Location Located in the northeast quadrant of the Houston

metropolitan area, just 21 miles from downtown Houston on Highway 59, the Lake Houston Area includes Atascocita, Fall Creek, Humble, Kingwood, Summerwood and portions of east Montgomery County, all of which are currently experiencing ro-bust population and economic growth.

Encompassing nearly 100 square miles of land in northeast Harris County, the area is largely for-ested. Due to its natural beauty, the recreation of Lake Houston and the San Jacinto River, the prox-imity of Bush Intercontinental Airport and the Port of Houston and the quality of its many subdivisions, the area has proven to be a strong attraction to newcomers. With developments like Generation Park and Grand Texas Theme Park coming to frui-tion the Lake Houston Area will continue to prosper for years to come.

Access Eleven lanes of Highway 59 flow from downtown

Houston, including one HOV lane for multipassen-ger vehicles. The Sam Houston Tollway Northeast allows motorists to drive 13 miles from US 59 near George Bush Intercontinental Airport to just past US 90. It is seven miles to Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houstons primary airport. Rail service runs through the Lake Houston Area, linking the region of the Port of Houston to Galveston. As construc-tion of the Grand Parkway continues, the Lake Houston Area will enjoy more connectivity to Hous-tons major thoroughfares and added mobility for our growing communities.

  • Its name came not from Humble Oil Com-pany, as newcomers to the area often believe, but from a vagabond fisherman by the name of P.S. Pleasant Humble who wandered into the area in the late 1850s and settled along the banks of the San Jacinto River with his wife and family. Humble Oil Company got its name from the town near its most famous discovery, not the other way around.Uncle Plez, as Humble was called, oper-

ated a ferry on the San Jacinto River near the present crossing of Highway 59. After a flood, Humble moved his family away from the river, settling near what was later known as Uncle Booge Isaacks place. He opened the first post oce, informing surrounding towns to deliver the mail to Humble. Hence, the town was named after him.Today the city limits of Humble encom-

passes only ten miles of land compared to the surrounding area that has taken its name-sake. These surrounding communities in-

clude Kingwood, Atascocita, Summerwood, Eagle Springs and Fall Creek. Kingwood was developed by Friend-

swood Development Company, the pioneer in the design and implementation of master-planning, to develop a new town in coop-eration with nature on the 14,000 acres clos-est to Houston. On December 28, 1967, Friendswood

Development Company purchased 50,000 acres of land from the Foster Lumber Com-pany. This land, located on Highway 59, is about 25 miles northeast of downtown Houston. At that time, Kingwood was one of only two master-planned communities in the Houston region. The other community, also developed by Friendswood Development Company, is Clear Lake City, the home of NASA-Johnson Space Center. In 1970 and 1971 the first five families moved

into Trailwood, the first of 21 villages that now make up the master-planned community of

Kingwood, The Livable Forest. The founders of Kingwood, in all their wisdom, realized that for Kingwood to be successful they needed to be a part of the surrounding community. Friend-swood Development Company discussed whether they should form their own chamber or help create a regional chamber and be a partner in regional growth and develop-ment. Friendswood Development Co. joined the Humble Chamber and the Humble Area Chamber was born. Start-up businesses in Kingwood joined the Humble Area Chamber and the regional partnership has continued for more than thirty years. As the area continued to grow, new com-

munities such as Atascocita, Fall Creek and Summerwood emerged and have joined the partnership, creating one of the most recognized regions and chambers in Texas. Due to this dynamic growth, the Chamber Board of Directors recognized the need to re-name the Chamber in order to better re-flect the region the Chamber serves. In 2010, the Chamber began a new era as The Lake Houston Area Chamber. Staying true to the organizations roots, Est. Humble, Tx 1923 became the tagline.

As early as 1690, Spanish explorer Alonzo DeLeon estab-lished an east-west trail for military use that became known as the Atascosito Road. It took its name from the Spanish outpost now known as Liberty, Texas. In 1757, the Spanish built a fort and established the Atascosito Settlement on this road to prevent the French from trading with the Indians. It became so widely used that by 1820 it had become the most traveled road in Texas, connecting San Antonio, San Felipe and Atascosito. Today, known as FM 1960, it serves as the most direct east-west route in the region. The area now known as Atascocita encompasses more than 15 subdivisions and has become the one of the fastest growing residen-tial communities in the nation. Most of the individual subdivisions in Atascocita feature their

own parks, swimming pools, tennis courts and easy access to rec-reational facilities. Additionally, area residents can enjoy two rec-reational facilities. Located on more than 120 acres, the Lindsay Lyons Park/Sports Center features a playground and barbecue pavilion, in addition to numerous athletic fields and facilities for soccer, baseball, football and girls softball. Humble Independent School District serves the Atascocita area and rates as one of the best academic districts in the Houston region. Lone Star College District also serves the area with the Atascocita Center, which opened in August 2011.Bordering Atascocita on the east, Lake Houston plays a vital role

in the areas recreational oerings. Formed by the damming of the San Jacinto River, the lake oers excellent opportunities for swim-ming, fishing, boating and skiing. With access from numerous public boat ramps, fishing enthusiasts are drawn to more than a dozen vari-eties of fish found in the lake. Boat enthusiasts find that the lake has sucient depth to accommodate power boats, ski boats, bass boats and jet skis. At the other end of the spectrum, human-powered, shallow-draft vessels such as canoes and kayaks can navigate the breathtaking scenery and native wildlife of the lake and its sources such as the San Jacinto River and Spring Creek.

    kingwood

Kingwood is a master-planned community located just 20 miles north of downtown Houston and three miles north of Humble. More than 61,000 residents make their home in the Livable Forest. Each village of Kingwood is unique with its own amenities such as pools and trails for biking and jogging. The villages are all connected by greenbelts and parks that create a serene environment a refreshing escape from the rapid pace of city life.

Many professional people have traded their commutes into Hous-ton for oce space in one of the numerous professional buildings. What better way to live, than to work and play within a short distance of home. The Humble Independent School District serves the King-wood area and rates as one of the best academic districts in the Houston region. Lone Star College District serves the area with our own Kingwood Campus.

In Kingwood, Friendswood Development Company has carefully integrated what nature has provided in a picturesque site canopied by more than 20 species of shade trees, sprinkled with wildflowers, graced by families of deer and filled with native birds, ducks and fish. This most exceptional setting of more than 14,000 acres has been crafted over a span of 30 years. Adding to natures bounty, Friend-swood has added over 75 miles of greenbelts for bicycling, walking or jogging, neighborhood playgrounds with pools and grand-scale community parks that provide ball fields, soccer fields and boating access to Lake Houston. For horse lovers, Kingwood has a boarding stable and riding area. Two private-member clubs provide five out-standing 18-hole golf courses, 27 tennis courts, fine dining and meet-ing facilities. Unlighted tennis courts are provided at both Kingwood and Kingwood Park High School. They are open to the public when not being used by students.

    Humble ISDwww.humbleisd.net | 281-641-8200

Humble Independent School District is a popular choice for families due to its reputation for outstanding schools. Humble ISD educates 38,000 students from the communities of Atascocita, Eagle Springs, Fall Creek, Humble, Kingwood, Summerwood and more.

Humble ISD operates six high schools: Atascocita High, Humble High, Kingwood High, Kingwood Park High, Summer Creek High and Quest Early College High Schools. The district operates eight middle schools: Atascocita Middle, Creekwood Middle, Humble Middle, King-wood Middle, Riverwood Middle, Ross Sterling Middle, Timberwood Middle and Woodcreek Middle Schools. Humble ISD operates 27 el-ementary schools.

In the past decade, Humble ISDs enrollment has grown by more than 11,000 children. New schools and renovations are part of a vigorous building program to keep pace with growth and update older campuses.

Humble ISD is award-winning. The district was among five school districts in Texas selected as a 2013 Finalist in the Large District Cat-egory for the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards Program, a pro-gram that spotlights best practices and celebrates the passion and creativity of Texas educators. Superintendent Dr. Guy Sconzo was also named the Region 4 Superintendent of the Year and one of five state finalists for his leadership and dedication to student achieve-ment. Humble ISD is a Texas Education Agency Recognized school district and a Superior Achievement district according to the Finan-cial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST). Thanks to high student achievement and very low spending, the State Comptrollers Finan-cial Allotment Study of Texas (FAST) rated Humble ISD 4.5 Stars out of a possible 5. The Humble ISD Board of Trustees in 2010 was named one of only five Honor Boards in Texas. There are more than 1,000 school districts in the state.

Known for academic rigor, Humble ISD was one of fewer than 400 school districts in the nation on the College Boards Advanced Place-ment (AP) Achievement List. Humble ISDs SAT and ACT scores ex-ceed state averages. Humble ISD oers an International Baccalaure-ate program, Early College High School program and a Career and Technology Education Center.

The Humble ISD Education Foundation, a non-profit organization, has awarded more than $5.7 million since 2000 to support projects that enhance education and is now one of only 12 district foundations in the state to raise more than $1 million a year.

LSC-Kingwoods Early College High School (ECHS) program con-tinues to grow. The first program began in 2009 with 59 Splendora ISD 9th grade students. Out of 46 who persevered through the 12th grade, 30 students earned associates degrees within days of gradu-ating from high school. The second ECHS program began a year later with Humble ISDs Quest ECHS. Seventy-eight 9th grade students are on track to graduate in May with an associates degree as are the second cohort of Splendora ECHS students.

A third ECHS program was launched fall 2013 with an enrollment of 60 New Caney ISD students.

LSC-Kingwood also opened a Mens Center. The Center facilitates comprehensive support services, mentoring and educational pro-grams to increase male academic achievement, campus involvement and enrollment. Located in the Student Conference Center, the pro-gram provides monthly lectures, seminars and mentoring opportuni-ties for the colleges male population.

LSC-Kingwood is also scheduled to open a Polysomnography pro-gram in the fall 2014. The new program will prepare competent entry-level polysomnographic technologists in the knowledge and skills needed to assist patients who are diagnosed with sleep disorders.

University of Houtson - Downtown has created a joint admission partmership with Lone Star College to help students make the tran-sition to a four-year university. Joint admission means that students are admitted to both institutions while attending one and/or the other. LSC-Kingwood also oers Continuing Education (CE) classes. The CE program is geared toward enriching the lives of community members by providing extraordinary learning opportunities. Students can register for certificate programs; certifications; short-term, intensive courses to improve their workforce skills; learn a foreign language; or gain compe-tency in an area for job advancement or self-improvement.

More than a building, the Nathaniel Center is a gift and a blessing back to the King-wood community from Paul and Dr. Vicki Sarvadi. Paul Sar-vadi is one of the founders of Insperity. With the fruits of that success, the Sarvadis formed The Nathaniel Foundation with the mission of building a better

community by promoting the arts, education, business and family. The Nathaniel Center is one of the many projects that the Nathaniel Foun-dation has created. The Center is available to the public to rent for the celebrations of

life: weddings, birthdays, graduations, and life memorials. It fosters education and strong business by hosting seminars, conferences, and training sessions. It fosters an appreciation for the arts by bringing world class perfor-

mances into the heart of Kingwood. The theatre, created by design-ers of Broadway sound stages, features performance groups such as Opera Leggera and Curtain Call Cafe, which are partially underwritten by the Nathaniel Foundation. Other local performing groups such as Kingwood Pops and Centre Stage call The Nathaniel Center home as well. The mission and focus of the Nathaniel Center can be encap-sulated in the words of St. Paul: Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatso-ever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
