DEADLINE FOR ALL KOURIER ARTICLES, PICTURES & SUBMISSIONS IS THE FRIDAY AFTER THE STATED MEETING

Nobles and Ladies,

Your Chief Rabban and I accompanied by our Ladies attended Imperial Session the beginning of July. Also in attendance were Louis Test and his Lady Joni and Grand Master John Buffington and his Lady Debby. As usual the days were intense however we had a lot of fun after the sessions. It’s always fun and educational to meet with our counter-parts and brothers from all over the world. The per-capita raise was voted down but I’m sure it will raise its ugly head again in the future. If anyone is interested in any particular call item please contact me as I have all results available.

The Rocky Mountain Conference was very successful. Thank you to all those who tended bar and spent time representing Kerak.Lady Judy’s Car Show and Shine was rained out on the 20th but thanks to many helpful and supportive people we were able to reschedule for Friday the 25th. Could have had a little less wind but it didn’t rain and we were able to raise $2000.00 for the Hospital. If you were unable to make it you missed a great evening.

The Hot August’s Nights Parade was a blast as always and the weather couldn’t have been any better. The oasis was small but the 10 or so of us that attended thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and the food was great. I can’t tell you how fantastic the O.V. to the Karavaners was. The food and company was outstanding. You’ll soon see me proudly sporting my new belt buckle. Lady Judy was thrilled with the check presented to her for her project, the Pediatric Burn Unit. What a fabulous day! Thank you to all.

If you receive this before the Pote’s Ball and you haven’t yet make a reservation there may still be time. Be sure and call Howard at the office and we’ll see what we can do. Ladies, this will give you a chance to bring out all the bling as it’s a Black Tie affair. Our Official Visit to Elko is the 28th and 29th. There will also be a Ceremonial and we will participate in their parade with an oasis afterwards. There may still be rooms available so contact Howard or me if you have any questions.

And my Henry Ford quote for this month, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.”

Yours in the Faith,

Gene

And Lady Judy says, “Thank you soooo much for all of the help and donations for our Kerak Car Show. Not only was it great fun but we raised over $2000.00 for the Hospital. And just to follow up on last month, may God help those people who drink those six glasses of water. The Mississippi River looked really dirty to me.

Chief Rabbans’ Letter

Shrine Protocol Corner

SHRINE PRAYERThe prayer at Shriner’s events is non-denomination. During the prayer, a noble wearing a fez should remove it and hold it over his heart with his right hand while creating the Sign of the Order as a sign of respect to the Grand Architect. At the end of the prayer, the re-sponse is, “So mote it be,” which is another way of saying, “The will of God be done.”

GREETINGS & SALUTATIONSSince 1872, Shriners have used Arabic saultations. The appropriate salutation among members of the Shriners fraternity is, “Es selamu aleikum,” (pronounced AH sell-AHM uh-LAKE-um) which is Arabic for, “Peace be on you.” The proper response is, “Aleikum es selamu,” (pronounced uh-LAKE-um AH sell- AHM-uh) which means, “On you be the peace.”

Greetings Ladies and Nobles,

At the time of this writing june is almost over, We had 2 parades, a Fathers day breakfast and the June Stated meeting. It was billed as Hawaiian night, and had several very colorful shirts and dresses. There were 2 drawings, a 50 / 50 to benefit the clowns unit, and the 1st lady project had 2 really nice baskets, Cody and friends prepared a very good Hawaiian meal.

The 1st parade was the Carson Valley Days, in which we took 1st place in service club category. We had a Shrine Hospital SUV, Old ambulance, CV Shrine club float, several Tin Lizzies and other types of small cars. After the parade there was a Great BBQ and Potes official visit to the CV Shrine club. About 45 Nobles, .Ladies and children attended.,this was held at Bob and Lynn Anderson beautiful home, Thanks again for hosting this event again this year.

The 2nd parade was the Reno Rodeo Parade, and we had the Shrine Hospital SUV, Old ambulance, several tin Lizzies and other types of small cars, Old Fire truck and some clowns, also Lots of Fun. There was an oasis afterward ‘s at the shrine, good food and friends. The Wrecking Crew and Stagecraft once again put out a grand breakfast for Fathers Day, There were also lots of really nice door prizes, GREAT JOB GUYS!!

On the 4th of July Kerak Shrine will be in 2 parades, Virginia City and Fallon, I hope everyone has a great time. Gene and Judy Fox, and Cindy and I will be in Minneapolis, Mn. For the International Shrine convention. See you all when we get back.Peace be with you.

The evening of May first was a beautiful evening and the “dirty dozen” enjoyed it out on the patio at the La Posada Real on Longley Lane with their monthly meeting. (Yep, there were twelve of us there.) The only disturbing factor was the Director trying to get a few points across to the members.Discussing the upcoming cooking for Father’s Day consumed most of the meeting. With the political correctness that abounds, we also had to discuss Mother’s day as well. Thanks to Jim Lind for getting our Potentate’s banner produced.

One point that was made was the fact that we would participate in the parade and celebration in Silver Springs which was on the 10th of last month. We’re looking forward to the Reno Rodeo Parade on the 21st and the 4th of July parade in Fernley. See you there!

First Lady’s Project

Life-saving, life-changing healthcare Since April 1997, the Shriners

regional pediatric medical center in Sacramento has been making dreams come true for children and families faced with orthopedic conditions, spinal cord injuries and burns. More than 53,000 children have sought the specialized pediatric care that is the hallmark of Shriners Hospital and all services are provided without regard for a family’s ability to pay. While children come for different reasons, all are welcomed into an interdisciplinary community of care that nurtures the patient and family in mind, body and spirit.

Pediatric Burn Program Parents of children who have suffered a burn

injury turn to Shriners Hospitals for Children® – Northern California for the gift of hope. In most cases, the referral for care is comes directly from emergency first responders or the team at a medical trauma center or emergency department. Once the child and the family arrive, the seeds of hope begin to germinate in the hands of the expert team at Shriners Hospitals for Children® – Northern California. Our burn surgeons lead a multidisciplinary team focused on maximizing the cosmetic and functional outcomes of children. The team includes reconstructive plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists and psychologists, burn technicians, occupational and physical therapists, nutritionists, social workers, pharmacists, child life specialists, school teachers, and orthotists and prosthetists. All care includes aggressive therapy and emotional support – both for the child and his or her family.

During 2013, the Pediatric Burn Program admitted more than 350 new patients, half of whom were admitted for critical, life-threatening injuries. Close to 700 surgeries were performed by the team and more than 13,000 occupational and physical therapy treatments were completed. Overall total patient days in the Pediatric Burn Program were up 9.0%.

"The advanced care we provide to children cannot be topped. Not only do the doctors

provide expert care, but there is a large team that provides all that is necessary for

children to go back home in the best shape possible." -- David Greenhalgh, MD, FACS

First Lady of KERAK for 2014 Each burn injury is unique with some

costing in the hundreds of thousands of dollars to treat. The average cost for a day of nursing care in the ICU is $6,500, not including costs for surgery, pharmacy, nutritional services, or occupational and physical therapy. The promise of a life filled with hope is priceless and worthy of personal and community investment.

Impact of Your Investment Each dollar contributed to the First Lady of

KERAK project is an investment in real hope. Every contributor can be proud of providing children suffering with burn injuries with everything they need to return and stay home, with their families, and to return to the real job of every child – to strive for a future of independence and achievement.

Daughters of the Nile

There have been some sad moments and happy moments in July. The saddest moments were when we had to say good bye to three of our members, Rita Stone, Dallas Block and Dorothy Smith. These ladies were loyal members and they will be missed. Our happy moment in July was when we had our annual Ace’s Baseball night. We had a great turn out and it’s always more fun when your team wins! Looking to August, at the request of our Ladies of the Household in Elko Nile Club, we are changing the date of our Nile Official Visitation to the Elko Nile Club from

August 9th & 10th to August 28 & 29th to coincide with the Shriners Official Visitation of the Elko Shrine Club. So if you have a copy of our calendar, please note the change in dates. This visitation to Elko will be somewhat different, something we’ve never done before and should be a lot of fun. We are planning a “luau/bar-b-que” for September, ribs and the works. If you are interested, please call me at 775-424-6454 for details. Thank you, Carol Hawkins, Queen Ammon-Ra Temple No. 56, Daughters of the Nile, Reno Nevada

Session in Omaha and had a wonderful time! Our temple was honored at Supreme Session by receiving 6 appointments: one Supreme Officer, one committee appointment, one ambassador appointment and three flag escort appointments.

Additionally, Ammon-Ra was in first place for the most miles driving patients, and came in third for the most sewing hours. I hope that

Kerak is proud of Ammon-Ra….we are!

Also, the Supreme Queen Margaret Ann Risk presented to the Imperial Shrine two checks, one for more than $1,000,000 million dollars and one for more than $500,000 thousand dollars. Additionally, the value of the items that are donated from Nile ladies sewing and collecting (toys, can tabs, etc.) equal to more than $1,000,000 million dollars. This brings the grand total of the Nile donation to Imperial Shrine more than $3,100,000 million dollars in cash and donations for the Shriners Children’s Hospital for the year 2014. ISN’T THAT WONDERFUL! I am sorry to announce that I had to cancel the Shriners Appreciation Party we had scheduled for June 22nd. We will still honoring you all by having a fun picnic later in the summer.

Sincerely,

Carol Hawkins, Queen Ammon-Ra No. 56, Daughters of the Nile

Membership Challenge

Membership Petition

Illustrious Sir, Jim Paullo, P.P. 2006, threw down the gauntlet at the January meeting to his fellow Nobles! He has graciously offered to pay the initiation fee for the first 20 Candidates that turn in a signed petition to Howard at the Temple. Since then 29 members have been elected and 10 more spots were added by our gracious members.

“By” Sprenger has contributed to the challenbe by sponsoring 10 new nobles. (1 being used for a peti-tion to be read at September stated meeting turned in by Bill Earnhardt) leaving 9 spots open.

So, the challenge is there. How fast can we fill ‘em.

Will you be the next Noble to bring in a new member in 2014.

Golf

A Social Club That Plays GolfMonthly Luncheon/Tournament Meeting: Thursday, July 10th. Our luncheon meeting this month was held in the renovated 19th Hole at Lakeridge Golf Course - good turnout, good service and good food. We discussed the schedule in detail for the rest of the season and John stated the Potentate would make his annual Kerak Golf Club visit on the second day of the club championship tournament at Redhawk.

Scuba Club Interest

A Social Club That Goes Deep

After talking to several Nobles there seems to be a bit of interest in a club here in Reno, NV.

Following the meal we played golf on the well-maintained Lakeridge course. The winner was Frank Omboli with a net 73 followed by Dave Darm, Jorge Pineiro and Tom Buntin in the next three places. Frank Omboli was a winner again by being Closest-to-the-Hole on both the designated par 3 holes. On Thursday, June 19th we played our scheduled monthly tournament on the beautiful and challenging Dayton Valley golf course. Of the 16 players, Klaus Wohlgemuth was

the winner with Larry Snearly, Dan Venters and Ed Nelson in second, third and fourth places. Closest-to-the-Hole winners were Arnold Etcheberry and Jorge Pineiro.Frank Omboli and Dave Darm are tied for first place in our Club Point System with John Reed, Arnold Etcheberry and Larry Snearly following closely behind. Winner at the end of our season is designated as Golfer of the Year and will have his name engraved on a plaque at the Kerak temple.

Salt Lake City Hospital ReportBy Bob Pohlman

Salt Lake City Hospital had a re-markable first several months in 2014 despite their setbacks. April was their most productive month reported so far in terms of surgical output. Despite a 40% reduction in staff physician availability due to illness, SLC Hospital has only seen a 12.7% decrease in operations overall and only a 3.5% decrease in outpa-tient surgeries. Physician clinic visits are only down 1.2%. New patient referrals are up 20%. Therapy visits

are up 2% and orthotic production is up 12%.

SLC Hospital cost per ad-justed discharge is the lowest in the system. The first quarter of the year the hospital was the #1 hospital in the system regarding operating costs covered by third party revenue. The hospital was approved to remodel a radiology room when other hospitals were denied.

SLC Hospital was given the budget for additional physician ser-

vices. A study has been approved to assess further needs in donor devel-opment. A regional public relations program was announced, which will divide the system into three regions. A new regional director of informa-tion management has been hired and will be based in SCL. The hospital went live with bar code administra-tion and medication reconciliation and plans are in place for go-live with the new patient portal and anes-thesia documentation this month.

BUY YOUR GROCERIES AT SAVE MART AND

HELP FUND THE TEMPLEKerak Shrine has been accepted into the S.H.A.R.E.S. fundraising program. They have sent us plastic cards to be used at Save-mart and Lucky stores. Twice a year they will issue a check to Kerak Shrine for approximately 3% of our eli-gible purchases. I know that this has been a good fundraiser for Ben Ali. They have been participating for some time now. The cards will be available at our stated meetings and in the office. If anyone is unable to pick one up please give a call to Howard in the office or myself and we will mail them out. All you have to do is present your card to the cashier prior to payment. It doesn’t cost you anything but will earn money for your Temple. The card is issued to the organization and no personal information is needed or stored. Anyone that shops can use the card to earn S.H.A.R.E.S. points so we can share the cards with family and friends. For additional information you can contact me or visit the website at http://www.savemart.com/. Please help us to make this a successful fund raiser for Kerak Temple.

Provost Marshalls

Provost MarshalLost, but not forgotten. The Pro-vost Marshal has been in limbo for a while. Well it is time to come to life again. We are starting with the annual Provost Marshal family and friend picnic on September 14, 2014. Happy hour at 5:00 (BYOB) and

food from the Bar-B-Q of steaks, chicken and baked potatoes at 6:00 pm. Soft drinks will be available.

The picnic will again be at the Pote’s place, 1265 S. Marsh Avenue, Reno. We will need reservations so you don’t end up with a hot dog. Call me at 846-2140 or Potentate Gene Fox at 786-3928. If you could bring a salad or dessert it will be appreciated. Lady Judy will let you know which we need. We will also have a short business meeting with the election of new officers. Please come, enjoy the fellowship, good food and get the Provost Marshal Unit back on track.

The Unit is financially sound and has always been a needed support for the circus and caring for the young ones who need it. We need your help as a member or officer. I will propose quarterly meetings before or after the stated Shrine meetings and changing the dues to $20.00 with $10.00 for the Unit and $10.00 for the Sacra-mento Children’s Hospital.

I will again run for Director and hope I can count on your support. The Unit has a long history of good work and it would be a real loss to see it lost. I have a new email: [email protected] or [email protected] if you want to send me an email.
