Cead Mile Failte to You Allto the Ninth Annual Cape Cod Saint Patrick’s Parade

It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome you all on behalf of the Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade Committee to the 9th Annual Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade. The Committee voted this year to alter the parade route. The Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade will begin at Bass River Sports World in South Yarmouth and travel west on Route 28, ending at the Town ‘N Country Motel located in West Yarmouth. There has been much speculation as to why the route changed but quite simply we voted to move the route along a path that offers more amenities to parade attendees. We are very sensitive to the people and busi-ness in Dennis that have supported this parade from it’s very beginning. Simply put, this parade would not have been possible without their efforts. The success of this parade depends greatly on people traveling to this event from off Cape. By having the parade march past hotels, restaurants and other establishments that are open during this time of year, parade attendees can take advantage of the warmth, the food and services while standing on the parade route. This Committee works very hard to improve every year while forming a foundation which will support this parade well into the future. We invite many youth groups to take part in this parade because it will be theirs to run in the years to come.

Please pay special attention to our many sponsors and those who advertise in this book. Please patronize the business’s listed in this book. Without their support we could never make this day possible. Our Corporate sponsors are very generous and we are very grateful for their support. We would like to thank the Yarmouth Tourism Preservation Fund for believing in us and supporting our efforts to bring thousands of people to the Mid Cape area to help celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and the com-ing of Spring.

It is with great pleasure and admiration that we announce the Grand Marshal for the 9th Annual Cape Cod Parade, Charlie Moore - the Mad Fisherman. One of this country’s most well-known anglers, Moore hosts Charlie Moore Outdoors on NESN and Charlie Moore: No Offense on the NBC Sports Network. The TV personality is known for his fast-talking and sometimes brash hosting style. He is regularly joined by a cast of celebrity guests on his show, ranging from New England Patriots players to actors. He is also the recipient of four New England Emmy Awards and is a member of the New England Sports Hall of Fame. His memoir, The Mad Fisherman, was published in 2008 chronicling his path from unemployment and near-poverty to celebrat-ed host of two top-rated sports programs.

Chief Michael Whelan of the Dennis Police Department is this year’s Mayor of the parade. Chief Whalen was instrumental during the early years of this parade and without his time and effort we would never be where we are today.

Mr. Steve Gill, who has served on the Parade Committee from its beginning, is being recognized as the Chairman’s Award recipient for his tireless hours of volunteerism and the dedicated work effort he brings to this committee.

This spring we will be holding our Second Annual St. Patrick’s Beach Run. This 5K walk /run goes a long way to supporting the parade. Our race will again begin and end at Sea Gull Beach in Yarmouth, and takes place Saturday, May 3, 2014. Please come out and support your parade.

To all of our Colleen winners and every young woman who entered thank you. We are blessed to have such talented, intel-ligent young women amongst us.

Lastly thank you to each and everyone of you who comes out to watch and support this parade. This is your day, your pa-rade. Please invite your friends and family to join us. Be safe, and God Bless you all.

Respectfully, Mairead McCann and John Fallon

The Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade Committee is pleased and honored to present the Thomas Francis Meagher Award to Richard Riehle, Terry Clen and Richard Sayers. All three men were instrumental in the development of Cape Cod Veterans, Inc. (CCVO), a 501 (c) 3 non-profit charity which does so much for Cape Cod’s veterans and their families. Whether it is visiting veterans in area nursing homes, raising funds for the wounded warfighters or donating to military families in need, Cape Cod Veterans exemplifies what a true non-profit is all about. All three gentlemen were also key to the start-up and continued success of the Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade. For further information about CCVO, please visit www.capecodveterans.org.

We salute you all and thank you for your service!

From left to right: Vincent Man-nion-Brodeur, Jeff Brodeur, Terry Clen, Richie Riehle and Richie Sayers visiting the Wounded Warf-ighters in Bethesda, MD.

Terry Clen began his military service in the United States Marine Corps in September 1970 as an 0311 Infantry Soldier. He was on several deployments all over the world. He then joined the Connecticut Army National Guard as a Scout Platoon Squad Leader and made his way through the ranks to Scout Platoon Sergeant. He then switched his MOS to Aviation as a First Sergeant, and finally as a Bridge Engineering First Sergeant. He was also an instructor at NCO Schools and Officer Candidate School for 15 years while serving with several line companies and battalions. He retired in 2000 as an E-8 First Sergeant.

Richie Sayers was born and raised in Jamaica Plain. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1969. Ritchie served with the 1st Aviation Brigade attached to the 68th Assault Helicopter Company and was also attached to the 3rd Squadron 17th Air Cavalry. After one year, Richie was attached to the 54 M. P. Company at Fort Ord in California. After his military service was completed, he worked for the M.B.T.A. as a Bus/Green Line Operator for 29 years.

Richie Riehle enlisted in the Army in May 1968, Airborne Infantry. He served in Vietnam from April 1969-April 1970 with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade. He was discharged from active duty in May 1971 and enlisted in the Reserves. Richie was appointed to the New York Fire Department (Engine 37, Harlem) in September 1972. He retired from the Military and the Fire Department in 1995.

(Queen) will receive a $1,000 scholarship, and the three runners-up court winners will each receive a

$500 scholarship.

Chloe MurphyChloe is a senior at Chatham High School. She will be attending the University of Dublin as forestry major in the fall. Chloe is hoping to have a career centered on envi-ronmental conservation. At Chatham High School, she has demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence while participat-ing in variety of extracurricular activities. Those activities have included yearbook, Relay for Life, and interning at the Chatham Conservation Commission. Cloe’s bucket list includes traveling to a third world country and building a personal library. Chloe’s family is from County Cork in southern Ireland. She decided to attend college in Dublin to further explore her heritage. Chloe ended her scholarship essay by saying, “My Irish heritage means so much to me, and it inspired my dreams, my future, and gave me the personality that I have.”

Peggy O’SullivanPeggy is a senior at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School. She will be attend-ing UMASS Lowell next school year as a business major. Peggy’s passion is music. She hopes to be a tour manager after gradu-ation from college. At Dennis Yarmouth High School Peggy is an active member

of the marching band, winter percussion, concert band, and jazz band. She has also been chosen for the All-Cape Band, Orchestra, and Jazz Band. Peggy’s community service activities have included the Dennis-Yarmouth Relay for Life and Special Olympics. In the future, she has a dream to live in a foreign country and immerse herself in another culture. She has visited Ireland many times. Even though Peggy has lived on Cape Cod her whole life, she calls Ireland home which is where her family and heart reside. Peggy said in her essay, “Being Irish brings people together, and I couldn’t be more proud to be part of such a loving Irish family.”

CourtneyNelsonCourtney is a senior at Barnstable High School. Her current rigorous academic course load includes three AP classes. She has been accepted into Catholic University as a Bio-medical engineering major. Courtney would like to work in Africa after graduat-ing from college to better the people in that country. An athlete as well, her passion is soccer. Courtney has been the captain of the soccer team during her junior and senior year. Commu-nity service is a major part of Courtney’s life. Her endeavors have included working at the NOAH shelter, volunteering at the Cape Cod Challenge Club, and being a member of ECHO and KidzPlay4FreeProject. The KidzPlay4FreeProject provides soccer clinics and tournament opportunities to involve homeless children of Cape Cod in sports. Courtney describes her family as typically Irish Catholic. She believes the attributes that define her were influenced by her Irish heritage. Courtney’s strong reli-gious beliefs, determination, and stubbornness all are connected to her Irish heritage.

Erin SullivanErin is a senior attending Nauset Regional High School. She has been accepted into the nursing program at Sacred Heart University. After graduating from college, Erin would like to be a Nurse Practitioner. She is pas-sionate about helping others and coordinated a hockey fundraiser that raised over $2000

Nicholas Xiarhos foundation, and Children’s Center in Hyannis. Erin has grown up in a tight knit Irish Catholic family. Her Irish heritage means fam-ily, pride, and togetherness to her. Erin would like to one day visit County Cork, Ireland to spend time with her relatives.

The Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade Committee is pleased to have

“Charlie Moore”as the 9th Parade Grand Marshal

Celebrity angler and TV host Charlie Moore, also known as “the Mad Fisherman”, will serve as Grand Marshal of the 2014 Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade on Saturday, March 8, 2014. The annual parade will kick off at 11 AM in Yarmouth.

One of country’s most well-known anglers, Moore hosts Charlie Moore Outdoors on NESN and Charlie Moore: No Offense on the NBC Sports Network. His memoir, The Mad Fisherman, was published in 2008 chronicling his path from unemployment and near-poverty to celebrated host of two top-rated sports television programs.

“Charlie Moore has become a household name in New Eng-land and we’re thrilled to have him leading the parade in 2014,” said John Fallon, Co-Chairman of The Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade. “He’ll bring his signature high energy and big personality to both the parade and the Grand Marshal’s dinner. He’s a real fun factor!”

The Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Pa-rade has become one of the most anticipated offseason occasions on the Cape, drawing thousands of spectators from all over the coun-try annually. The event features marching bands, floats, antique cars, special guests and other fam-ily friendly entertainment.

For more information on the pa-rade or the Grand Marshal’s Din-ner/Dance, visit www.capecodst-patsparade.com or www.facebook.com/capestpatsparade.
