In its inaugural season the Embry-Riddle softball team fin-ished 16-25 overall and 8-8 in Sun Conference play. Seeded sixth in the conference tournament, the Eagles went 3-2 to earn a third-place finish. Head Coach Sarah Lockett believes this year’s team can improve on last year’s results.

“I think we have built on the foundation that we established last year,” Lockett said. “We worked very hard in the fall on de-veloping our culture and then introducing a new softball strategy concept to our team that the girls have really taken to. Our ex-pectations are to go out every day and follow the process and play the best softball that we can. I think if the girls do that, then we will be very competitive in The Sun Conference and possibly on a national level.”

Infielders

Dee Espinosa and Sarah Huey were two of the anchors of the Eagle lineup last year, playing primarily catcher and second base, respectively. Lockett expects that they will be leaned on heavily again in 2014.

Espinosa started all 41 games in 2013 and earned All-Con-ference accolades, hitting .358 and leading the team in doubles (14), RBIs (41), slugging percentage (.593), walks (17) and sac-rifice flies (7).

“Dee is going to be the anchor behind the plate for us,” Lock-ett remarked. “She brings a lot of tools back there and has great softball knowledge. Offensively, I am looking for her to have a big year.”

Huey also started all 41 games last year and was an All-Con-ference selection, leading the team with a .444 batting average, .470 on-base percentage, 63 hits, 80 total bases, 38 runs scored and 15 stolen bases.

“Sarah was one of the leading hitters in the country last year, and I am expecting her to have another solid year,” Lockett stat-ed. “She’ll play second and short for us and she’ll be one of the mainstays near the top of our lineup.”

Joining Espinosa and Huey in the Eagle infield will be three newcomers. Junior transfer Talia Barraco is expected to start at first base with freshmen Jennifer Estrada and Anna Battison see-ing significant playing time at second base and third base, re-spectively.

Barraco comes to Embry-Riddle after playing two sea-sons at St. Petersburg College. Last season, Barraco hit .280 with 10 doubles and 23 RBIs.

“Talia has been an abso-lutely fantastic pick-up for us,” Lockett commented. “She can bunt well, hit for average, runs fairly well, and plays solid de-fense. She’s going to hit around the top of the lineup and play mostly first base and maybe some at third for us.”

Estrada was a three-time first team All-League selection and a two-time defensive player of the year at Reedley High School in Reedley, Calif.

“Jennifer is going to get a chance to play a lot at the beginning of the season so that she can really show us what she can do,” Lockett said. “She is primarily a middle infielder who can also play the outfield, but I think she’ll be either at second base or shortstop most of the time. She has great range and a great read on the ball at the middle infield positions. I’m really excited to see what she can do this year and throughout her career.”

Battison played catcher and outfield at South Delta Second-ary School in Tsawwassen, B.C., but she has proven to be the best option at third base for Lockett and the Eagles.

“Anna has been a tremendous pick-up for us,” Lockett re-marked. “She’ll probably start for us at third base where she has a fantastic arm. She also played catcher in the fall and showed us that she can legitimately play that position if we need her to. She is the fastest player on our team and I am looking forward to seeing her develop in her freshman season.”

Outfielders

Coach Lockett utilized a number of different outfielders last season, with seven different players starting at least five games in the outfield. All seven of those players are returning and will likely see time in the outfield again in 2014, along with Haleigh Lewis, who is going to play primarily in the outfield this season after playing shortstop and third base last year.

Lewis started 35 games last season, hitting .324 with seven doubles, two home runs and 19 RBIs.

“Haleigh is one of our leading hitters, so it’s important for us to find a place for her in the lineup,” Lockett stated. “We’ve decided to give her a chance to play some in the outfield this sea-son, though she might still play some at third base and shortstop. As long as she hits like she did last season, she’ll be in the middle of the lineup for us.”

Another mainstay in the Eagle outfield will be Jessica Osteen. Osteen made 33 starts in 2013, hitting .317 with six doubles, two home runs and 15 runs batted in.

“Jessica brings a lot of consistency at the plate, so we’ll need to find a way to keep her in the lineup,” Lockett commented.

“We’re looking at having her play predominantly in left field or as a DP, but like Haleigh, as long as she hits, she’ll be in the lineup.”

Samantha Smith started 35 games in right field for Embry-Riddle in 2013, and she will have the opportunity to earn a major-ity of the starts in that same position this year. Smith hit .220 with 22 hits and 20 runs scored last year.

“In the fall, Samantha was one of the best hitters on the team,” Lockett said. “She’s shown a really big improvement of-fensively, so she’s earned the starting spot in right field. I’m ex-cited to see her have a really good senior season.”

Alex Wood saw a lot of playing time in center field last year, which is something that Lockett believes will continue into 2014. Wood hit .345, the fifth-best average on the team last season. She also scored 17 runs and was 12-for-15 in stolen bases.

“Alex will get a lot of time in the outfield, predominantly in center but also in left,” Lockett remarked. “She brings a lot of speed and athleticism to the outfield, which allows her to run down balls really well. I want to use her in the eight or nine hole in the lineup, where she can serve as a secondary leadoff hitter for us.”

Chanley Burge started over half of ERAU’s games last season, but Lockett sees a new role for her this year. Burge hit .217 for the season but came on strong in the conference tournament, batting .500 with two home runs and four runs scored.

“We’re looking to use Chanley in a role where she would come in to pinch run or play defense late in games,” Lockett stated. “She can make plays in the outfield that some of our other athletes can’t make, so it’s crucial for us to be able to use her late in a game when we have the lead, so that we can ensure we have the best defensive team on the field.”

Along the same lines as Burge, Ariel Brayer will serve as an important role player in 2014. Brayer batted .234 with three doubles, a home run and seven RBIs.

“Ariel is another athlete that we see as someone who can provide a lift off the bench, whether it be in the field or pinch run-ning or getting a clutch hit or putting a bunt down when we need it,” Lockett commented. “She will play center field for us in some key situations as well as serving as a pinch hitter late in games.”

Rae Heuer is another option for the Eagles in right field. Heuer had nine starts in 2013, collecting two hits, six walks and five runs scored.

“Rae didn’t get a chance to play a whole lot last year due to injuries, so this is going to be sort of like a freshman year for her,” Lockett said. “If she can get going offensively, we’re go-ing to try to get her in the lineup every day, because she can absolutely mash.”

Jori Walan saw some time in left field last season and was also one of the team’s most-used pinch runners. Walan started seven times last year, recording three hits, four stolen bases and seven runs scored.

“Jori will see some time in the outfield and we will use her again as a pinch runner in key situations,” Lockett remarked. “She is another one of our role players that will play a pivotal role in the team’s success this year. Coming off the bench isn’t the most glamorous job in softball, but it is a very important one, and Jori is capable of doing that in big moments for us.”

Pitchers

Alexis Estrada and Robi Zimmerman were the two work-horses for the Eagles in 2013, logging 91.5% of the innings in the circle. This season, Lockett expects much of the same from them.

Estrada went 11-10 with a 5.49 ERA last year, hurling 116.1 innings with 11 complete games and two shutouts, strik-ing out a team-high 106 batters.

“Alexis is going to eat up innings for us, just like she did last year,” Lockett stated. “She is very consistent and we’ll be looking to her to be that stabilizing force throughout the sea-son. I am always confident in giving her the ball and expecting her to keep us in the game for the full seven innings.”

Zimmerman started all 41 games last year, including 21 as a pitcher. She finished 5-12 with a 6.96 ERA in the circle, leading the team in complete games (13) and innings pitched (120.1). At the plate, Zimmerman batted .357, third-best on the team, with 10 doubles, five home runs and 34 RBIs.

“Robi played a lot of first and third base last year in addi-tion to pitching and hitting, so this year we’re going to have her focus on just pitching and hitting,” Lockett commented. “We want to keep her fresh so that she can come in and pitch at a high level late in games. She’s also going to hit in the heart of the lineup and I think she’s going to have a great year at the plate and in the circle.”

Joining Estrada and Zimmerman on the Eagle pitching staff is freshman Taylor Cowan. Cowan, who could also see some time in the outfield and will be a hitter for the Eagles, played infield, outfield and pitched at Eau Gallie High School in Mel-bourne, Fla.

“Taylor gives us some flexibility with what she can do both offensively and defensively,” Lockett said. “She is a good pitcher that will allow us to rest Alexis and Robi at times, but she can also play the outfield and she has a pretty good stick, so I think she can help us at the plate, too. She’s a really good fit for our team and I’m excited to have her for the next few years.”

Schedule

The Eagles open up the 2014 season by hosting a five-team tournament at the ERAU Softball Stadium Feb. 7-9. Em-bry-Riddle is slated to take on Mobile, Georgia Gwinnett and Daytona State during the three-day event.

The following weekend, the Blue and Gold will hit the road to take on Point at the NAIA Southern Challenge in Clermont, Fla., before traveling to Boca Raton, Fla. for a doubleheader against NCAA II Lynn.

Following a two-week break, the Eagles return home for back-to-back doubleheaders against Madonna (Mar. 2) and William Penn (Mar. 3).

The weekend of Mar. 7-9 Embry-Riddle will take part in the Gulf Coast Invitational in Gulf Shores, Ala., a tournament that features some of the top NAIA programs in the country. The Eagles are scheduled to face preseason No. 23 Central Methodist as well as St. Thomas, Campbellsville and Faulkner during pool play Mar. 7-8, with a bracketed tournament slated for Mar. 9.

After hosting Hastings (Mar. 16) and Talladega (Mar. 19) in a pair of non-conference doubleheaders, the Blue and Gold will open up Sun Conference play on the road. ERAU will play at Ave Maria on Mar. 21, followed by a trip to Warner the next day.

Embry-Riddle will host Columbia College in its final non-conference contests of the regular season on Mar. 24 before wrapping up the road slate at St. Thomas (Mar. 29) and North-wood (Mar. 30).

The Eagles close out the season with four home confer-ence doubleheaders beginning with Thomas (Apr. 5) and South Carolina Beaufort (Apr. 6). The following weekend Southeastern visits Daytona Beach on Apr. 12, with the final doubleheader set for Apr. 16 against Webber International.

The Sun Conference Tournament will once again be held at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla., with the top seven teams advancing to the tournament. Games begin on May 1 with the championship set to be decided on May 3. The winner of the tournament earns the conference’s automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship.

The Opening Round of the NAIA National Championship will take place on 10 campus sites around the country May 12-14, with the winners advancing to the final site tournament May 23-29 in Columbus, Ga.

Following an extensive nationwide search, Sarah Lockett was appointed as the first-ever head coach of the Embry-Riddle softball program in Aug. 2011. Lockett, who is originally from Perth Australia, brought an impressive resume to Embry-Riddle with coaching experience at the collegiate and international levels. She also played at the international level for almost a decade. After competing for the Australian National

Squad from 1998-02, she then went on to compete for Great Britain for four years. She played for Great Britain at the 2003 European Championships, the 2006 KFC World Cup of Softball and the 2006 Softball World Championships before retiring in 2006. Lockett’s collegiate playing career began at Coastal Carolina University where she was a three-year letterwinner with the Chanticleers from 1999-01. In her final season at CCU, she ranked among the nation’s best in home runs (9th), slugging percentage (14th) and RBI (25th) and was subsequently named the 2001 Big South Conference Most Valuable Player. A two-time South East first team All-Region and Big South first team All-Conference selection, Lockett also excelled in the classroom as she was tabbed as the Big South Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2000 and 2001, and was a Verizon first team Academic All-American in 2001. Her prolific career at Coastal Carolina ended with her being ranked among the Chanticleers’ all-time top five in batting average (.374) home runs (37), doubles (44) and slugging percentage (.679) and earned her a spot in the Coastal Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame, where she was inducted in 2006. In 2002, Lockett opted to complete her playing career at Kennesaw State and used her talents to help the Owls advance to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. She started in 57 games, primarily at third base, and hit .406 in the regular season, .353 in the postseason, and totaled 11 homers and 54 RBI on the way to NCAA II first team All-America honors. After wrapping up her career at Kennesaw State in 2002, Lockett stayed on as a graduate assistant coach for two more seasons during which time she helped the Owls to a 99-17 overall record, including a 38-0 win streak in 2004, a Peach Belt Conference Championship, an NCAA Division II Regional title and a trip to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Lockett’s first full-time coaching opportunity came in the fall of 2004, where she was hired as an assistant coach at Coastal Carolina. During Lockett’s four years on the coaching staff, the Chanticleers won the 2006 Big South Conference Tournament Championship and earned a berth in the NCAA Division I Athens regional. The 2006 club set a new single-season program record for home runs with 58, but that mark was eclipsed by the 2007 team that belted out 62 homers. Several student-athletes also garnered individual recognition in the Big South Conference as she helped guide 13 All-Conference selections, 10 All-Tournament team selections, one Conference Tournament MVP, four Academic All-Conference honorees and one conference Scholar Athlete of the Year. In the fall of 2008, Lockett returned to Kennesaw State who was in the process of transitioning from NCAA II to NCAA I. Lockett, who served as the Owls’ chief hitting instructor and worked with infield defense, helped Kennesaw State to their first-ever appearance in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament. In her three seasons as an assistant coach, six players earned All-Atlantic Sun recognition, five were named to the conference All-Freshman team and two were All-Tournament selections. In the summer of 2011, Lockett was given the opportunity to coach at the highest level of international competition when she was se-lected to the staff of the Australian National Team. She served as an assistant coach for Team Australia in the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Women’s Championship in Vancouver and the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City, both in July. Lockett has been a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association since 2004. She earned an undergraduate degree from Coastal Carolina in Business Administration in 2002 and completed her Masters degree in Conflict Management at Kennesaw State in 2003.



ASSISTANT COACHES

Glynn TollesonAssistant Coach | 2nd Season

Embry-Riddle softball head coach Sarah Lockett announced the hiring of Glynn Tolleson as the program’s first assistant coach in the fall of 2011. Tolleson played collegiate softball at Coastal Carolina under Coach Lockett in 2006-07. Tolleson has coached the Texas Peppers travel ball team in Houston, Texas for the past four years. The Peppers compete in the highest level of ASA Softball and are regarded as one of the premier travel ball organizations in the state of Texas, holding a 100% recruitment rate for high school athletes at the collegiate level. Tolleson has also worked as a self-employed private softball instructor since 2007. Tolleson has personally helped over 50 high school student-athletes be recruited to all levels of collegiate softball, including top level programs in the SEC, ACC and Big 12. As a player at Coastal Carolina, Tolleson was named to the Big South All-Tournament team in each of her two seasons. Tolleson started 50 games at catcher in 2006, hitting .273 in conference play and ranking second in the Big South Conference with 11 sacrifice bunts. In 2007, Tolleson started 56 games behind the plate, hitting seven home runs and leading the team in sac bunts (12) and walks (25). Prior to transferring to CCU in 2005, Tolleson spent two seasons at Radford University. While at RU, Tolleson started 75 games, earning Big South All-Tournament honors as a freshmen after hitting .273 with five doubles, 15 RBI and 12 stolen bases in the regular season. Tolleson graduated from Coastal Carolina in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a minor in Political Science. Tolleson was named to the Dean’s List and to the Big South Conference President’s Honor Roll four times each; her cumulative GPA was a 3.4. Tolleson was also a member of Upsilon Eta, a charter of Lambda Pi Eta, the Official Honor Society of the National Communica-tion Association (NCA).

Anda UdrisAthletic Trainer | 1st Season

Anda Udris joined the Embry-Riddle staff as an Assistant Athletic Trainer in the Sports Medicine Department in August 2013. Udris earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Athletic Training from Missouri State in May 2011 and completed her Master’s in Athletic Training from Oklahoma State in May 2013. At Missouri State, Udris was a member of the track and field team, while also serving as an athletic training assistant for foot-ball, men’s basketball and men’s soccer. At Oklahoma State, Udris served as the primary athletic trainer for coed cheerleading squad that won the 2012 and 2013 NCA National Championships. In April 2013, Udris was named the Oklahoma State Athletic Training Preceptor of the Year. Udris is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, the Mid-America Athletic Trainers’ Association and the Missouri Athletic Trainers’ Association.

The Sun Conference, formerly the Florida Sun Con-ference, is heading into its 24th season of competition and continues to be one of the most successful inter-collegiate athletic conferences in the National Associa-tion of Intercollegiate Athletics.

The institutions in the conference believe in strong educational commitment combined with balanced ath-letic competition. Originally formed in March 1990 as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (FIAC), The Sun Conference was established as a conference for small independent institutions within the NAIA. The name “Florida Sun Conference” was adopted in 1992. The league unveiled its new name, “The Sun Conference” on August 18, 2008 to be inclusive of member schools from Georgia and South Carolina.

Under the guidance of commissioner Mark Pope, the league sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field, and field and women’s vol-leyball.

Sun Conference teams are perennial contenders for national titles. In 2013-14, 36 teams made national tournament appearances. The Embry-Riddle men’s tennis team captured the 2013 NAIA National Cham-pionship while the Eagles’ women’s golf and baseball teams finished third in their respective national cham-pionships. Additionally, the league racked up numer-ous individual national titles as Embry-Riddle’s Patrick Besch won the ITA/NAIA National singles title, while the Eagles’ Reta Woodard, Nicole Bonk and Mike Edwards won national titles in track and field. North-wood’s Ra’Shad James was named the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball Player of the Year in 2013 while ERAU’s Deni Zmak was named the Ward Ballinger

Award winner in men’s tennis. Additionally, Embry-Riddle’s Dave Paschal earned national Coach of the Year honors for men’s tennis.

In 2013-14 alone, 64 student-athletes from the league were named NAIA All-Americans, while 144 TSC athletes were also named Daktronics-NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes.

Embry-Riddle finished first in The Sun Conference Commissioner’s Cup, which is awarded annually to the strongest athletic program in the league. Since the league’s inception in 1990, only five teams have cap-tured the Commissioner’s Cup, formerly known as the All-Sports Trophy. Embry-Riddle won its 14th straight cup in 2013-14, continuing to set the mark for cups won. Former member Nova Southeastern is second with five honors, St. Thomas is third (2), while Webber International and Flagler each earned the award during the first two years of the conference.

The roots of The Sun Conference date back to 1990 when the league was originally formed as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Original member-ship consisted of Embry-Riddle, Flagler, Florida Me-morial, Nova (now Nova Southeastern), Palm Beach Atlantic, St. Thomas, Webber International and Warner Southern.

The league grew to nine members with the addition of Northwood in 1994. Between 2002 and 2006, Nova Southeastern, Palm Beach Atlantic and Flagler moved to NCAA II, but the league recruited new mem-bers as SCAD Savannah joined in 2004 followed by Edward Waters in 2006. With the addition of South Carolina Beaufort, Johnson and Wales, Southeastern, Ave Maria and Thomas (Ga.) within the last four years, along with Edward Waters’ move to the Gulf Coast Ath-letic Conference, the league membership now stands at 12 schools.

2013 SEASON IN REVIEW

Eagles Open Inaugural Season at Flagler

Feb. 2, 2013 was a day of firsts for the Embry-Riddle Softball program, but the Eagles fell short of the one first they wanted the most: the first win. The Blue and Gold were swept by Flagler on the road, 10-1 and 11-9.

Embry-Riddle got things off to a promising start as Sarah Huey laced a double off the right-field wall in the program’s first at-bat, missing a home run by just a couple of feet. Two batters later, Dee Espinosa hit a sacrifice fly to score Huey with the first run in program history.

The Saints quickly rallied with two runs in the first and led for the rest of the game, claiming a 10-1 victory.

Game two saw ERAU take an early 2-0 lead only to have Flagler score twice in the first and five times in the second to take a 7-2 lead. In the third inning, Robi Zimmerman hit the first home run in program history, pulling the Eagles within three at 7-4.

Espinosa stepped up in the following inning and launched the first grand slam for the Eagles, putting ERAU ahead, 9-7. The Saints came back with a four-run sixth to win the game, 11-9.

Embry-Riddle Sweeps MarinersOn Feb. 24, the ERAU softball team picked up the first two

wins in program history. Embry-Riddle knocked off Coastal Georgia on the road, 3-2 and 6-3.

The Eagles got off to a fast start in game one, scoring three times in the second inning thanks to RBI singles from Chanley Burge and Samantha Smith and a run via a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead.

CCG got a run in the third and another in the seventh, but Zimmerman was able to secure the 3-2 win, pitching all seven innings to earn the first victory in program history.

Zimmerman singled home Huey to open the scoring in game two and Huey delivered a three-run home run to extend the lead to 4-0. A two-run home run for the Mariners cut the lead to 4-3 in the third, but the Eagles answered with a pair of runs in the seventh to make it 6-3, which would prove to be the final score.

Blue and Gold Sweep Bellevue in First Regular Season Home Games

The Eagles opened up their home field in style, sweeping the visiting Bellevue Bruins with an 8-7 walk-off win in game one and a 4-2 victory in the second game on Mar. 1.

After BU scored first, Embry-Riddle bounced back with a pair of runs in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. Jessica Osteen drilled a double to right field, scoring Haleigh Lewis to tie the game. Krizzy Menez pinch ran for Osteen, promptly stole third base and then scored on a passed ball, giving the Eagles the lead, 2-1.

The Bruins came back with five straight runs to move ahead, 6-2, before Espinosa launched a two-run home run over the left-field fence in the fifth, the first home run ever hit at the ERAU Softball Stadium.

BU scored a run in the seventh to make it 7-4, sending the Eagles to their last at-bat down by three. Sarah Huey started the bottom of the seventh with a solid single to right, and Sa-vannah Smith followed with her first career home run, a two-run shot that made the score 7-6. The next batter, Espinosa, singled through the left side, prompting a pitching change for Bellevue. Zimmerman welcomed the new pitcher a line drive over the head of the left fielder for a double, scoring Espinosa with the game-tying run. After Lewis bunted Zimmerman to third, Rae Heuer entered as a pinch runner for Zimmerman. The Bruins then intentionally walked Osteen and Chanley Burge to load the bases with one out. Melanie Lee came off the bench to pinch hit for Jori Walan and hit an 0-2 pitch towards the second baseman, who misplayed the ball, allowing Heuer to score the game-winning run.

Embry-Riddle got on the board first in game two when Osteen hit a sacrifice fly to score Menez in the bottom of the second inning, putting ERAU ahead, 1-0. The home team add-ed another run in the third when Heuer scored on Savannah Smith’s two-out double, increasing the lead to 2-0.

The Bruins cut the lead in half (2-1) on a sac fly in the

fourth, but Alexis Estrada set down seven of the next eight bat-ters to keep the Eagles in front. Savannah Smith came through with a bases-loaded single in the fifth, scoring Samantha Smith and Heuer, giving the Blue and Gold a 4-1 lead.

In the seventh inning, Bellevue scored a run on a fielder’s choice to cut the deficit to 4-2 and the Bruins had the potential tying run on base with just one out. Estrada showed her poise, striking out Kristin Burhenne for the second out. With a 2-2 count on Matoba, Emily Hester got caught off first base on a pickoff attempt by Espinosa. Lewis eventually applied the tag to end the game and complete the doubleheader sweep.

Eagles Finish Third at Conference Tournament

The Embry-Riddle softball team entered The Sun Confer-ence tournament as the No. 6 seed, but the Eagles outper-formed their seeding, finishing in third place, just one win away from the championship game.

The Blue and Gold opened the tournament with a 7-3 loss to third-seeded Southeastern. ERAU fell behind 4-0 in the third inning and couldn’t mount a comeback against the Fire, falling to the loser’s bracket after the first day of games.

Day two saw the Eagles play two-and-a-half games, includ-ing knocking two teams out of the tournament. The day started with an elimination game against defending tournament cham-pion Webber International. Embry-Riddle jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring on a fielding error and a squeeze play in the first inning. The Warriors cut the lead in half in the second but Sa-vannah Smith singled home Burge in the fourth to regain a two-run lead. WIU scored once in the fifth but the Blue and Gold held on for a 3-2 win, knocking the Warriors out of the tournament.

Next up for the Eagles was another elimination game against Thomas. As they did against WIU, the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a two-run home run off the bat of Zimmerman. The Blue and Gold tacked on four more in the second, scoring single runs on RBI doubles from Wood and Savannah Smith, along with an RBI single from Espinosa.

After Thomas scored a pair in the third to cut the lead to 6-2, ERAU answered with four runs in the fourth keyed by a two-run double from Zimmerman that scored Savannah Smith and Huey. That double put the Eagles ahead 10-2 heading to the fifth.

The Night Hawks plated a run in the top of the fifth to temporarily stave off the mercy rule, but an error in the bottom half allowed Samantha Smith to score, ending the game with the Eagles victorious 11-3 thanks to the mercy rule.

The victory over TU set up a rematch against Southeast-ern, with the winner advancing to the loser’s bracket champi-onship game. The Blue and Gold opened up a 3-0 lead over the Fire with a three-run third inning before rain halted the game, forcing a postponement until the following morning.

SEU rallied back with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3. The score remained tied until the sev-enth inning, when the Eagles batted around with two outs. Af-ter the first two batters were retired, Chanley Burge launched a home run over the right-center field fence, giving ERAU a 4-3 lead. Two batters later, Espinosa doubled home Wood. Three batters later Zimmerman drew a bases-loaded walk, bringing the score to 6-3. Osteen was then hit by a pitch and Haleigh Lewis followed with a two-run double, extending the lead to 9-3. Samantha Smith drove in Osteen with the 10th run, fol-lowed by Lewis scoring on an error and Samantha Smith scor-ing on a wild pitch, capping the nine-run inning.

The Fire could only muster one run in the bottom of the in-ning, giving Embry-Riddle a 12-4 win that sent the Fire home.

That afternoon, Embry-Riddle faced St. Thomas, with the winner earning a spot in the championship. The magic that the Eagles found the day before ran out against the Bobcats, end-ing the inaugural season for ERAU.

STU took a 3-0 lead in the second and built up an 8-2 lead after three innings of play. Embry-Riddle couldn’t muster enough offense to threaten a comeback, falling by a score of 10-3.

Three Eagles Named to All-Conference Roster

In its first season of competition, the Embry-Riddle soft-ball team placed three players on the 2013 Sun Conference All-Conference roster. A trio of freshman, including Espinosa, Huey and Savannah Smith, all received the honor on at the conference tournament banquet in Clermont, Fla.

Espinosa, a freshman from Miami, Fla., was one of two catchers selected. She was second on the team with a .358 batting average and led the team with five home runs, 14 doubles and 41 RBIs.

Huey, a freshman from Tomball, Texas, earned one of the six infield slots. She finished second in the conference and 14th in the country in hits/game (1.54) and third in the con-ference and 26th in the NAIA in batting average (.444). Huey also led the Eagles with 15 stolen bases and 38 runs scored.

Smith, a freshman from Spring, Texas, was one of four at-large selections. She was fourth on the team with a .350 bat-ting average and second in on-base percentage (.439). Smith also tied for second among the Eagles with 10 doubles and recorded 15 walks, second-most on the team.

Also honored at the banquet was Eagle pitcher Melanie Lee, who was named to the Academic All-Conference team. Lee, a sophomore from Crystal River, Fla., finished the semes-ter with a 3.61 GPA as an Engineering major. She appeared in six games for the Blue and Gold, compiling an 0-3 record with one complete game. Lee also drew four walks and put down four sacrifice bunts in 16 plate appearances.

HistoryOn Dec. 17, 1925, 22 years after the historic flight of the Wright Flyer, barnstormer

John Paul Riddle and entrepreneur T. Higbee Embry founded the Embry-Riddle Com-pany at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio. The following spring the company opened the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University began with a simple plan to train airplane pilots in a thorough, efficient manner and to cash in on a booming post-World War I interest in flying. Today, Embry-Riddle leads the world in aviation and aerospace higher education.

After a period of decline in the 1930s, Embry-Riddle sprang to life again in Miami, Fla., as World War II erupted in Europe and the demand for aviators and mechanics surged. Allied nations sent more than 25,000 young men to Embry-Riddle’s Florida centers to become pilots and aviation technicians. During the Korean War the U.S. Air Force contracted with Embry-Riddle to train airmen in the fundamentals of airplane maintenance.

In the following decades, Embry-Riddle expanded its international outreach and strengthened its academic programs. In 1965, Embry-Riddle consolidated its flight training, ground school and technical training programs into one location.

AcademicsEmbry-Riddle is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Asso-

ciation of Colleges and Schools to award degrees at the associate, bachelor and master levels.

At many public universities, freshmen and sophomores are taught by graduate as-sistants, but not so at Embry-Riddle. Classes, which average 25 students, are taught by faculty who are accessible to students in class, during office hours and through university-wide voice mail and e-mail.

Dr. John P. Johnson Embry-Riddle University President

John P. Johnson was appointed as president of Embry-Riddle in 2005 after serving as the university’s provost and chief academic officer. Under his leader-ship, research has expanded and new degree programs have been created in me-chanical engineering, electrical engineering and global security/intelligence stud-ies, as well as Ph.D.s in aviation and engineering physics. The university is also pursuing a global strategy to take its aviation and aerospace expertise overseas.

Before joining Embry-Riddle, Johnson served as provost and vice president for academic affairs and professor of biology at Texas A&M University, Texarkana. In other positions he was dean of the College of Health Professions and professor of Physical Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina; dean of the College of Professional Studies and professor at Northern Kentucky; professor of Speech and Hearing Science and department chairman at Lamar; and clinic director and assistant professor at Bowling Green State.

Johnson has taught courses at all levels in the fields of biology and speech and hearing science. In addition, he has published extensively in his discipline and has been a tenured full professor at four universities. He has been successful in developing new degree programs, increasing enrollment, en-hancing scholarly productivity and improving the internal climate and collegiality between faculty and administration at several institutions.

Johnson earned a B.A. and an M.S. from Florida State University and a Ph.D. from Kent State Uni-versity. He completed post-doctoral programs of study in academic administration at Texas A&M Uni-versity in College Station and at the Budget and Control Board’s Executive Institute in Columbia, S.C.

Students can choose from eight housing styles ranging from suites to efficiency apart-ments to traditional residence hall designs. All campus student rooms have telephone service, Internet access and satellite TV connection. Lounges, study and meeting rooms, game rooms and other common areas are available to all.

The housing facilities are enhanced by four campus dining locations, a fitness center and recreational facilities.

Extracurricular ActivitiesThe Student Activities Office coordinates numerous special events, such as comedy

shows, concerts, plays and weekly movies, as well as on-campus clubs and organizations. Students can choose to get involved in more than 150 professional organizations, sports clubs, fraternities, sororities and special-interest clubs.

The university also gives students opportunities to work part time while pursuing a degree. The Student Employment Office helps place students in jobs on or off campus. Job opportunities are available regardless of financial need and allow students to gain self-confidence, important time-management skills and valuable employment references.

After GraduationInternships and co-operative education opportunities, available through the univer-

sity’s Career Services Office, enable students to gain valuable experience in their chosen field. In many cases, students have been offered full-time jobs as a result of an internship or co-op experience. The Career Services Office also has a placement program for gradu-ates of the university. Counselors are available to help refine resumes, hone interviewing skills and help explore job opportunities within a vast network of companies.

The Industry/Career Expo held each November has become the aviation industry’s hiring event of the year. The expo attracts hundreds of recruiters from top companies looking to hire the university’s graduates. Professionals with an Embry-Riddle degree en-joy a variety of career options. Graduates have gone on to train as astronauts, fly planes, manage airports, design mechanical systems and serve as bank administrators. Included in the ranks of the Embry-Riddle alumni are six astronauts, a former U.S. congressman and a former White House Fellow.

Daytona Beach is an ever-changing city of more than 61,000 resi-dents. Located on the “Fun Coast” of Florida, the principal city of Volu-sia County, it has become one of the premier destination spots in the Southeast Region. Daytona Beach boasts three major sports franchises in NASCAR, the LPGA and the USTA. The Daytona Inter-national Speedway is one of the most recognizable race-tracks in the world and features the Daytona 500, Coke Zero 400 and numerous other auto racing events. The LPGA and USTA Florida both claim Daytona Beach as their organizational headquarters.

The beaches of Daytona rank sixth for beach destina-tions in the United States. Every year, millions of vaca-tioners flock to the Atlantic Ocean and Daytona Beach to experience the sandy beaches in Volusia County. The hard packed sand allows motorized vehicles to drive right onto the beach.

Daytona Beach is located a short, 55-mile drive away from the Vacation Capital of the World: Orlando, Florida. Orlando is home to Walt Disney World, Sea World and Universal Studios, as well as the NBA’s Orlando Magic. Daytona Beach is also just 91 miles from Jacksonville, the 11th-largest city in the United States.

The average yearly temperature in Daytona Beach is 70.4º F (21.3º C), making for a warm and pleasant cli-mate in which to live. Winters are mild and summers are warm thanks to its location on the Atlantic Ocean and the Halifax River, an estuary which flows between the beach-side and the mainland.

John Phillips was named Embry-Riddle’s Director of Athletics in January 2014 after serving as the Eagles’ Associate Athletics Director for seven years.

Born and raised in Kensington, Maryland, Phillips came to Daytona Beach in 1989, enrolling as a student at Embry-Riddle. Phillips played baseball for the Eagles for three seasons, while completing both his undergraduate (B.S., 1990) and graduate degrees (M.S., 1992).

Phillips returned to the University as the program’s first-ever Director of Sports Marketing and Promotions in August 1997,

and was subsequently named Assistant Director of Athletics in 1998. Since 2007, he has served as the University’s Associate Director of Athletics, supervising the day-to-day operations of the athletic department, including facilities, game management, sports information, sports medicine and sports marketing for the Daytona Beach cam-pus.

During his tenure at Embry-Riddle, Phillips has served as the tournament director for nine NAIA national championships that Embry-Riddle has hosted, including five for golf and four national soccer tournaments. In 2008, the NAIA honored him with the Charles Morris Award as the NAIA’s National Athletic Administrator of the Year.

In 2010, Phillips was named to the Board of Directors for the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA), becoming just the second admin-istrator from an NAIA institution to be named to this board. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors for NACMA, he also currently serves as the chair of the NAIA-NACMA Advisory Board, a panel of NAIA administrators that provides leadership and professional development opportunities in sports marketing to other NAIA institutions.

Internally, Phillips has served the University in numerous other capacities during his 16-years on staff, including Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Reaccreditation Audit Team, ERAU’s Women’s Initiative Committee, ERAU’s Diversity and Inclusion Task Force and the Embry-Riddle Alumni Advisory Council.

Locally, Phillips currently serves as the Chair of the Daytona Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau’s Sports Advisory Committee. This committee is charged with provid-ing guidance and marketing expertise in attracting regional, national and international sporting events to the Daytona Beach community.

Under his direction, the Embry-Riddle sports marketing and promotions staff has earned 19 NACMA “Best of” awards, including gold medals for things such as “spon-sorship activation,” “best student promotion” and “best targeted group promotion.” He has been a featured speaker on topics related to sports marketing at the NAIA conven-tion on seven different occasions, at the CoSIDA Convention in 2011 and 2012, and at the NACMA Convention every year since 2008. He has presented on topics such as “Big Time Promotions on a Small-Time Budget,” Social Networking and the “Brand of You.”

The sports information staff at Embry-Riddle has also garnered national attention during his tenure, capturing over 50 CoSIDA awards for Excellence in Publications, and has been honored on seven occasions with the NAIA’s Gary Spitler Award for the best overall sports publications in the NAIA.

Phillips has also served as the voice of Embry-Riddle basketball for the last 15 sea-sons and has served in a similar capacity for the Eagles baseball team since 1999. In addition to his broadcast work for ERAU, he has worked as the public address an-nouncer for both the Daytona Cubs and DeLand High School football. In his current position with WNDB-1150 AM, he anchors WNDB’s motorsports coverage for events such as the Rolex 24, the Daytona 500 and the Coke Zero 400. In addition, he serves as the play-by-play announcer for WNDB’s coverage of local high school football and anchors their weekly Coaches Corner pre-game show. Phillips has also worked for radio stations WSBB (New Smyrna Beach), WNDA (DeLand) and WELE (Ormond Beach).

Phillips and his wife Ann, who serves as an assistant Attorney General for the State of Florida, are parents of Lauren, Zachary and Rachel.

John Mark Adkison, who is entering his 10th year at Embry-Riddle, is the Eagles’ Associate Director of Athletics. His respon-sibilities include managing the Department’s fundraising efforts, managing the merchandising and licensing program and over-seeing the Academic Enhancement and Hall of Fame programs. In addition, Adkison serves as a liaison for the Student Athlete Leadership Team and the Champions of Character program.

Prior to Embry-Riddle, Adkison spent time as the LPGA Se-nior Marketing Coordinator, as well as the Championship Events Coordinator, Marketing Coordinator, and a Sports Information

Intern all for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Adkison is also active in the local community. He was a volunteer at St. James Episcopal School in Ormond Beach as the middle school basketball coach and currently serves on the FUTURES Foundation Board and is the Chair of the Missions Committee at Christ Community Church. He has also served as the basketball coach at the Dudley Founa-tion Basketball Camp in Vernonia, Oregon, a camp specialized for children with type one diabetes.

Adkison earned his master’s degree in Sports Administration from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 2001 and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Taylor University in 1993. He and wife Candace reside in Daytona Beach with their daughter, Georgia Grace.

SONJA TAYLORExecutive Director Student-Athlete Support Services/Senior woman administrator

The Embry-Riddle Athletics Administration announced the appointment of Sonja Taylor to the position of Executive Direc-tor of Student-Athlete Support Services in January 2014. Taylor, a 30-year veteran of the University, was also designated the Se-nior Woman Administrator.

In her role with Athletics, Taylor is a member of the senior leadership team, focusing primarily on support services and programs for student-athletes, including academic excellence, personal and career development and overall well-being. She also provides sport supervision for several of ERAU’s female

athletics teams and coaches.Before joining the Athletics Department, Taylor served in a variety of roles within the

University’s Division of Student Affairs. She began her career at Embry-Riddle as ERAU’s Residence Life Coordinator in 1984 and two years later, she became the Director of Housing. During her tenure as the Director of Housing, she provided administrative lead-ership in the planning and construction of the Student Village in 1997, which increased the number of on-campus residents from 900 to 1,900.

In 2002, Taylor was named the Associate Dean of Students, providing oversight to Housing and Residence Life, Health Services, and Counseling and Orientation, while serv-

ing as the functional Director of Housing. Three years later, Taylor was named the Dean of Students, a position she held until she was named the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs in January of 2013.

As a leader on Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach campus, Taylor has served as the Chair for a number of committees, including Diversity and Inclusion, University Tobacco-Free Communication & Transition, the Embry-Riddle Annual Fund and Judicial Process Review, which resulted in the creation of the University’s Honor Code and Honor Board. Taylor has also served as Off-Site Committee Member for the Commission on Colleges’ Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and has been a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the Association of Student Conduct Administra-tors. Her successes at Embry-Riddle have led to her being asked to be the presenter at several conferences, including the Association of College and University Housing Officers Conference and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Taylor has been an avid supporter of sports in general and the Eagles’ Athletics pro-gram in particular. She has attended numerous games as a season ticket holder and her interaction with the Eagle coaches and student-athletes has resulted in her being asked to be an honorary coach at home contests, in addition to being a guest speaker at the 2012 ERAU Student-Athlete Convocation.

The ICI CenterThe ICI Center has been the home of Embry-Riddle

men’s basketball and volleyball since 1995. The ICI Cen-ter seats 1,968 spectators overall, including 642 perma-nent chair-back seats on the south sideline. The main arena features Grade I maple Aacer Channel floor and two 189-square-foot Daktronics LED scoreboards.

Embry-Riddle Soccer StadiumThe state-of-the-art Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium is

regarded as one of the premier soccer facilities at the NAIA level. The lighted field features a 33-by-15 foot Daktronics scoreboard with message center and 120-by-70 yard bermuda-grass playing surface and a 1,000 seat grandstand and press box.

Sliwa StadiumThe home of Embry-Riddle baseball has dimensions

of 330 feet down each line and 400 feet to straight-away

center. In the spring of 2006, a gated brick entrance was added along with a covered grandstand with seating for 615 spectators and a press box.

Crotty Tennis ComplexThe Ambassador E. William Crotty Tennis Center fea-

tures nine lighted tennis courts, three sets of bleachers for 50 spectators each and an electronic scoreboard that can show set scores for six matches simultaneously. In 2004, the complex earned national recognition as one of 15 fa-cilities claiming USTA Facility Awards.

Embry-Riddle Track & Field Complex The Embry-Riddle Track Complex, which was complet-

ed by the spring of 2006, has an eight-lane, 400-meter track with 14mm Mondo Super X track surface, a bi-direc-tional runways for the pole vault, long and triple jump and a high jump apron and a water pit for the steeplechase. Three throwing areas were added at the start of the 2012

season, including hammer, discus and shot put with land-ing areas.

In the months leading up to the 2012 London Olym-pics, the ERAU Track & Field Complex served as the training ground for several of the world’s elite athletes, including 2012 Olympic gold medalist in the triple jump, Christian Taylor and 4x100m relay gold medalist Tianna Madison.

Embry-Riddle Softball StadiumCompleted in 2011, the Embry-Riddle Softball Com-

plex features dimensions of 197 feet down the lines and 218 feet to straightaway center. The outfield is made up of Tifway 419 bermuda grass and the Daktronics score-board is prominently displayed beyond the outfield wall. The scoreboard is 20 feet wide and 14.5 feet tall and it features PanaView ®LED digits to display. The softball complex hosted it’s first intercollegiate softball contest in the spring of 2013.

Recognizing student-athletes who maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout the 2012-13 academic year

The Braddock Education Success Team (BEST) Program was incorporated into the Embry-Riddle Athletic Program during the 1999-00 academic year. The BEST Program is a branch of the Braddock Foundation, which was established by Robert & Lois Braddock. It is currently sponsored by their daughter and Spruce Creek Fly-in resident, Cherie Keemar, and was initiated by her late husband, Michael.

The BEST program offers tutoring and mentoring programs to assist student-ath-letes in managing their time between academics, athletics and social development. One of the fundamental components of the BEST Program is Study Hall, which is for student-athletes who are required to attend according to stipulations set by each respective team’s coaching staff. Study Hall is a place where tutors and mentors are available for student-athletes throughout the academic year. With its clearly defined criteria and rules of conduct, Study Hall strives to provide a structured environment

that will benefit student-athletes by improving study habits, honing focus and pro-viding one-on-one learning opportunities. It is not intended to be a substitute for regular class attendance and routine study, but is designed as an essential tool to help student-athletes achieve their academic objectives.

Dave Therneau serves as the Academic Enhancement Coordinator of the BEST Program. He and other BEST Program staff members oversee the daily operations of the Academic Advancement Center where all students, including athletes, can go and receive tutoring in many of the courses and subjects that are part of the curriculum at Embry-Riddle.

Embry-Riddle opened a new College of Arts & Sciences building in Fall 2013. It will house a 9,000 square foot facility dedicated to the University’s Academic Achievement Center, which includes the BEST Program.

In the NAIA, a dedication to leadership development is balanced with sports accomplishment. A trailblazer in providing equal opportunity for all student-athletes. An expectation of ethical behavior, fairness in competition, access to athletic scholarship, sportsmanship and leadership development. At the core of all of this — character.

The seed of the NAIA began in 1937 with the tip-off of a men’s basketball tournament that has become the longest running basketball tournament in the country, celebrating 75 years in 2012.

Out of the tournament grew the NAIA, an association of close to 300 member schools and more than 60,000 student-athletes.Since 1937, the NAIA has administered programs and championships in proper balance with the overall educational experience.

In 2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the character-building aspects of sport. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.

Most recently, the association opened the doors to the NAIA Eligibility Center, where prospective student-athletes are evaluated for academic and athletic eligibility. It delivers on a larger promise of integrity by leveling the playing field, guiding student-athlete success, and ensuring fair competition. Providing student-athletes a chance to connect with NAIA schools and coaches helps them make the best decision to prepare them for success in both college and athletics.

with sports both inside and outside the sports setting. In so doing, the organization looks to develop exemplary character and sportsmanship in NAIA competition.

Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five tenets: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant lead-ership and sportsmanship. This program educates and create awareness of the positive character-building traits afforded by sports and returns integrity to competition at the collegiate and youth levels while impacting all of society.

The Embry-Riddle Athletic Department has enthusiastically embraced the implementation of the NAIA Champions of Char-acter initiative. For years the department has sought to instill in student-athletes the very values addressed by the movement. Additionally, the Student-Athlete Leadership Team assists in evaluation and feedback on the overall student-athlete experience.

In 2012-13, Embry-Riddle student-athletes, coaches and staff contributed logged 2,285 hours in community service hours.

For the last three years, Embry-Riddle has partnered with the Food Brings Hope Initiative, bringing elementa-ry and middle school children on to campus for special programing, including facility tours, basketball games and pizza.

In 2012, Embry-Riddle women’s soccer hosted the sec-ond annual Habitat for Humanity Invitational. The teams in the two-day tournament take a one-day break from competition to volunteer at a local Habitat for Humanity project.

Members of Embry-Riddle’s Student-Athlete Leader-ship Team volunteered at the Children’s Home Society, helping to organize their Christmas toy donations.

At the beginning of the year, teams whose student-athletes have arrived on campus early for preseason workouts, take a few hours off practice to help new Embry-Riddle students move in to on-campus housing.

Embry-Riddle’s athletic programs are involved in local elmentary school reading programs.

In January 2013, ERAU Athletics partnered with the Embry-Riddle chapter of Phi Gamma Delta for a fun-draising run from Daytona Beach to West Palm Beach. Proceeds went to to a fund for former ERAU women’s soccer play Kate Schwikert who is currently battling cancer.

SPORTS MEDICINEThe Embry-Riddle Sports Medicine Department provides ERAU student-athletes

with the best medical care possible following an injury, to return the athlete back to school and competition as soon as possible in the safest manner. The areas of em-phasis for the Sports Medicine Department are injury prevention, injury evaluation, treatment, and injury/health education. We dedicate ourselves to providing a safe environment for our athletes to compete in.

Treatments, injury care, taping, practice, and game preparations are performed in the 1,000 square-foot athletic training room. Adjacent to this room is the 400 square-foot athletic training rehabilitation room. These rooms have a variety of equipment to provide the best care and rehabilitation possible for ERAU student-athletes.

strength & conditioningThe Jamie Fletcher Weight Room is located inside ERAU’s ICI Center. This 2,800

square-foot facility is home to some of the top equipment available. ERAU student-athletes participate in team strength programs year round, which

allow them to stay strong and healthy throughout the year and peak at the correct times. ERAU Athletes also participate in speed and agility sessions. These sessions help develop better explosiveness, balance, and speed.

Embry-Riddle University strength and conditioning is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of our student-athletes. These areas help develop a strong, healthy, and mentally tough student-athlete that will succeed in their endeavors.
