ABOUT BLOOMSBURGBloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education.

Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff.

About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 200 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.

The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television.

The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.

The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.

2014 SEASON PREVIEW

Bloomsburg University men’s soccer head coach Paul Payne has led the Huskies for the past 15 seasons and has guided teams with a variety of looks, but this year’s edition may be the youngest squad he’s led to date. With 12 freshmen on the roster, there are unknowns – but also plenty of reasons to be optimistic. The dozen newcomers will look to add to a Huskies team which won its final three matches of 2013 and missed out on the postseason by way of a conference tiebreaker after being in playoff contention until the final day of the regular season. In the early going at least, there’s been a number of traits shown by the new class to have Payne believing this year’s team can again put itself in playoff positioning come Novem-ber. “Although they’re young they haven’t acted young,” Payne said of his newcomers. “So many of the freshmen stepped on the field and it was as though they had already been here and competed at the college level already. We’re excited – but there are unknowns.” The amount of freshmen so far has also brought a noticeable impact on the veterans. “The upperclassmen realized they needed to be responsible for the culture of the team,” Payne stressed. “They’re still learning how to lead as well, but they have embraced that role.” Here’s a look at the Huskies roster for 2014:

FORWARDSSeveral high-profile players have led the attack for the Huskies in recent years, most recently all-conference and all-region selection Fran Miller who graduated last spring.

“It’s been an area where we’ve relied on one or two players in the past, but we don’t have a set lineup right now,” Payne said. “With the group of freshmen and upperclassmen returning, we have a good mix of players who have size and pace.”

Spencer Conrad brings the most experience to the front line, appearing in 33 games during his first two seasons with the Huskies. The coaching staff also has high expectations for a player who was with the program a year ago, but missed the season due to a knee injury – redshirt freshman Austin Tran-sue, who is expected to make an impact this fall.

Junior James Kiama brings a familiarity with the program but will see his first time on the field in 2014. Along with him is a quartet of freshmen – Anthony Cerda, Hamilton Rodkey,

Brian Kilcoyne and Cian O’Connell.

“I think we can cause teams some problems because of the versatility of the types of players we have,” Payne said. “We have big, strong forwards as well as quick kids who can outrun opponents.”

MIDFIELDThe most familiar faces will return in the midfield.

“This is where the leadership and experience will come into play,” Payne said. “That’s important because they’re the link between the forwards and the back. We’re expecting a lot out of the midfield group.”

Senior Nick Izzo played in all 18 matches last year and is at full strength after battling injuries in past seasons. He’s joined by fellow senior Nate Conrad along with sophomore Josh Smith who both saw extensive minutes as starters last year as well as freshman Brett Milden who could all see time in the center with attacking roles.

Junior Chris Pawlowski has seen time in 34 games during his season seasons with the Huskies, tallying three career goals, and will also fight for a spot though he has battled preseason injuries.

Juniors Stephen Pieri and Mike Bamford may move up from previous roles as backs to wing positions this year. Pieri has seen time in 30 matches the past two years while Bamford started 15 of 16 games played with a pair of goals last fall.

Two other veterans – Matt Zima and Roma Loboda also could switch to the midfield and bring a physical presence for the Huskies. Zima has started 22 of 31 games played the last two years while Loboda enters a redshirt senior season after miss-ing all but three games last year due to injury.

DEFENSEThe youngest group may be the backline, although the lineup could be interchangeable with the versatility several players

2014 SEASON PREVIEW

offer Payne. Bamford, Loboda, Pieri and Zima could all see time as veterans on defense along with a number of new play-ers. The Huskies also will benefit from good overall team size on the defense.

Cameron Cleary, Samuel Izzo, Kris Gross and Andrew Templin will all vie for time in their freshman seasons.

“The defense is young, but some of the players in the midfield can easily drop into the backline,” Payne said. “We have a solid group of players who aren’t flashy but have adapted to the college game. The question is the ability of being able to hold up with the wear and tear of the college game as the season progresses.”

GOALKEEPEROne thing was for certain last season – the presence of Bernie Roell in the net. Roell, who moved into second place all-time in Huskies shutouts with six last year to give him 15 for his career, played every second of his senior season.

His graduation leaves a battle between three players to fill those shoes.

“The battle continues,” Payne said. “It will be interesting to see who emerges, but it is a solid group. I don’t see it being a weak link for us at all.”

Sophomore Jacob Pesarcik is the incumbent after serving as Roell’s backup last year. He’s joined in the goalkeeper ranks by two impressive freshmen – Jared Ott, who brings an imposing 6’5” frame and Taylor LeSage who has strong technical skills to go along with his size.

“It could be a true number one, or it could be a collection of players each game,” Payne said.

OVERALLLast year’s results proved the tight nature of the PSAC as 13 of the Huskies’ 18 matches were decided by one goal.

“The teams that were strong are going to be there, but we know that it will be a toss-up,” Payne surmised.

Bloomsburg will have added advantage when it plays on home turf this year with the renovations to the former Sports Sta-dium. Now known as Steph Pettit Stadium, the men’s soccer team hosts the first official event at the newly resurfaced and renamed field on Sept. 4.

“Already it has been noticeable. It makes the players feel ex-cited when they step on a new pitch and they know of the other things that are coming because of Steph’s generosity,” Payne said. “It’s a great testament to Bloomsburg and all of athletics here that someone who was here for football was willing to make the commitment to all of Bloomsburg athletics.”

While it may be natural to surmise that the Huskies may build in strength over the course of the season with so many new faces, Payne is optimistic that the Huskies will be able to find consistency right away.

“I’m hoping we start strong, stay strong and finish strong,” he said.

This year the Huskies coaching staff welcomes two new addi-tions – a full-time assistant, Matt Haney who will work with both the men’s and women’s teams. Haney, a former team
