DHT’s Student Art and Photography Competition is a visual arts competition for elementary, middle and high school students in Miami-Dade County. The competition seeks to inspire young Miami-Dade County artists to become better acquainted with the rich architectural, cultural and environmental history of the county. MARCH History Comes to Life - 4th Annual “Vintage Day” Celebration at Everglades National Park! Saturday, March 1, 10:00 a.m.—3:00 p.m. Everglades National Park Royal Palm Visitor Center

Visitors of all ages will have the opportunity to interact with costumed interpreters representing the people who have left a legacy on the land known as The Everglades. There will also be special tours and presentations by local authors and historians.

Park guests can leave their cars at the Coe Visitor Center and ride the Homestead Trolley back in time to Royal Palm., where they will meet costumed interpreters portraying gladesmen, plume hunters, early park wardens, botanists, gator hunters, conservationists, and political activists.

Special guided tours of the old “Royal Palms State Park,” a historical area owned and protected by the Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs in the first half of the 20th century, led by Civilian Conservation Corpsman from the 1930s will be available. There will also be guided walks through a hammock by an early botanical artist, as well as a tour of the Mike missile base led by a cold war era soldier.

The Cape Florida Lighthouse will be open for you to climb its challenging steps, and the Keeper’s House will also be open with its rustic antique furnishings on display.

Historical re-enactors will be recreating the 1858 Pre-Civil War time period, featuring a lighthouse keeper and Cape Florida family life. There will be demonstrations of candle-making and a musician will be playing a dulcimer. A ship salvager and hunter/trapper will also be there. Local historian Joan Gill

Blank will be present to answer questions and to offer for sale her book, “Key Biscayne: A History of Miami’s Tropical Island and the Cape Florida Lighthouse,” available for purchase. Members of Dade Heritage Trust will also be on hand to explain the 1996 restoration of the Cape Florida Lighthouse that they co-sponsored with the Florida Park Service. They will also be selling commemorative bricks for the lighthouse entrance walkway.

While you’re in the park make sure to stop in at one of the Park’s two restaurants. Fresh seafood and Cuban cuisine are always favorites at the Boaters Grill as you dine and view the yachts just yards away in No Name Harbor. Or enjoy the ocean breezes with some fresh fish or a burger on the deck of the Lighthouse Café. You may enjoy wine and beer at both park restaurants.

Remember, you can rent a bicycle in the park and enjoy 1.5 miles of bike trails; you can bring your roller skates and explore the park; you can rent a kayak, swim or just sunbathe on 1.5 miles of beach. The oolitic limestone building was constructed in 1939 as the Coral Gables Fire and Police Station and featured busts carved by WPA artists.
