A break tank is a reservoir which is placed between the water gauge and one or more connection point. Break tanks are also known as disconnection tanks. Such break tanks are applied where a where an interruption of the water supply is necessary or mandatory.

The most important reason to use a disconnection tank is to prevent the contamination of the water supply by the presence of substances in the event of back-flow of the water. This includes slaughterhouses, mortuaries, dentists, irrigation, laboratories, drinking water trays livestock, car washes, laundries etc. But break tanks are also used in systems with stagnant water such as sprinkler systems, extinguishing water, etc. Even in places where they add substances to the water, such as antibiotics, one is obliged to place a disconnection tank between the drinking water supply and the indoor installation.

The break tank acts as a safety buffer, which prevents the backflow of contaminated water into the water supply. The safety of the water supply is therefore guaranteed for everyone. The obligation to apply a break tank is usually imposed by the waterworks.

The break tank consists out of a drinking water supply and a pump. The pump ensures the required water pressure after the disconnection tank. The type of pump is dependent of the amount and types of connection points. (taps, livestock containers, sprinklers, etc.) A proper calculation by an expert is there for necessary. A pump which is too small doesn’t give enough pressure, whilst a pump which is too big leads to unnecessary energy consumption and an excessive initial investment.

The volume of the break tank is not only determined by the connection points and the pump, but mostly by the drink water supply. Which is in turn dependent on the water pressure, pipe diameter and filling tap. For that matter, it is important to calculate your system properly. GEP is happy to serve you.

Interrupt your water supply

GEP has been trying to convince the society for over a decade regarding the necessity of decentralized water management. Nowadays we are able to offer several solutions for the development of a safe and sustainable decentralized water system. We are

specialized in the catching and cleaning of rainwater, rainwater recycling, grey water and intensive and extensive roof solutions. As a producer of system for decentralized water management, GEP is specialized in the development of pump systems and pump controls. This has

led to a wide assortment of break tanks. This wide assortment is applicable for both residential buildings and industrial buildings.

The implementation, connections and the volume of a break tank can vary greatly per type. The most important are the legal requirements which the break tank must meet. These are enforced by the waterworks and are defined in the European technical standard EN1717.

The break tanks which are produced in accordance to the regulations and legal requirements can easily be recognized by the KIWA and Belgaqua certifications. This means that the break tanks are, in Belgium and the Netherlands, according to the regulations and are thus considered safe in all aspects.
