ABOUT BLOOMSBURGBloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education.

Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff.

About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 200 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.

The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses , noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television.

The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.

The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.

2014 SEASON PREVIEW

By Scott Eddy, Assistant Sports Information Director

As the winningest field hockey program in the nation with 16 national championships as well as 18 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crowns, the Bloomsburg Huskies are familiar with having a bull’s eye on their backs. This year, the Huskies hope the role of underdog suits them just as well as that of favorites has so many times. Picked fourth in the PSAC preseason coaches’ poll, the Huskies still have some pieces to put together as the season begins. With five freshmen and 11 sophomores making up a bulk of the roster, experience may seem like a weakness for Bloomsburg – but in reality, many of those sophomores saw major minutes a season ago leaving the team with fewer question marks than at this time last fall. “Their growth over the spring has been huge,” said head coach Nikki Rhoads, in her fifth season at the helm with a 65-16 record the past four years. “One of the biggest things we took out of last year was the team unity that emerged. We started to play for each other. If we continue to keep it all about us, we have the chance to really continue to grow.” FORWARDSThe Huskies attack needs to replace Brittany Mathews and her 27 points from last year, but returns leading scorer and third team All-PSAC pick Felicia Domenici who tallied 14 goals and 32 points in 2013.

Along with Domenici is junior Nikki Gattone (two goals, six points in 2013) and a trio of sophomores – Sam Peters (six goals, 13 points), Laura Gerhard (three goals, seven points) and Stephanie Halsted (one goal, three points).

The coaching staff also has high expectations for redshirt sopho-more Whitney Kowski, who sat last year after transferring from Division I Hofstra. “I think she will be a surprise for the entire conference,” Rhoads said.

Junior Tess Shelly along with incoming freshmen Geneka Mahan and Gina Monahan will also vie for time on the front line.

MIDFIELDThe Huskies are loaded with experience in the midfield, with all returning players expected to fill starting roles.

Senior Candice Smith, a first team all-conference honoree last year with nine points, leads the midfielders. A familiar face in a new position – senior Nikki Black, a three-year member of the forward line who makes the transition to midfield after starting

all 20 games last year, joins her.

With Smith in the center mid spot and Black on the left side of the field, sophomore Eleanor Kirby is expected to reprise her starting role on the right side.

“I think our midfield line is going to be strong,” Rhoads said. “They all have the experience and that’s always a plus.”

Sophomore Peyton Shockley has looked strong in the preseason along with first year player Casey Willey.

DEFENSEBloomsburg has two large sets of shoes to fill following the graduation of All-Americans Jaclyn Beasley and Samantha Fac-ciolla on the back line. That doesn’t mean the cupboard is bare, however.

Junior Gabby Nisiotis leads the defense after starting 38 of 39

games the past two years. “She sees the field very well and is a great, vocal communicator,” Rhoads said.

Rhoads also believes the Huskies have an impact player in ju-nior Meagen Hill who made 15 starts a year ago and has shown growth during her time in maroon and gold.

Senior Courtney Berger has battled injury the past two years and the Huskies hope she can be at full strength this fall. A trio of sophomores also saw action last year – Steph Buck, Ciera Lahr and Lexi Roth.

Joining the returners on defense is transfer Alexis Carroll, an all-conference pick with Salisbury (MD) and helped lead the team to the Division III National Championship Game last year before coming to Bloomsburg for the spring season. Freshman Sally DeLuca also has impressed the coaching staff with her tal-ent and calm demeanor on the field since joining the program.

GOALKEEPERSWhile a preseason battle is on going to decide the starter, one thing is certain – the Huskies will have a different face inside

the cage this season following the graduation of all-conference goalkeeper Megan Eppley.

Battling to take the spot is sophomore Lindsey Cassel and junior Emiley Maiorana.

“They’re both very good and have grown tremendously in their years with us and were able to learn behind Megan Eppley,” Rhoads said. “They’ve worked very hard and put in the time to make the improvements they need to make.”

OUTLOOKWith an ability to play fast thanks to a strong and talented mid-field and defense, the Huskies figure to be in every game they play this season regardless of their opponent. The difference in taking the next step will be whether or not the team can make the necessary improvements to complete the package.

The fact that the defending national champion, Shippensburg, neither won the conference last year nor was picked to win this year (that distinction went to a senior-laden Millersville squad) hints at the continued strength of the PSAC. In recent years, however, the conference has continued to add depth from top to bottom.

“Millersville is the team to beat; those juniors are now seniors and they want it all. Shippensburg lost a lot to graduation, but they’re always a team to beat,” Rhoads said. “West Chester and ESU have always been successful. I think IUP, Slippery Rock and Kutztown teams have shown great growth in the last few years. The conference is always tough and will be again.”

“We look forward to a challenging and exciting season. Maturi-ty is going to be the question for us – we are still a young team with 11 sophomores, we need to be able to take that next step.”

Bloomsburg opens the season with a pair of games in South Carolina – at Limestone on Sept. 6 and at Newberry on Sept. 7. The Huskies debut at the newly renovated Steph Pettit Stadium to open PSAC play vs. Kutztown on Sept. 9.

THE HUSKIES LEGACY

It was second place in both the Pennsyl-vania Conference and the NCAA Divi-sion III championships. Hurst, Shearer and Graupp named All-Americans.

1987The Huskies win their fourth national championship with a 1-0 victory over William Smith. The 24 wins represent a new school record. Cindy Daeche and Sharon Reilly named All-Americans.

1988A 1-0 win over Kutztown gives Blooms-burg the PSAC championship. At the Division III championships, the Huskies finish second, losing a two-overtime thriller to Trenton State. Daneen Fero named the National Player of the Year, while Alicia Terrizzi named All-Amer-ican. Set school single-game record for goals with 13 against Marywood.

1989For the second year in a row, the Huskies lost the NCAA Division III championship game in overtime after St. Lawrence beat the Huskies, 2-1. Sharon Reilly and Kathy Frick named All-Americans.

1990The Huskies rolled through the first 23 games of the year with-out a loss. But, in the season’s final game, the NCAA championship, Trenton State dashed the hopes of a Huskies’ title with a 2-1 win. Gisela Smith named Na-tional Player of the Year, while Frick and Trudy Horst earn All-American honors.

1991Heartbreak again for the Huskies in the NCAA title game with a 1-0 loss to Trenton State. Smith repeats as Player of the Year with Horst, Beth Bowman and Denise Miller being named All-Americans.

1992The Huskies won the PSAC title with a 2-1 win over Lock Haven, but lost a week later to the Bald Eagles in the NCAA finals. Denise Miller wins the Player of the Year award for the third straight year. Shelley Miller and Lori Hippensteel named All-Americans.

1993For the first time since 1987, the Huskies win the national champion-ship. Bloomsburg sweeps Lock Haven for both the PSAC and NCAA titles. Shelley Miller named Player of the

Year, while Nicole Schiavello, Michelle McFalls and Chris Basalyga named All-Americans.

The 1987 Huskies squad set a then-school record with 24 wins on their way to an NCAA championship, the fourth in BU’s history.

The Huskies celebrate winning the 1993 national title.

1994The Huskies go 16-1-2 in the regular season but drop a pair of 2-1 games to Lock Haven in the PSAC and NCAA title games. Shelley Miller, Basalyga, Chris Fink and Rachel Trinidad named All-Americans.

1995For the second straight year, the Hus-kies finish runners-up in both the PSAC and NCAA championships. Blooms-burg tied a school record with 16 shut-outs during the season. Four players, Basalyga, Michelle Martin, Tracy Bandt and Nicole Mower are named All-Americans.

1996Player of the Year Michelle Martin leads the Huskies back to the top with a 2-1 win over Lock Haven in the NCAA finals. Martin sets a school record with 18 assists, while the team set a school record with 14 goals against Philadel-phia Textile. Bev Hartley, Bandt and Mower named All-Americans.

1997Make it two straight NCAA titles for the Huskies, who beat Kutztown 2-0 to win the title. Bloomsburg won its final 15 games on the way to the crown. Beth Canner, Amber Hess, Jess Kircher and Kelly Platt named All-Americans.

1998For the third year running, the Hus-kies win the NCAA Division II title, this time with a 4-3 overtime win against Lock Haven. It was that same Lock Haven team a week earlier which stopped the Huskies’ winning streak at 35. Bloomsburg sets a school record

with 90 goals scored for the year. Can-ner, Kircher and Platt earn All-Ameri-can honors.

1999For the first time in NCAA field hockey history, a team has won four straight titles after a 2-0 win against Bentley. Bloomsburg, winners of 54 of its last 55 games, is led by Player of Year Jess Kircher and All-Americans Bridgett Heckman, Leah Conte, Krista Engle and Trish Leitzel.

2000The Huskies won their first four games of the year before dropping a 1-0, over-time game to Indiana (PA). In the PSAC playoffs, the Huskies lost again to the Indians, 2-0. The loss knocked the Hus-kies from the NCAA playoff picture and denied them a shot at their fifth straight national title. Conte, Engle, Leitzel and Heather Weikel named All-Americans.

2001After starting the season 5-3, the Hus-kies rattled off nine straight wins, in-cluding a 3-2 overtime win against Lock Haven, to finish with 14 wins. However, for the first time in 20 years, the team did not advance to post-season play. Shanna Fritz, Marlea Partlon, Trish Leitzel and Nikki Hartranft were named All-Americans.

2002Bloomsburg capped a perfect season with a near perfect game as it beat the Falcons of Bentley College, 5-0, for the NCAA Championship. 2006Bloomsburg regained the NCAA cham-pionship with a 1-0 win over Bentley College in Pensacola, FL to cap a perfect 24-0 season. Jamie Vanartsdalen led the team with 26 goals and 10 assists, while Samantha Kropa, who scored the only goal in the NCAA title game, added 23 goals. Vanartsdalen, Brozena and Tracey Hudak were each named All-American.

2007The Huskies made it back-to-back national championships with a 5-2 victory over UMass-Lowell. This NCAA title was the 14th for head coach Jan Hutchinson and the fifth in the past six years for the Huskies. Vanartsdalen led Bloomsburg in goals (35), assists (19) and points (89) and was named Na-tional Player of the Year. Along with Vanartsdalen, Whitney Miller and Chelsea Due each re-ceived first-team All-American honors.

2008Bloomsburg won three straight national championships for the fourth time in its history with a dominating 6-2 win over UMass-Lowell. The title was the sixth in the last seven years and Jan Hutchinson’s 15th in her

illustrious career. Vanartsdalen ended her career with three goals and an as-sist, putting the Huskies on the board early with a goal at the 1:20 mark. Vana-rtsdalen earned National Player of the Year honors for the second straight year, leading BU with 40 goals, 22 assists and 102 points. 2009The Huskies won their fourth straight national championship for the second time in school history with a 3-2 win

over UMass-Lowell. It was Blooms-burg’s second straight national cham-pionship game victory over the River Hawks and the first four-peat since 1996-99. Amanda Riley scored two goals in the win, helping retiring coach Jan Hutchinson go out on top with her 16th national title. Riley led the Huskies with 27 goals and 62 points and was named first-team All-American. Joining her were national players of the year Maggey Bloskey and Chelsea Due while Aubrey Carman and Caitlin Koczynski also received All-American honors.

2011After winning the first 19 games of the season and earning the right to host the NCAA Division II Championships, the Huskies’ perfect season came to an abrupt stop in the national semifinals. Bloomsburg fell to West Chester in pen-alty strokes, 3-2 (2OT). However, the Huskies did win their fourth consecu-tive PSAC title; their 18th in school his-tory. Meghan Hollenbach, Amanda Ri-ley, and Amber Aulenbach were named NFHCA Division II All-Americans.

A true NCAA coaching legend, Jan Hutchinson retired at the end of the 2009 season, after seeing the Huskies win their fourth consecutive NCAA Division II champion-ship. As head field hockey coach, she was in charge of a program that has won 16 national championships and 17 conference titles. While as head softball coach, she is the NCAA Division II all-time leader in career wins and has made an NCAA-record 28 consecutive trips to the Division II championships. Hutchinson also is the win-ningest college coach in any division with 1,806 combined wins between field hockey and softball.

FIELD HOCKEYWhile at Bloomsburg, Hutchinson’s field hockey squads posted winning records in 31 of her 32 seasons and amassed an overall record of 591-75-20 for a winning percent-age of .872. She is the winningest coach in NCAA field hockey history and is the only coach with over 500 victories.

Under Hutchinson, the Huskies have enjoyed many outstanding seasons and have won 16 or more games on 26 occasions. Her teams won national championships in 1981, 1983, 1984, 1987, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and in 2009. Her first string of four straight titles (1996-99) was the first time in the history of NCAA field hockey that the feat was accomplished. Her teams have also registered nine national runner-up finishes.

In addition, the Huskies captured Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championships in 1983, 1984, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2009, garnering eight runner-up showings.

Hutchinson has been chosen as the national Division II Coach of the Year seven times in her career, including 1991, 1998, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2009. Her 2006 team went undefeated and untied on its way to the NCAA D-II championship, the fourth time in school history for that to happen.

Her 2008 team set numerous school, conference and NCAA Division II marks, includ-ing a record for goals scored in a season with 161, shattering the mark of 132 set by the Huskies in 2007. She also coached Jamie Vanartsdalen, the NCAA all-time record holder for goals and points in a season and career.

Four athletes on the 2009 team achieved NFH-CA All-American honors, bringing the total under Hutchinson to 54 performers who have combined to win 105 All-American awards. Under Hutchinson’s leadership, 12 Bloomsburg players, including Vanartsdalen in 2007 and 2008, have also been named national “Player of the Year,” the most of any coach in Division II.

SOFTBALLOne of the most successful coaches ever in Di-vision II softball history, Jan Hutchinson retired at the end of the 2010 season.

During her career as coach of the Huskies, Hutchinson posted a record of 1,215-288-2 (.805) and has made an NCAA record 28 con-secutive trips to the NCAA championship tour-nament. She has the most wins of any NCAA Division II coach in history and is sixth on the all-time wins list regardless of division. She is also second on the NCAA Division list and sev-enth overall for highest winning percentage.

Bloomsburg has been to the championship round nine times, twice finishing as the national runner-up with losses each time in extra in-nings in the national title game. She also has six third-place showings and two fourth-place finishes. The Huskies also won the 1982 AIAW national championship.

In softball, Bloomsburg holds 16 NCAA Di-vision II individual, team or championship records. In only her fourth season, Hutchinson won the national championship “double” in the 1981-82 school year, claiming the field hockey title in the fall and the softball championship that spring.

Bloomsburg has dominated Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) competition win-ning 15 softball championships. In addition, her players have enjoyed recognition in softball with 36 players earning 57 All-American awards.

OVERALLHutchinson’s achievements in coaching have not gone unnoticed by her peers. She has been honored with induction into both the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Halls of Fame. In addition, Hutchinson was named the winner of the C. Vivian Stringer Award by the United States Sports Academy in the summer of 2006.

Hutchinson’s coaching talents have not only helped those as student-athletes, but several of her former players have gone on to coach at the intercollegiate level. At Bloomsburg, she has former All-American performers as her top as-sistant coaches in softball.

Others have gone on to coaching jobs elsewhere, such as Janelle Breneman (head softball coach at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro), Marci Hickey (head softball coach at the Uni-versity of Vermont), Leah Conte (former assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach at Mary Washington College) and Kathy Frick (former head coach at Goucher College, Bloomsburg and current head coach of Lafayette University lacrosse.)

Two former softball players have also played professionally. Janelle Breneman was a member of the Georgia Pride and Marty Laudato was a member of the Tampa Bay Fire Stix. In 1999, Laudato was named WPSL Hitter of the Year.

A 1971 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, Hutchinson also earned a master’s degree in education from the school in 1979. Prior to Bloomsburg, she initiated the women’s physical education program at Blair Academy and served as head coach for field hockey, basketball and softball. She has also been inducted into the Newton High School and Sussex County (NJ) Halls of Fame. In 2000, the Bloomsburg softball field was named in her honor.
