Fans may have just one response to hearing who’s coming to Crosslake Winterfest: “Dy-no-mite!”

Yes, Jimmy J.J. Walker will perform Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at Pine Peaks Events Center amidst this year’s Winterfest celebration.

Perhaps best known for his role in “Good Times,” Walker was a stand-up come-dian before landing the spot on the show. Walker was working for a radio station before joining The Last Poets as an opening act, one of his first stand-up acts.

In 1972 he quit his day job and became a full-time come-dian. He was later named Time Magazine’s Comedian of the Decade.

His role in “Good Times” eventually led to movie roles. Walker was boxer Bootney Farnsworth in “Let’s Do It Again,” and had roles in “Airplane!” and “Airport ’79.”

Recently, he’s made appearances on “The George Lopez Show,” “Everybody Hates Chris” with Chris Rock and “Scrubs.” Comedy remains Walker’s first love, and he tours the nation 35-45 weeks a year performing live and appearing on game shows and late night television.

Showtimes are 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. Tickets are $35, and an Italian buffet catered by Maucieri’s is $12. A full bar will be available. Tickets are sold in advance only. For tickets, call 218-692-7829. Visit www.pinepeakseventcenter.com for more information.

This year soup eaters will have extra incentive to vote for their favorite Soup Fest soups: a prize package from Manhattan’s and Whitefish Properties.

Every year votes are tallied for the cov-eted Golden Ladle during Crosslake’s Soup Fest, a part of the Winterfest activities. Voters pick their favorite soup in two categories: culinary and amateur. Any Soup Fest site with a professional chef is in the culinary category, while other stores and participants fall under the amateur category.

When participants cast their ballots this year, they will automatically be entered to win an overnight stay at Whitefish Properties and a $50 gift certificate to Manhattan’s Restaurant. Participants must fill out the form with their contact information, and only one ballot is allowed per person.

Currently the Army Corps of Engineers and the Riverside Inn hold the coveted Golden Ladle and will compete for the award again this year against nearly 20 local busi-nesses and restaurants. Soup will be served at numerous locations throughout Crosslake beginning at noon on Feb. 1.
