TELEVISIONThe Mustangs are scheduled for two regular season televi-sion contests in 2014 with the first a Sept. 14 visit to UCLA onthe Pac-12 Network. For the sixth time during the previous seven seasons, CalPoly’s rivalry series against UC Santa Barbara will play out before a national tele-vision audience with Fox Sports West carrying the Oct. 25 clash at Harder Stadium.RADIOCal Poly will audio stream each of the program’s 2014 home matches, in addi-tion to the Oct. 25 game at UC Santa Barbara and any Big West ConferenceTournament and NCAA Tournament contests. Brian Cronin is in his ini-tial season as the CalPoly men’s soccer pro-

gram’s director of operations.

Cronin joins Cal Poly’sstaff after serving the past twoyears as the director of opera-tions at Clemson, helping the2013 Tigers squad to anNCAA Tournament appear-ance. Prior to his time atClemson, Cronin was anaccount executive with MajorLeague Soccer’s San Jose

Earthquakes and helpedcoordinate match-day opera-tions and off-site promotionalevents. A 2008 graduate ofChapman University, Croninwas a two-year letterwinnerfor the Panthers after helpingCabrillo Junior College(Aptos, Calif.) to a 2005

CCCAA state tournament run-ner-up showing. Cronin holds an NSCAAAdvanced National diplomaand spent four seasonscoaching at Aptos (Calif.) HSand three seasons at CabrilloJC. During a four-year spellwith the Santa Cruz CountyBreakers – a U.S. Soccer

Developmental Academy pro-gram – Cronin providedcoaching for all youth teamsquads. He has also spenttime working with the U.S.Soccer DevelopmentalAcademy in Sarasota, Fla., asa member of the operationsstaff during the AcademyShowcase events.

Astandout player atWestmont College,Scott Williams is in his

second season as a volun-teer assistant with the CalPoly men’s soccer program. Williams arrived at CalPoly after serving as anassistant coach at SantaBarbara-based Westmont forthe past two seasons. With the Warriors,

Williams was responsiblecoaching Westmont’s goal-keepers, overseeing backlinedevelopment, fortifying theprogram’s strength and con-ditioning regimen and help-ing to recruit the team’s 2013and 2014 incoming classes. Williams, concurrently

completing a master’s degreein kinesiology at Cal Poly,assists in the development ofthe Mustang backline playersand helps implement a sport-specific strength and nutritionplan. A 2011 graduate ofWestmont and four-year start-

ing left back and midfielder,Williams helped the Warriorsreach the quarterfinal round ofthe 2008 National Associationof Intercollegiate AthleticsNational Championship tour-nament. Williams is a native ofAlbuquerque.

Named interim headcoach of the Cal Polymen’s soccer team

on Aug. 11, 2014, Phil Ruskinis in his second overall sea-son with the Mustang pro-gram. During Ruskin’s initial2013 season on campus asan assistant coach, Cal Poly

posted a 10-9-2 mark enroute to finishing seventhamong Division I teams with aprogram-record 43 goalsscored. The Mustangs alsofinished ninth nationally intotal points (124) and goalsper game (2.05), 10th inpoints per game (5.90), 15thin assists (38) and 20th inassists per game (1.81).Additionally, Cal Poly placedfour players on the All-BigWest Conference team. Ruskin arrived in SanLuis Obispo after serving as

an assistant at Stony Brook(2011-12), where he wascharged with the directionand training of the program’sgoalkeepers and overallrecruiting efforts. Ruskinhelped the Seawolves to the2011 America EastConference championshipand a berth into the NCAATournament. He also over-saw the development of goal-keeper Stefan Manz, the pro-gram’s career leader with 17shutouts, and three-timeAmerica East Midfielder of

the Year and two-time All-America selection LeonardoFernandes, drafted inJanuary by Major LeagueSoccer’s Philadelphia Union. Prior to his time at StonyBrook, Ruskin was an assis-tant coach and director ofoperations at Valparaiso(2009-11), where he workedin all aspects of player train-ing and recruiting and alsoserved as an assistantstrength and conditioningcoach for the athletics depart-ment. With the Crusaders,

Ruskin helped transformdefender Stefan Antonijevicinto a 2012 MLSSupplemental Draft pick bySporting KC. A four-year letterwinner(2004-07) at Division IIIElmhurst (Ill.) College, Ruskin– still ranked 10th in programhistory with 66 appearances –owns a United States SoccerFederation A coaching licenseand National Soccer CoachesAssociation of AmericaAdvanced National andGoalkeeper Level 2 diplomas.

Support By any measure or metric, the Cal Poly men’s soccer team’ssupport at Alex G. Spanos Stadium is nearly unrivaled in thecollege game. Eight of the top 34 best-attended regular seasonmatches in the history of NCAA soccer have occurred atSpanos Stadium. Entering the 2014 campaign, the Mustangs have produced a42-15-10 overall mark at the complex and a 21-7-7 recordagainst Big West Conference opponents. Additionally, theMustangs have recorded 23 shutout victories at home while CalPoly’s goalkeepers have kept 27 clean sheets. Cal Poly has sold out all 11,075 seats at Spanos Stadium formatches against central coast rival UC Santa Barbara in 2008,2011, 2012 and 2013 – four contests that tie for the No. 11 spoton the list of the best-attended regular season matches inNCAA history.

Mustangs in the Pros The Cal Poly men’s program’s list of professional alumni grewlengthier during the 2014 offseason with two Mustangs taken in theMajor League Soccer SuperDraft before Mackenzie Pridham eventu-ally signed with Minnesota United FC (North American Soccer League)and George Malki with Arizona United SC (USL Professional Division). In 2012, Mustang alum Patrick McLain (2007-11) inked a free agentdeal with Chivas USA while midfielder Junior Burgos (2009-10) hookedon with Toronto FC (Burgos, currently with Atlanta Silverback of theNASL was also the first Mustang to be taken in the MLS SuperDraft in2011). Left back Wes Feighner (2008-11) was drafted by SeattleSounders FC in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft, but was not signedby the club. The only Big West Conference player to have ever appeared in anEnglish Football League match, midfielder Anton Peterlin (2006-08)signed with Everton FC of the Barclays Premier League in 2009. Continuing with the 2012 Major League Soccer CentralCoast Showcase contested between San Jose Earthquakesand Colorado Rapids, the Cal Poly men’s program has hostedfour separate MLS exhibition series at Alex G. Spanos Stadiumduring the past five years. In 2008, San Jose, D.C. United and Columbus Crew madeappearances on the central coast. In 2009, Seattle SoundersFC contested its first official match in club history against SanJose at Spanos Stadium. Entering the 2014 campaign, the Mustangshave produced a 42-15-10 overall mark at the com-plex and a 21-7-7 record against Big WestConference opponents. Additionally, theMustangs have recorded 23 shutout victories athome while Cal Poly’s goalkeepers have kept 27clean sheets. Nationally, Cal Poly’s home support is almostwithout peer. Of the top 34 best-attended regularseason matches in the history of NCAA soccer,eight have occurred at Spanos Stadium during thepast seven seasons. Most recently, Cal Poly’s11,075-seat sellout for a 1-1 draw against rival UCSanta Barbara on Oct. 25, 2013 ranked as the sec-ond most-attended collegiate soccer match lastyear – outdrawing even the College Cup champi-onship. With the seating capacity of 11,075, SpanosStadium can accommodate 3,480 fans in the chair-back and bench seating on the refurbishedCalifornia avenue side. In 2009, a video board wasinstalled at a cost of more than $1 million. Twiceduring the past six seasons Fox Soccer Channelhas produced a national television broadcast ofCal Poly’s nationally-recognized showdownagainst UC Santa Barbara at Spanos Stadium.
