About

Gallery Shopping 101Can I take the art home with me today? The answer varies. If the piece is part of a specific show, they may mark it with a little colored dot and call you for pickup when the show ends. If patience isn’t your strong suit, you’re in luck! Many times you can take the work with you that day, depending on the gallery or the arrangements with the artist. If in doubt, just ask!

Is the price negotiable?Galleries strive to set prices in a way that is fair to both artists and buyers, so the price is not necessarily negotiable. Sometimes, gallery owners will negotiate if multiple pieces are being purchased. For any negotiation, most of them will need to confirm directly with the artist. If the price is firm, most galleries offer payment plans or layaway options to help you.

I don’t like the frame. Do I have options? The answer depends on the gallery and the artist. Sometimes the frame is the intention of the artist, picked specifically for that work. When this happens, the gallery owner may discuss if they are open to re-framing or selling the piece unframed. If you are willing to pay for a custom frame, several of the galleries in this Guide offer great framing services right inside their gallery.

Are these artists local? All of the galleries in this Guide represent artists that are local, though many also carry work from specially-chosen artists from across the United States.

I like it ... but is it “art”?Fiber wall hangings, jewelry, glass, photography, comic art, pottery, found-object sculpture – yes, they all are art! Traditionally, “fine art” was considered only as painting, drawing and sculpture. In recent decades, the definition has become more inclusive of artisanal, folk and “outsider” techniques of creative making. You will be exhilarated by the diversity of creations available in our local galleries - they will expand your definition of art ... and hopefully, expand your collection, as well!

About

Welcome! The Peak Radar Guide to Art Galleries of the Pikes Peak Region is a print directory based on organizational listings that can be found online throughout the year at www.peakradar.com, the Pikes Peak region’s website for arts, culture & fun! On PeakRadar.com, you’ll find an events calendar, artist profiles, and directories for public art and cultural groups to help you connect with the lively, diverse creative community in El Paso and Teller counties. This is the most comprehensive guide to our local galleries that has ever been assembled. We hope it inspires you to explore our region and get to know our incredible visual arts community just inside the doors of each gallery.

PeakRadar.com and its print guides, social media, and summer outreach are just one program of the Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region (COPPeR). Every day, COPPeR connects resident and visitors to arts & culture to enrich the Pikes Peak region. As a nonprofit, we work to achieve more than any one gallery, artist or performance group can do alone. Help us to create “a thriving community united by creativity” at www.coppercolo.org!
