From casual to elegant, intimate to grand, Parties of Note gives you a chance to gather in some of St. Louis’ greatest homes and exclusive venues to enjoy a variety of themed parties throughout the year. All parties are donated and 100% of the proceeds support the St. Louis Symphony and its outreach programs including SymphonyCares, that brings the healing power of music to children’s hospitals, cancer centers, and assisted living facilities.

french impressionism and Lunch at the saint Louis art museum

An elegant meal at the Saint Louis Art Museum’s Panorama Restaurant will be followed by a private tour of the exhibit Impressionist France: Visions of Nation from Le Gray to Monet. The exhibit focuses on how landscape reflects national identity and features artists Monet, Renoir, and Manet along with photographers Le Gray, Baldus, and Marville.

CAST IN BRONZE

sculptor Harry Weber Discusses monumental Bronzes

Join renowned sculptor Harry Weber for a discussion on the making of monumental bronzes, including the story of major bronze works in St. Louis. Weber is a prolific artist, with a fluid and natural style. His works are represented in museums and private collections in the United States and abroad, including the National Dog Museum and the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 2011 he was named National Sports Sculptor of the year by the U.S. Sports Academy.

The party will be held at the home of Phoebe Weil, an art conservator and art historian with an extensive background in materials and techniques. She is currently co-director of Northern Light Studio, which focuses on reconstructions of works of art based on technical and historical information.

Dinner Party at Nathalie’s Located in the urban Central West End, Nathalie’s Restaurant nevertheless manages to bring something of the country to the table. The restaurant’s owner, Nathalie Pettus, is also the owner of Overlook Farm in Clarksville, and from there the restaurant gets fresh, organic produce, beef, pork, and even tilapia. The restaurant’s chef is Jimmy Voss, formerly of Duff’s. Nathalie’s is in a 19th century mansion, with a décor that incorporates Missouri and St. Louis memorabilia from the owner’s family.

Expect an intimate dinner with fresh, natural foods that diners have described as amazing.

Classical figurative oil painter Patricia Watwood introduces you to the world of contemporary realism, including an art exhibit with slide lecture and Q&A session. Watwood’s paintings, which have been exhibited worldwide, explore narrative and mythological archetypes using the human figure. Her vitae includes studying with Jacob Collins at the Water Street Atelier, serving as adjunct professor of drawing at the New York Academy of Art, and giving lectures and workshops across the country.

Cooking Lesson and musical entertainment

Your chef, Boo Cook, and her husband, Chuck, welcome you to their Clayton home for a hands-on cooking lesson for the evening meal. Your chef has more than 40 years of experience giving private cooking lessons to enthusiastic students. Guests will prepare dinner and receive a complete set of recipes to take home. Your sous chef and his assistant for the evening will be Erik Harris and his wife, Heidi, both members of the STL Symphony and well-known to the music community.

RAGTIME, RHYTHM AND WINE

music and Wine tasting overlooking the missouri river

A perfect afternoon of music and wine features Don Franz and the St. Louis Ragtimers— a quartet well known across the region for their upbeat American music, including classic rags, folk rags of Missouri, and traditional jazz. As an added treat, Acoustik Element, an instrumental Latin-driven ensemble, will also play. With Spanish guitar and percussive grooves, Acoustik Element performs a fusion of flamenco, jazz, and rock. The group is known for adding twists to popular songs such as Carlos Santana’s Oye Como Va.

The entertainment takes place at Wine Country Gardens, a beautiful venue on 42 acres of rolling hills overlooking the Missouri River Valley. A wine tasting, buffet and cash bar will be available.

the second Half Jazz Combo at the Plaza

An exciting afternoon of jazz features The Second Half, a jazz combo founded 10 years ago by vocalist Nancy Kranzberg, The Second Half also features UMSL Chancellor Tom George as arranger and keyboardist, John Wuest on drums, Gary Drammer on trumpet, and David Troncoso on bass. The group has played throughout the region, including the St. Louis Jazz and Heritage Festival, the Sheldon Concert Hall, and St. Louis Route 66 Festival.

The party takes place in the beautiful party room at The Plaza in Clayton, a 30-story high condominium tower. Wine, soft drinks, and appetizers will be served.

THERE’S A NEW HORN IN TOWN

an evening with Karin Bliznik, stL symphony’s New Principal trumpet

In September 2013, the STL Symphony named a new principal trumpet, Karin Bliznik, ending a two-year vacancy following the departure of Susan Slaughter. This is a unique opportunity to hear Bliznik in the intimate setting of the Whittemore House at Washington University. Bliznik came to St. Louis from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, where she was associate principal trumpet. Her experience also includes playing with the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra, Chicago’s House of Blues, and Kanye West.

The Whittemore House is a charming conference center and private club for faculty, staff, and friends at Washington University. Built in 1912, the home was renovated in 2013.

idyllic Lunch in a Gothic revival Cottage

A 19th century Gothic Revival cottage overlooking the Mississippi River is the idyllic setting for an intimate catered lunch. The Greystone House in Pevely, Missouri, was built in the early to mid-1800s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With its storied history and lovely view of the barge traffic and birds on the river, it’s a perfect setting to sit back and enjoy a complete lunch and hors d’oeuvres.

The menu includes crispy asiago asparagus, mushroom croustades, grilled pork tenderloin, artichoke rice salad, marinated tomatoes, garlic cheese biscuits, and chocolate mousse cake.

AN ACOUSTIC EXPLOSION

the 442’s with special Guest erin Bode

What happens when you combine two outstanding members of the STL Symphony with two of St. Louis’ finest jazz musicians from the Erin Bode Group? You get The 442’s, an exciting acoustic instrumental quartet named for the modern standard tuning of 442 Hz. The 442’s features the innovative compositions of Adam Maness, who also plays guitar, accordion, melodica, and glockenspiel, plus Shawn Weil, violin; Bjorn Ranheim, cello; and Sydney Rodway, bass. The group combines singing, improvisation, and whistle solos in music that explores the boundaries of jazz, classical, folk, and rock.

They’ll be joined by famed jazz vocalist Erin Bode in this special evening at the Centene Center for Arts and Education. A Minnesota native and Webster University graduate, Bode has been praised for her impressive phrasing and beautiful, crystal clear voice. With the Erin Bode Group and other artists, she has played and recorded widely, bringing a fresh, subtle approach to a wide variety of material.

Celebrate Halloween with the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra (YO) and its music director, Steven Jarvi. Chamber music ensembles from the YO will present From Beyond the Grave—youth breathing new life into familiar spooky works of dead com-posers! You’ll have an opportunity to meet this next generation of musicians and Jarvi, who is also resident conductor of the STL Symphony.

DINNER AND A QUARTET

an evening of music

Washington University’s Green Hall is the venue for a lovely evening of music by a STL Symphony quartet: Morris Jacob, viola; Anne Fagerburg, Acting Assistant Principal Cello; Andrea Kaplan, Associate Principal Flute; and Erin Schreiber, Assistant Concertmaster. Opened in 2011, Green Hall is part of Washington University’s new complex of engineering buildings with the university’s classic gothic exterior.

A buffet dinner, catered by Bon Appetit, will be served, along with wine, beer, soda, and hors d’oeuvres.

stL symphony Chorus Director Gives the inside scoop

Why are choruses so important to orchestras, and how do the two work together? Amy Kaiser, director of the St. Louis Symphony Chorus since 1995, answers these and other questions in an informative talk. Kaiser has a wealth of experience, including conducting more than 50 performances with the Metropolitan Opera Guild and serving as guest conductor at Chicago’s Grant Park Festival and the Berkshire Choral Festival. In her current role, she has prepared the Chorus for performances with music directors David Robertson, Hans Vonk, and Leonard Slatkin, and for many international guest conductors.
