EAGLE MENThe 2014 Embry-Riddle mens cross country team

is poised to have one of the most successful seasons in program history, returning the majority of last years Sun Conference championship-winning squad. Head Coach Mike Rosolino is excited to see what this years group can accomplish in ERAUs final season as an NAIA member.

We return nine of our top 10 from last year, Ro-solino said. This is one of the deepest teams weve ever had here, and I really believe we could see a re-turn to being one of the top teams in the country. This team has the potential to be the best in the history of Embry-Riddle cross country.

This years team features 11 returners from last years squad, including six of the seven Embry-Riddle finishers from the NAIA National Championships and nine of the top 10 ERAU finishers from The Sun Con-ference Championships.

Senior Vincent Bett is expected to lead the way for the Blue and Gold this season. Bett, an All-Conference performer in 2012 and 2013, was the top Eagle fin-isher in seven of the eight races he competed in and was the top ERAU finisher at the NAIA National Cham-pionships (Nov. 23). He clocked a 24:29.71 at the Mountain Dew Invitational last season (Sept. 14), mak-ing him the third-fastest Eagle runner in school history.

Vincent did a great job for us last year after we lost Evans Kirwa, Rosolino remarked. I expect him to continue to be our leader both on and off the course this season.

Alec Hernandez will again be looked to as a top-three runner this year after consistently finishing as one of the top three Eagles throughout the 2013 sea-son. Hernandez, a senior, established himself as the seventh-fastest runner in ERAU history at the 2013 Sun Conference Championships (Nov. 9) with a time of 25:08.08.

Also expected to be a top-three runner is Paul McKenna. McKenna earned All-Conference honors in 2013 and consistently finished amongst the top three on the Eagles squad. McKenna became the sixth-fast-est runner in Blue and Gold history with a 25:01.65 at the Sand Shark Invitational last year (Oct. 26).

Rosolino expects to see senior Jacob Dordick, juniors Ryan Larson and Jamin Mays and sophomore Matt Graves to be battling each other to earn the dis-tinction of being top-five runners, which should push all four of them to get better all season long.

Dordick finished with six top-five ERAU finishes last year, including being the third Eagle to cross the line at the Asics Embry-Riddle Classic (Sept. 21). He was also the fifth Eagle to finish at the NAIA National Championships (Nov. 23) with a time of 27:23.86.

Larson recorded seven top-six finishes on the team last season, highlighted by his performance at the Asics Embry-Riddle Classic (Sept. 21) where he was the fifth and final scoring runner for the Blue and Gold.

Mays ran in eight meets for the Eagles in 2013, finishing seventh overall and fourth on the team at the Asics Embry-Riddle Classic (Sept. 21). Mays broke the 26-minute mark for the first time in his career with a 25:58.30 at the Sand Shark Invitational (Oct. 26), moving him into 15th place on the all-time fastest run-ners list in program history. Graves competed in seven meets last year, highlighted by his 24th-place finish, fourth on the team, at the South Florida Invitational (Sept. 6).

Also returning for the Eagles are seniors Dalton LHeureux and Jason Riggs, juniors Palmer Lintz and Paul Meesala, and sophomore Andrew Carosi, while the newcomers include freshmen Andrew Carpenter, James Fell, Adam Lawrence, DeVontae Persha and Keneth J Pineiro-Collazo.

EAGLE WOMENThe Embry-Riddle womens cross country team

comes in to 2014 looking to reclaim The Sun Confer-ence championship, a title that the Eagles lost last year for the first time in eight years.

Weve improved from last year overall, Rosolino said. We return six of our top eight, but losing Ellie Staker is big for us. Our team is composed almost en-tirely of seniors and freshmen, which is an odd situa-tion. Obviously we expect the seniors to be leaders on and off the course, but the success of this years team will depend heavily on what the freshmen class does.

This years squad features seven returners, led by senior Aleiyah Ross, junior Martina Tafoya and sopho-more Marina LeVine.

Ross was a top-three finisher for the Eagles in the teams final four meets and was one of three team members to qualify individually for the NAIA National Championships. Her seventh-place time of 19:16.84 at The Sun Conference Championships (Nov. 9) made her the 14th-fastest runner in program history.

Tafoya competed in seven meets for the Eagles, finishing among the top three on the team in four rac-

es. She also qualified for the NAIA National Champion-ships, finishing just 1.3 seconds ahead of Ross at the national meet. Tafoya become the 13th-fastest runner in school history with a time of 19:14.12 at the Sand Shark Invitational (Oct. 26).

LeVine had an outstanding freshman campaign, earning top-five team finishes in six meets. She was the third Eagle to finish at the South Florida Invitation-al, where her time of 19:17.97 established her as the 15th-fastest Eagle in school history.

Along with Ross, the rest of the senior class will be asked to shoulder a lot of the leadership this season. Lauren Eschbach, Brittany King, Rebecca Love and Jaena Smith will all be asked to contribute as potential top-five runners as well.

Eschbach competed in five races last year, finish-ing as the fourth ERAU runner at the Asics Embry-Rid-dle Classic in 20:57.22 (Sept. 21).

King raced four times for ERAU, clocking a season best of 21:32.29 at The Sun Conference Champion-ships.

Love was twice the second-finishing Eagle, includ-ing a blistering time of 19:06.28 at the season-opening South Florida Invitational (Sept. 6), a time that places her as the 10th-fastest runner in program history.

Smith competed in five meets last year, finishing as the sixth Eagle to cross the line at the conference meet (Nov. 9) in 20:31.06.

Newcomers to the squad this year consist of red-shirt freshman and track All-American Maite Moscoso and six true freshmen, including Eliza Gazda, Alexan-dria Meneses, Annette Morrison, Alex Orr, Brianna Paczynski and Audrey Parios.

Over the last 12 cross country seasons, Mike Rosoli-nos harriers have dominated Sun Conference competition. The mens team has nine league titles to its credit, while the womens team topped the conference standings in for seven consecutive seasons from 2006-12. The Eagles run began in 2005 when the Embry-Riddle men captured the programs first league and NAIA Regional titles and made their first team appearance at the NAIA National Cham-pionship. A year later, Rosolinos harriers repeated that performance and were joined by the ERAU women who claimed their first regional and conference crowns.

Rosolino has been named The Sun Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year 15 times in his Embry-Riddle career - eight times for the men and seven on the womens side and the NAIA Region XIV Coach of the Year four times. He picked up his latest league coaching accolade in 2013 after leading the men to The Sun Conference crown and a 16th-place finish at the NAIA National Champion-ships. Rosolino also saw Ellie Staker become to first wom-ens cross country runner in program history to earn NAIA All-America accolades in 2013.

The men took fifth-place overall at the NAIA National Championship in 2009, with three runners earning All-America honors for the first time in program history, while the women finished 16th that same season. Rosolino coached Evans Kirwa to his second All-America honor in 2011, the first Eagle runner to accomplish the feat.

In 12 years with the Eagle cross country programs, Rosolino has coached 99 All-Conference performers (50 men and 49 women).

In 2005, Rosolino was tasked with launching the track and field program at Embry-Riddle. His penchant for suc-cess is evident in track and field as well as he has led the men to seven conference championships and the women to five league titles in the last nine seasons.

    Rosolino has coached numerous conference cham-pions, 146 NAIA All-Americans and six NAIA National Champions who have won 15 individual national champi-onships: Beth McCubbin (1000m: 2008, 2009), Crystal Bardge (100m hurdles: 2011, 2012; 60m hurdles: 2011), Sam Vazquez (1000m: 2011), Nicole Bonk (3000m Race Walk: 2012, 2013; 5000m Race Walk: 2012), Reta Wood-ard (Weight Throw: 2012, 2014; Hammer Throw: 2013, 2014) and Mike Edwards (High Jump: Indoor 2013, Out-door 2013).

Along with training top athletes, Rosolino sets the high-est standards for his athletes in the classroom. In the past 12 seasons, he has coached 70 NAIA Scholar-Athletes and his teams have also consistently earned NAIA Scholar Team recognition, including four in 2012-13.

Rosolino came to Embry-Riddle from Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., where he spent two years on the coaching staff for the Blue Hose. He began his stint at Pres-byterian as an assistant coach and was elevated to the head job after just six months. Despite the brevity of his tenure with the program, Rosolino guided the Blue Hose to their

best finishes in school history, producing two South Atlan-tic Conference Runners of the Year and a Freshman of the Year in the process.

Prior to earning his position within the Presbyterian athletic department, Rosolino spent four academic years (1997-01) as the Director of Residence Life in Clinton. He also served as Resident Director for one year (1996-97) while attending graduate school.

A former standout runner for Rhodes College in Mem-phis, Tenn., Rosolino helped the Lynx to three Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) titles from 1993-95. In his final season, he assumed the role of team cap-tain and finished 11th overall at the SCAC Championship meet. Rosolino also ran two seasons for the Rhodes track team, competing in the middle to long distance races. In 1995, he finished fifth at the SCAC Championships in the steeplechase.

An Academic All-American for Rhodes in 1994 and 1995, Rosolino was a National Merit finalist and earned distinction as a National Science Scholar.

Rosolino earned his bachelors degree in Mathematics from Rhodes in 1996. He went on to receive his Master of Education degree from the University of South Carolina in 1998 with an emphasis on student personnel services. Rosolino also holds a Level II certification from USA Track and Field. He earned a second Masters degree in Pastoral Studies from Loyola College in New Orleans in 2009.

Rosolino and his wife Carrie have been married for 17 years and reside in Port Orange with daughter Lynnlee and son Tanner.

Peter Hopfe came to the Embry-Riddle athletic pro-gram in January 2005 from Flagler-Palm Coast High School where he worked with both the cross country and track programs as either the head or assistant coach for 10 years.

In 2001 and 2002, he led the FPC boys cross country teams to state titles. He led both the boys track and girls cross country teams to runner-up finishes at the Florida State meets in the 2001 and 2003, respectively, and also guided the FPC girls to numerous top-10 finishes.

A two-time Florida State Coach of the Year, Hopfe has coached individual track and cross country state champi-ons, including Sam Vazquez who holds the state of Florida high school record at 1600m, was selected as Track and Field magazines 1600-meter Runner of the Year in 2003 and competed in the 2012 London Olympics for Puerto Rico, running the 1500m. Hopfe graduated from Bentley College in 1980 with a bachelors degree in Management. While at Bentley, he earned four letters as a cross country and track runner for the Falcons.

Although he competed at the collegiate level, Hopfes career as a runner blossomed after college as he focused on 5K road races and marathons at the elite level. Hopfes best time at 5K was 14:54. In 1987, he ran a personal best 2:28 at the Boston Peace Marathon, which earned him the opportunity to compete for the United States at the 1988 Moscow Marathon.

Hopfe is also active in the local running community as a member of the Daytona Beach Track Club and the Ancient City Road Runners in St. Augustine.

In addition to his coaching resume, Hopfe owned and operated a restaurant and multiple real estate companies. Hopfe and his wife Cynthia have two children and one grandchild.
