    magical season as they earn Dr. Cavils 2014 Major Division and Mid-Major Division championships.There were stellar players that brought fans to their feet all season long. Dr. Cavils Major Division All-

    American teams were led by Offensive Players of the Year, Quarterback, Greg McGee, of Howard andDefensive of Players of the Year, Linebacker, Jerome Howard of Prairie View A&M. The Mid-Major

    Division was led by Offensive Players of the Year, Running back, Jarvis Small of Albany State andDefensive of Players of the Year, Defensive Lineman, Duvontae Covington of Winston-Salem State.

    The Ben L. Cavil, Sr. Big Ben HBCU Football Award

    The Ben L. Cavil, Sr. Big Ben HBCU Football Award, inaugural announced will be in 2015 by 3C

    Communications of THG Agency, LLC. It recognizes the top player in HBCU football who also exhibitsthe enduring characteristics that defined Ben L. Cavil, Sr., the Cavil family legacy and the 3C Foundation:

    determination, diligence, integrity, performance, familial, teamwork, fraternal (Alpha Phi AlphaFraternity), and community; to persist, at a time that was difficult and often unjust for African Americans,and flourish at the beginning of the HBCU Diaspora and Cultural Identity begins to its inculcation in the

    community based on The tradition of intercollegiate athletics at historically Black colleges anduniversities (HBCUs) is filled with a rich legacy of success including the presence of legendary coaches,outstanding student athletes, and a unique connection to African American cultural heritage and

    empowerment consisting of three multi-level major paradigms: racial pride, cultural expression, and blackmasculinity that have created this cultural identity that continues to last to this very day.

    In addition, the nominee must meet the following criteria; must have been born in Texas or played at aTexas high school, played football at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) NCAA DivisionI FCS, NCAA Division II, NAIA Division I, or Unaffiliated HBCU four year college.

    Ben L. Cavil, Sr. Big Ben

    Ben L. Cavil, Sr. was born May 29, 1905, in the Danville community approximately three milesnorthwest of Willis, (Montgomery County) Texas. At the age of three, his mother passed away and his

    aunt Nancy Owens, affectionately called Mama Nannie stepped in and assisted in the raising of the

    children. These children were nurtured in Old Danville and Ben attended Willis High School and thenmoved to Beaumont, Texas to enroll in Charlton-Pollard High School.

    Ben graduated in 1925 and enrolled in Wiley College in the fall of that year. Ben was a standout football

    player in college and became known as Big Ben. During his stint at Wiley College from 1925-1929,Big Ben was one of the gridiron 11 announced as a 1927 Second Team Pittsburgh Courier (HBCU) All-American and a 1928 First Team Pittsburgh Courier (HBCU) All-American at the fullback position as

    announced by the Pittsburg Courier African American newspaper. Only 11 players were selected formany years due to the fact most players played both offense and defense.

    Mr. Ben Cavil was a member of the Wildcat squad that played in the inaugural State Fair Classic in 1925held in Dallas, Texas for the Negro Day at the State Fair of Texas, featuring Lan gston (Oklahoma) and

    Wiley (Texas). The game resulted in a 00 tie before a crowd of 5,000. Under the guidance of legendarycoach Fred Pop Long, Big Ben Cavil led the Wildcat gridironers to the Southwestern AthleticConference (SWAC) for three consecutive years from 1927-1929 and a Co-Black College NationalChampionship in 1928 (8-0-1), sharing the title with Bluefield State (8-0-1) as announced by the PittsburgCourier. This was during a time Wiley College dominated the HBCU football landscape, particularly the

    Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) winning five conference football championships during thedecade of the 1920s, (1921, 1923, 1927, 1928, and 1929).

    HBCU MAJOR DIVISION COACH OF THE YEAR

    Broderick Fobbs, Grambling State University TigersCoach Broderick Fobbs led the Tigers to a 7-2 SWAC record and 7-5 overall mark as

    well as a final ranking of No. 6 in Dr. Cavils HBCU Major Division Football Final Top

    10. The Tigers were ranked a high as No. 2 in Week 13. Coach Fobbs resurrected the G-

    Men after an unprecedented 2013 campaign as the Tigers in 20014 were in the runningfor a divisional title going into the final weekend of the regular season. Coach Fobbs

    coach his Tigers to a win over Alcorn State Braves (issuing the Braves their first SWACloss this season).

    HBCU MID-MAJOR DIVISION COACH OF THE YEAR

    Dwone Sanders, Langston University Lions

    Coach Dwone Sanders led the Lions to a No. 4 ranking in Dr. Cavils HBCU Mid-MajorDivision Football Final Top 10 Poll Rankings, earning a CSFL Championship and a

    NAIA Division I Playoff bid (7-4, 5-0). The Lions are undefeated at home over the last

    three seasons and were ranked No. 16 nationally in theNAIA Football Coaches Top 25Poll for the final poll at the end of the regular season, (Nov. 16).

    HBCU MAJOR DIVISION NEWCOMER COACH OF THE YEAR

    Lee Hull, Morgan State University BearsCoach Lee Hullled the Bears to a five-way tie for the MEAC Championship with 6-2

    conference record and 7-6 overall mark in the 2014 campaign. The Bears earn the

    MEAC automatic bid the FCS playoffs and final season poll ranking of No. 7 in Dr.Cavils HBCU Major Division Football Final Top 10. Coach Hull as resurrected the

    Bears programs in his first year with impressive win over the second ranked South

    Carolina State Bulldogs, 24-21 and eighth ranked North Carolina Central Eagles, 21-20.

    HBCU MID-MAJOR DIVISION NEWCOMER COACH OF THE YEAR

    Mark James, Virginia Union University PanthersCoach Mark James led the Panthers to a No. 6 ranking in Dr. Cavils HBCU Mid-Major Division

    Football Final Top 10 Poll Rankings with a (7-3) overall record and (5-2) in conference. Coach

    James has brought the excitement back the Panther program and the team in the running for adivisional title going into the final weekend of the regular season.

    Coach Jay Hopson led the Braves to an (10-3, 7-2) record,No. 1 ranking in Dr. CavilsHBCU Major Division Football Final Top 10 Poll Ranking, finish with two top five wins

    (2-0), wins over Southern Jaguars (twice) (No. 4; Major Division) as well as (4-1) record

    against the top 10, including wins over the Alabama State Hornets (No. 9; Major

    Division) and the Prairie View A&M Panthers (No. 10; Major Division). The Bravesfinished first in the conference in scoring offense, 45.2; scoring defense, 20.8; total

    offense, 502.7; total defense, 355.1; rushing offense, 287.4 and led HBCU Major

    Division programs in three of the five listed categories.

    PROGRAM OF THE YEAR

    Virginia State University TrojansCoach Latrell Scott led to the Trojans to win against all HBCU football competition, 9-0,

    (including win over Kentucky State of the SIAC) and a win in the CIAA ChampionshipGame over the Winston-Salem State Rams, snapping three-time defending Mid-MajorDivision Champion. The Trojans earned a first round NCAA Division II playoff win

    over LIU Post. The Trojans finish with one top five wins (1-0), win over Winston-Salem

    State Rams (No. 2; Mid-Major Division) as well as (2-0) record against the top 10, withwins over the Virginia Union Panthers (No. 6; Mid-Major Division) and the Fayetteville

    State Broncos (No. 10; Mid-Major Division).
