In 1999, AIA North Carolina F. Carter Williams Gold Medalist J. Hyatt Hammond, FAIA, established a fund to provide scholarships for young professionals to attend the AIA North Carolina Design Conference of up to $500 are awarded annually to up to six applicants.
Jim Williams, AIA2014 Design Awards Chair
As a Partner and National Director of Design, Jim leads Little’s design directors responsible for ensuring that clients receive design solutions that not only provide remarkable architecture but also create a catalyst for improved per-formance. He has more than 29 years of international architectural design, project management and due diligence experience, primarily with large-scale, mixed-use, office and award winning retail and community projects. In addition to serving various roles with the AIA, Jim is a past Board member and Officer of the Charlotte Regional Chapter of the US Green Building Council and has served as a past Chairman of the City of Concord Historic Preservation Com-mission. Jim also served on the Executive Committee of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Charlotte District Council and was Chair of the Technical Assistance Panels Committee. In addition, he has taught a Masters of Architecture Design Studio at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte College of Architecture and serves as a member of their Pro-fessional Advisory Board. Jim received his Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Environmental Design from the University of Kansas.

Special thanks to Jim Williams, AIA who lead this year’s AIANC Design Awards Program and for his facilitating the exceptional work of the juries of the Residential Design Awards- including jury members; Daniel Snyder, III, AIA (Jury Chair); Jim Choate, AIA; Robert Cain, FAIA; & Sarah Hill: and the Design Awards- including jury members; Juan Moreno, AIA(Jury Chair); Ron Kirkpatrick; Alicia Murasaki; & Ann Thompson, AIA.
The Chapter Awards Committee is chaired by our Immediate Past President, Roger Leeson, AIA, from the Triangle Section. Chapter awards this year include the Firm of the Year Award, William Deitrick Service Medal, the Legacy Award, and the F. Carter Williams Gold Medal.
We are most appreciative of the leadership and professionalism of Dan and Juan in their chairing the respective juries. Additionally, thanks to each jury member for their collaborative efforts in their thoughtful and focused review and selections of the award recognitions.
Most importantly, eternal thanks to all the clients who commission our work and “Salute” to those clients and owners whose projects were selected for recognition this evening.

juryJuan Moreno, AIAJGMAJury Chair
Juan Gabriel Moreno, AIA, is an award winning architect and President/Founder
of JGMA (Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects). Mr. Moreno was born in Bogota, Colombia and studied architecture at California State Polytechnic University Pomona. He also lived in Florence, Italy where he studied under Superstudio founders Christiano Toraldo di Francia and Gianni Pettena. Mr. Moreno has been creating provocative architecture for more than 30 years. Mr. Moreno’s projects have received numerous awards and recognition from his peers. JGMA’s recent list of awards includes the 2014 and 2013 Driehaus Design Excellence Award, the 2013 Architizer International Design Award and 2012 AIA Chicago Design Award. JGMA was recently featured on television on ABC ‘s ñ Beat program. Mr. Moreno also was a recipient of the 2013 “PIECE” Award for International Excellence which recognizes Colombians working outside of the country and making a difference in the lives of children and communities. In addition, Juan was also a finalist for the HACIA Member of the Year Award, and the Chicago Latino Professional of the Year. Mr. Moreno is also actively involved in the architectural design and academic community. He is the past president of ARQUITECTOS (the Society of Latino Architects in Chicago), a Board Member of TeleChicago, a Board Member of Chicago Tech High School, and a Committee Member of Bogota Sister Cities Chicago.
Ron KirkpatrickSchool of the Art Institute of Chicago
Ron Kirkpatrick is Executive Director, Design + Construction at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The range of work realized by his group
includes campus wide master planning, preservation and restoration of historically significant structures, and capital improvements to the School’s built environments. Prior to joining the SAIC, he was lead designer and project manager for multiple institutional, workplace, residential, and hospitality projects in both Illinois and Florida. Ron is a graduate of the University of Florida where he studied architecture, history, and economics. In addition to his work at SAIC, Ron maintains his own practice through his partnership in the design firm Haelo Design.
Alicia MurasakiUniversity of Chicago
Alicia Murasaki is the University of Chicago’s assistant vice president, Campus Design + Sustainability. She oversees campus planning initiatives,
with a focus on developing interconnected master plan layers to guide short- and long-term growth strategies. In addition, Alicia heads the Office of Sustainability, which creates partnerships across campus to mitigate the University’s impact on the environment, raise visibility of sustainability issues on campus, and advance intellectual debate and analysis on the critical environmental issues of our time. Before joining the University in 2008, Alicia served as Principal Architect at Northwestern Memorial Hospital located in downtown Chicago from 2000 through 2008. In that role, she led all new major design and construction projects, including construction of Prentice Women’s Hospital. In addition, she led the collaboration between design teams and clinical and administrative stakeholders to align the design of the physical environment to the mission of the academic medical center. Alicia earned her Masters of Architecture from the University of Oregon and a Bachelor of Mathematics from Transylvania University.
Ann Thompson, AIARelated- Midwest
Ann Thompson is senior vice president at Related Midwest. She directs the company’s Architecture and Planning
Department and is responsible for architectural design, engineering, zoning and municipal approvals for all of the company’s projects. Since joining Related in 1995, Ms. Thompson has managed numerous residential and mixed-use developments for the company, overseeing the design of nearly 2,700 residences throughout her career. Her notable projects include Park Tower, Residences on Lake Shore Park and 340 on the Park, the first LEED-Silver residential tower in the Midwest. Ms. Thompson was involved with the redevelopment of three stalled condominium towers in the South Loop now known as the South Loop Luxury collection, leading the full redesign of the buildings’ common areas, amenity spaces and residential finishes. Ms. Thompson is a licensed architect in Illinois and a member of the American Institute of Architects. She is also a member of the Lycée Français de Chicago Facility Committee and Art Committee and serves on the Benefit Committee for the Museum of Contemporary Photography. Ms. Thompson received her Master of Architecture degree at the University of Illinois, Champaign.
