more transitional housing and plans for addressing the need for affordable housing. Strategies include the possibility of renting on a long-term basis or purchasing housing units that could be used for one or two years for “transitional” housing for families prior to obtaining permanent housing. It will also involve additional staff to help our guests qualify for and obtain better paying jobs so they can be self-sustaining in permanent housing.

The year 2014 also involved transitions at FPM. In August, we said Good Bye to Beth Cooper, our wonderful Executive Director for six years, and we welcomed Sue Crossley who stepped in seamlessly to begin to lead FPM to the next level. In January 2015, Mike Donoghue stepped down as Chair of the Board after three years of terrific leadership and a total of six years of dedicated, enthusiastic service on the board. We are very grateful and highly indebted to Beth and Mike for their service to FPM.

While statistics and organizational summaries give an overview of our services, it is the individu-al stories that truly express the impact Family Promise has on the families we serve. Here is one such story.

Yusuf, Jane and daughter Joviah arrived at Family Promise Metrowest in Decem-ber 2013. Yusuf had a college education and work experience, yet at the time he and Jane were both unemployed. With the assistance of the case manager and volunteers, Yusuf wrote a resume and prepared for interviews, which led to his first place of employment. Jane decid-ed to first pursue education and enrolled in a Certified Nursing Assistant Program that led to a full time job. Funding from our network paid for Jane’s education, day care, transportation and the case manager. Volunteers provided support for resume writing, food, clothing and shelter for the family.

By September 2014, Yusuf and Jane had both obtained full time employment, secured subsidized day care, and saved a total of $4,600. Having met their goals, they found an apartment in Framingham and moved into our transitional housing program. Over the past 8 months, Yusuf has progressively increased his income while Jane obtained her driver’s license and has recently enrolled in classes at Mass Bay Community College. They continue to save, with over $8,000 in savings.

Yusuf and Jane are an inspiration to us all. Their accomplishments are a result of sheer deter-mination and perseverance along with the support provided by Family Promise staff and our network of volunteers. We look forward to their continued success.
