Rice on Wacker: “David is a coach’s son, which has helped him develop an extremely high basketball IQ. He has a great feel for the game combined with really good size and he knows how to win.”

Leon Rice is entering his fifth season as head coach of the Boise State University men’s basketball team after being named the seventh head coach in school history, March 26, 2010.

Boise State made the NCAA Tournament in 2012-13, his third season guiding the program. It was the sixth tournament appearance in school history and the program’s first at-large selection.

The Broncos are 77-54 (.588) under Rice, the best record for a head coach through his first four seasons in school history. Included were 20-win campaigns in 2010-11, 2012-13 and 2013-14, the only head coach to win at least 20 games in three of his first four years guiding the program since Boise State joined Division I in 1970-71.

Rice’s recipe for success combines an up-tempo, fast-paced offense and elite shooting. The Broncos have led their conference in scoring three of Rice’s four seasons, including pacing the Mountain West in scoring the last two seasons. The Broncos put up 76.2 points per game in 2013-14, the second-highest season average at Boise State in the last 38 years.

In 2013-14, Boise State shot 45.6 percent from the floor, 37.2 percent from beyond the arc and 74.9 percent from the free throw line. The free throw percentage is the best in school history and ranked No. 20 in the NCAA.

Those peripherals paced the Broncos to a 21-13 mark, culminating with a trip to the semifinals of the MW Championship. The Broncos fell to No. 20 New Mexico 70-67, their eighth loss by four points or fewer on the season, including four against nationally-ranked opponents. Another was a 70-66 defeat at the hands of No. 14 Iowa State in the championship game of the Diamond Head Classic to end the nonconference schedule.

The holiday tournament was one of many appearances on the national stage for the Broncos. Boise State’s game at No. 11 Kentucky was televised on ESPN, the program’s first appearance on the channel since 1999.

Among the Broncos’ nine conference wins was a 71-70 victory against New Mexico. It was Boise State’s first all-time win against the Lobos.

The Broncos led the MW in scoring average (73.2) in 2012-13, and were also one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the country, ranking 11th-nationally (.391) from beyond the arc. Boise State was also 25th-nationally in free throw percentage (.747).

2012-13 was arguably the best season in school history. The NCAA Tournament at-large selection was a prduct of 21 impressive wins. Included were a school-record 12 nonconference wins. The Broncos also posted two wins over ranked opponents on the road in 2012-13, more than Boise State had combined to win in school history prior to last season (one).

Boise State finished tied for fourth in the Mountain West - the top-rated conference in the country per the RPI. The Broncos had been predicted to finish eighth in the MW Preseason Media Poll, the third time in as many seasons under Rice that the team outperformed its predicted finish.

Boise State went 14-1 on its home floor in 2012-13, the only loss coming in overtime to league-champion New Mexico. It marked the best home record since the 1997-98 team went 13-0 and tied for the second-most wins at Taco Bell Arena all-time.

Additionally, Anthony Drmic and Derrick Marks were named All-MW Second Team, the first time since 2008 that the Broncos had multiple players garner all-league recognition.

In 2011-12, his second season with the Broncos, Rice guided the team’s ascension to the MW, which finished the season as the nation’s fifth-ranked conference in the NCAA RPI - ahead of the Pac-12 and ACC. Though young - the Broncos accumulated 51 starts by freshmen in 2011-12, a mark that shattered the previous school record of 38 set in both 1989-90 and 1993-94 - the Broncos still defeated five teams that participated in the postseason in 2011-12.

Two of the freshmen - Drmic and Marks - garnered All-MW honorable mention honors after finishing the season ranked first and second, respectively, in scoring average among league freshmen.

In 2010-11 Rice put together the finest campaign for a Boise State first-year men’s basketball head coach, one that culminated in an appearance in the conference tournament championship game and just the fourth postseason appearance in the last 17 years.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

“(Leon) Rice has done wonders in making Boise State relevant in hoops. There is no reason to believe he won’t continue to do so.” -Andy Katz, ESPN.com Sr. Writer

“I have watched Leon work over the years, and he is a great communicator, has a great eye for the game, and does a terrific job teaching the game. Leon has a great feel for players, and the fine line between technique and playing with a free mind. Players really respond well to Leon, and that is not an accident. “ -Jay Bilas, ESPN Analyst

The Broncos went 22-13 (.629) in his debut season, making Rice the winningest first-year head coach in school history. The Broncos also reached the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational and surpassed 20 wins for just the ninth time since becoming a four-year institution (1968-69).

The 22 victories are tied for the fifth-most in school history, and signified the fifth-largest turnaround all-time at Boise State.

Rice was one of 54 first-year head coaches nationally, only 14 of which reached the 20-win plateau. Five of the coaches to accomplish the feat at their respective institutions were in their first years as Division I head coaches, but of those five, only Rice inherited a team with a losing record.

After falling one game short of the NCAA Tournament, Boise State was selected to play in the CBI, and advanced all the way to the semifinals. The two wins in the postseason tied the school record, and marked the first postseason victories for the Broncos in seven years.

Under Rice, the Broncos have established a dominant home-court advantage, winning as many as 15-consecutive games, the longest streak in more than a decade. The Broncos have also posted a home winning percentage of .778 under Rice - the highest by a head coach since Boise State joined Division I in 1970-71.

Boise State’s attendance has soared during his tenure, increasing by the seventh-largest margin in the country in 2010-11, and exposure has increased to a level unparalleled in school history, with Boise State boasting a school-record 21 nationally-televised games in 2013-14.

Rice joined the Broncos after spending the previous 11 seasons at Gonzaga, where he had served as the associate head coach with the Bulldogs from 2007-10.

In his final season with the Bulldogs, Rice helped lead Gonzaga to its 10th-consecutive West Coast Conference regular season title with a conference record of 12-2 while finishing 27-7 overall. In winning its 10th-consecutive regular season title, Gonzaga moved into a tie with Connecticut (1951-60 Yankee Conference) and UNLV (1983-92 Big West) for the second-longest streak in NCAA history.

At Gonzaga, Rice worked under head coach Mark Few for 11 seasons and played a major role in the Bulldogs’ NCAA Tournament appearances in each of his seasons in Spokane. Gonzaga earned Sweet 16 berths in 2000, 2001, 2006 and 2009; and reached the second round in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2010.

Rice helped lead the Bulldogs to five top-10 appearances in the final Associated Press Poll, including a No. 3 ranking in 2004. Gonzaga also finished fifth in 2006, sixth in 2002 and 10th in both 2005 and 2009.

The Bulldogs went 291-73 in Rice’s tenure on the Gonzaga staff, including a school-record 29-4 mark in both 2002 and 2006.

Rice joined the Bulldogs from Yakima Valley College, where he served two seasons as an assistant coach and one as co-head coach with the legendary Dean Nicholson. He then served as head coach for the 1998-99 campaign. YVC went from worst to first in the debut season of the Rice-Nicholson partnership, and in 1999 YVC went 31-2 en route to capturing its fourth-straight Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) Eastern Region title. The 31 wins were a school record and came four seasons after Rice and Nicholson inherited a program which had gone 3-20 overall during the 1994-95 season. YVC went a perfect 12-0 in the NWAACC in 1999 and Rice earned his second-straight Eastern Region Coach of the Year honor.

The duo guided YVC to a 103-26 overall record and 40-8 league record in four seasons. Rice coached 18 student-athletes who went on to play basketball at four-year schools, including the Bulldogs’ Quentin Hall who was a 1999 Gonzaga senior. YVC had six players from the 1999 squad who joined four-year programs.

Rice received his bachelor’s in physical education from Washington State in 1986 and his master’s in athletic administration, management and program development from Oregon in 1991. After one year of high school coaching, he began his collegiate career as a graduate assistant coach at Oregon in 1989, and then served two seasons as a full-time assistant coach for the Ducks. He was the head assistant coach at Northern Colorado in Greeley for three seasons prior to going to YVC.

Rice and his wife, Robin, have three sons: Brock, Max and Kade.

“We have more athleticism and size than we’ve had in the past and that’s really exciting. Now it’s a matter of blending the new guys with a great group of veterans. That might take some time, especially with our difficult early schedule.” -Leon Rice

Average Attendance

SCORING LEADER: Anthony Drmic was Boise State’s leading scorer each of his first three seasons. Drmic averaged 12.0 points per game as a freshman, 17.7 as a sophomore and 15.9 as a junior. He joined Tanoka Beard (1990-93) and Abe Jackson (2000-02) as the only Broncos in school history to lead the team in scoring three seasons. Beard is the only four-time scoring leader.

DRMIC NAMED ALL-DISTRICT: Anthony Drmic was selected to the USBWA All-District VIII Team in 2013-14. District VIII encompasses all Division I schools in Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada and Montana. Drmic becomes just the third Boise State honoree in the last decade. He is the first since Reggie Larry in 2007-08 and the first Bronco junior to earn the distinction since Coby Karl in 2005-06.

UPPING THE OFFENSE: Boise State has been renowned for its offensive prowess ever since Leon Rice arrived. In Rice’s first four seasons, the Broncos have led their conference in scoring three times, including pacing the Mountain West each of the last two years. Last season the Broncos hit a Rice-era high with 76.2 points per game, up from 73.2 the year before. Last year’s scoring average was the second-highest in the last 38 years at Boise State (81.4 in 2007-08).

NEW-FOUND HEIGHT: Seven Broncos measure 6-foot-7 or taller, yet just two have played a game for Boise State. Nick Dunan (6-8) and Jake Ness (6-8) were among the tallest Broncos last season, and now have four teammates taller than them in addition to looking eye-to-eye with fellow newcomer Chandler Hutchison (6-7). Kevin Allen and Zach Haney stretch the ruler the farthest at 6-11, while David Wacker checks in at 6-10. James Webb, who redshirted in 2013-14, grew an inch last season and now stands at 6-9.

BRONCO 3-POINT BARRAGE: With Leon Rice at the helm, Boise State has become one of the top three-point shooting teams in the country in both volume and percentage. Last season the Broncos made 264 three-pointers (No. 2 in school history) shooting at a 37.2 percent clip. There were only eight games last season the Broncos made fewer than six three pointers. Nearly half the NCAA averaged less than six three pointers per game last season.

Boise State has made at least 227 three-pointers in each of Rice’s first four seasons, claiming four of the top seven single-season marks in school history.

HOLDING COURT: Boise State is 49-14 at Taco Bell Arena under head coach Leon Rice, including a 28-2 mark in nonconference games. Boise State has won 28 of its last 34 overall at home.

TAKING CHARITY: Boise State has been one of the best free throw shooting teams in the country, under Leon Rice. The Broncos have ranked in the top 25 nationally each of the last two seasons. In 2013-14, Boise State shot 74.9 percent from the strip to set a single-season school record. The mark betterd the 2012-13 team’s 74.7 clip. Three of the top five single-season free throw percentages in school history have been established during Rice’s tenure as head coach.

MW SHORT ON EXPERIENCE: There were 24 student-athletes recognized as All-Mountain West selections last season: a five-member first team, five-member second team, five-member third team and nine honorable mention choices. Only nine of those selections return to the conference this season, including a pair of Broncos. Anthony Drmic is one of two second-team All-MW honorees back this year, while Derrick Marks is one of five honorable mention recipients to return. Larry Nance Jr. (Wyoming) is the only returning first-team selection. Colorado State’s Daniel Bejarano (second team) and J.J. Avila (third team) round out the rest of the returners from the three all-conference teams.

COUNTED ON AT CRUNCH TIME: Senior Derrick Marks has made a career out of being Boise State’s go-to guy late in games. Marks has scored nearly 60 percent of his points after halftime in his career (770 points), including a staggering 69 percent as a sophomore. In 2012-13, Marks scored at least 20 points in the second half of five games. Last season he posted 39 points against Idaho, with 27 coming in the second half. Last year Marks lifted Boise State to a 91-90 overtime win agaisnt UNLV (Feb. 22). He scored all 13 Bronco points in the overtime period on 5-of-5 shooting and 2-of-2 free throws. His stepback 12-footer in the lane with 3.3 seconds left put Boise State on top for good. Marks had just four points during regulation on 2-of-8 shooting from the floor.

THOMPSON’S GROWTH: Redshirt junior Mikey Thompson was used virtually equally during his first two seasons, playing exactly 25.9 minutes per game both years. The consistency allows for a closer look at his improvement from year to year. Last season his assist average rose to 2.45 per game from 1.36 the year before. His assist:turnover ratio also improved from 0.77 to 1.76. In 2013-14, Thompson attempted 50 more free throws than the year prior and upped his percentage from 70.1 to 74.4.

DOWN THE STRETCH: Redshirt junior Mikey Thompson started the final 12 games of the season in 2013-14, and saw a staggering improvement in his three-point shooting during that time. Thompson shot 37.5 percent from three-point range in the final 12 games after shooting 23.1 percent in the first 21 games he played (missed one game due to injury).

BUILDING ON CONSISTENCY: Mikey Thompson scored in double figures 13 times last season. In Mountain West play, there were three instances Thompson hit double figures in consecutive games. However, he could not string together a third solid game on any occassion. In the three games following consecutive double-figure scoring days, Thompson scored four total points on 1-of-17 shooting.

DUNCAN A QUICK STUDY: Sophomore Nick Duncan adapted to plenty of new surroundings last season. Duncan, from Sydney, Australia, adjusted to life in college, in the United States and in the paint. His outside stroke translated immediately. The 6-8 Duncan made four three-pointers in the second game of his career. That carried on throughout the season as he shot 41 percent from deep, connecting on 41-of-100 attempts. Meanwhile, he posted a 3.97 GPA in his first year in college and the book smarts carried over to the hardwood where he learned to play inside. Duncan averaged 3.2 rebounds per game over the last 22 contests after pulling down just 1.5 boards per game in his first 12. He made his first start at New Mexico (Jan. 21) and stayed in the starting lineup for the next nine games. He set a career high with 11 rebounds at Freno State (Feb. 26). Duncan played in all 34 games and finished the season averaging 5.0 points per game in 17.1 minutes per contest.

SMALL SAMPLE SIZE: Sophomore Dezmyn Trent played 116 minutes in his debut season last year, appearing in 20 games. Trent made the most of his limited playing time, scoring 2.6 points per game and grabbing 1.6 rebounds per outing. Extrapolated over a full 40-minute game, Trent’s numbers were among the most prolific among the Broncos last season and even more so among returners.Average per 40 minutes Avg. BRONCOS SCHEDULE UP IN 2014-15: Playing a tough schedule is nothing new for Boise State under Leon Rice. In Rice’s four seasons, the Broncos have faced 17 ranked opponents. Boise State played 15 ranked opponents in the 17 years prior to Rice taking over. This season will be no different. Using last season’s final RPI, the average ranking of Boise State’s 27 known Divisoin I opponents is 140.1, ranking third in the Mountain West. The Broncos’ also rank third in average RPI of nonconference opponents at 150.6. (Excludes potential matchups in tournaments and Abilene Christian which did not qualify for the RPI last season as a reclassifying program).

ALL-MW AWARDS: Anthony Drmic and Ryan Watkins were named All-Mountain West Second Team. Derrick Marks earned honorable mention accolades. It was the second-straight year two Broncos were named to the second team. Drmic repeated the honor and it was the first-career conference award for Watkins.

DRMIC NAMED ALL-DISTRICT: Anthony Drmic was selected to the USBWA All-District VIII Team.

SIZZLING START: Boise State won its first eight games of a season for the first time in school history. It was the third time the Broncos started a season 6-0 (1987-88 and 2010-11), but neither of those squads won its next game. Leon Rice is the only Boise State head coach to win the first six games of two different seasons.

THE BEST OF THE BOARDS: Ryan Watkins led the nation in offensive rebounds at 5.0 per game and 170 total, putting him in elite company in recent NCAA history. Watkins was just the sixth player with 170 offensive rebounds in a season since 1996-97. He joined the select company of Kenneth Faried, Paul Millsasp, DeJuan Blair, Kevin Thompson and Quentin Richardson. Four of the previous five were NBA Draft picks.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Ryan Watkins was one of 14 Division I players to average a double-double last season (11.9 points and 10.6 rebounds per game). Watkins was the first player in school history to average a double-double over the course of more than 30 games and the third to do so for an entire season. It was just the fourth time a Boise State player averaged double-figure rebounds for an entire season, and it had only happened once previously in Boise State’ Division I era (1970-71). Steve Wallace averaged 11.0 rebounds per game in 1971-72. Bill Otey averaged 17.3 in 1968-69 and 13.0 in 1969-70. Each scored in double figures those seasons and are the only Broncos prior to Watkins to average a double-double at the end of a season.

STARTING HIS OWN CLUB: In Mountain West games last year, Ryan Watkins scored 244 points and 225 rebounds. Watkins became the first player in Mountain West history to score 200 points and pull down 200 rebounds in a conference season.

MW DOUBLE-DOUBLE HISTORY: Ryan Watkins had 17 double-doubles last season, including 12 in MW play. Watkins’ 17 overall led the conference and ranked No. 8 in the NCAA. His 12 in conference games match Kawhi Leonard’s single-season record for conference-only games. Of his 23 career double-doubles, 15 came during MW games, tied for fifth most in conference history.

BROPLEH’S BENCH PRODUCTION: Senior Thomas Bropleh gave the Broncos a spark off the bench for much of the season. Bropleh’s exploits led to him getting the call to start the last three games of the regular season. He responded to the first start (March 1, at Wyoming) by matching his career high with 20 points. The senior sparkplug gave the Broncos a shot in the arm when they trailed 21-4 early against the Cowboys. He scored 13 of the next 15 for the Broncos, hitting five-consecutive shots, including a trio of three-pointers. Bropleh ha scored in double figures in 10 of the final 14 games, including the first such three-game streak of his career (Jan. 29-Feb. 5). He poured in 41 points in those three games, shooting 15-for-22 from the floor, including 7-of-12 from three-point range. After being shutout at Utah State (Feb. 8), he came back with 14 against New Mexico (Feb. 12) and 18 at Colorado State (Feb. 18), on 7-of-9 shooting. Bropleh played in 127 games as a Bronco, hitting double figures in 26 of them. Twelve came last season, including those 10 in the final 14 games.

TOUGH SLATE IN ‘13-’14: Boise State’s game against No. 5 San Diego State (Feb. 5) was the highest-ranked opponent since playing at No. 4 Kansas, Nov. 20, 2000. It was the Broncos’ fourth game against a top-15 opponent this season, the most in a single season in school history. The Jan. 8 game at San Diego State marked the third game agaisnt a top-15 opponent for Boise State in a one-month span. The semifinal game against New Mexico in the MW Championship is the fifth ranked opponent of the season. The Broncos have played at least three ranked teams in each of Leon Rice’s first four seasons. Prior to Rice’s arrival, only twice had Boise State played three games against ranked teams in the same season.

FINDING THE OPEN MAN: Boise State had a season-high 21 assists (on 29 made shots) at Colorado State (Feb. 18). Over the last three seasons, the Broncos are 25-1 when they have at least 15 assists.

HITTING A HUNDRED: Boise State scored at least 100 points in three of its first four games. Bose State has only hit triple digits four times in a season once (1974-75). The Broncos have scored at least 100 points 33 times in school history, eight of which have come under Leon Rice.

LIVING AT THE LINE: Derrick Marks made a school-record 21 free throws against Idaho (Nov. 27). Marks broke the previous record (20) on 23 attempts, the most by a Bronco since Tanoka Beard’s school-record 25 attempts Dec. 29, 1992, against George Mason. It is the most made free throws in a game in the NCAA this season...Boise State was 34-of-44 as a team in the game against the Vandals, the most makes and attempts since the Broncos were 35-of-55 against Cal Poly Jan. 31, 1995 (still the school record for attempts).
