Hymn: Bright the cloud and bright the glory

1. Bright the cloud and bright the glory, brighter far than mere sun's rays, opening up a glimpse of heaven to disciples' awestruck gaze: power past their comprehension, splendour too profound for praise. All was changed, all was changed; and they would never be the same. 2. Bright the cloud but dark the glory wrought by human enterprise, opening wide with awful terror stark new worlds before our eyes: power grasped but far from mastered, knowledge keen but not yet wise. All has changed, all has changed, and we shall never be the same.

3. From the cloud and from the glory human need brought Jesus down: down to death, then from death rising to receive a victor's crown. Lead us, Christ, to prize compassion more than might, wealth, or renown. Help us change, help us change, that we may never be the same.

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. Greeting: The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)

Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN. The Summary of the Commandments:

‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Kyrie eleison (How Setting)

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you ,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution {Celebrant}

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day O God, your Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread: open the eyes of our faith, that we may see him in his redeeming work; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from CEV

First Reading: Acts 2.14a, 36-41 14 Peter stood with the eleven apostles and spoke in a loud and clear voice to the crowd: Friends and everyone else living in Jerusalem, listen carefully to what I have to say! 36 Everyone in Israel should then know for certain that God has made Jesus both Lord and Christ, even though you put him to death on a cross. 37 When the people heard this, they were very upset. They asked Peter and the other apostles, “Friends, what shall we do?” 38 Peter said, “Turn back to God! Be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins will be forgiven. Then you will be given the Holy Spirit. 39 This promise is for you and your children. It is for everyone our Lord God will choose, no matter where they live.” 40 Peter told them many other things as well. Then he said, “I beg you to save yourselves from what will happen to all these evil people.” 41 On that day about three thousand believed his message and were baptized. Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 116.1-4, 11-18 1 I love the Lord, because he heard my voice:

the voice of my supplication; 2 Because he inclined his ear to me:

in the day that I called to him. 3 The cords of death encompassed me; the snares of the grave took hold on me:

I was in anguish and sorrow. 4 Then I called upon the name of the Lord:

‘O Lord, I beseech you, deliver me!’ 11 How shall I repay the Lord:

for all his benefits to me? 12 I will take up the cup of salvation:

and call upon the name of the Lord. 13 I will pay my vows to the Lord:

in the presence of all his people. 14 Grievous in the sight of the Lord:

is the death of his faithful ones. 15 O Lord, I am your servant, your servant and the child of your handmaid:

you have unloosed my bonds. 16 I will offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving:

and call upon the name of the Lord. 17 I will pay my vows to the Lord:

in the presence of all his people, 18 In the courts of the house of the Lord:

even in your midst, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR

LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. The Lord be with you

AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 24 beginning at the 13th verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. 13 That same day two of Jesus' disciples were going to the village of Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 As they were talking and thinking about what had happened, 15 Jesus came near and started walking along beside them. 16 But they did not know who he was. 17 Jesus asked them, “What were you talking about as you walked along?” The two of them stood there looking sad and gloomy. 18 Then the one named Cleopas asked Jesus, “Are you the only person from Jerusalem who didn’t know what was happening there these last few days?” 19 “What do you mean?” Jesus asked. They answered: Those things that happened to Jesus from Nazareth. By what he did and said he showed that he was a powerful prophet, who pleased God and all the people. 20 Then the chief priests and our leaders had him arrested and sentenced to die on a cross. 21 We had hoped that he would be the one to set Israel free! But it has already been three days since all this happened. 22 Some women in our group surprised us. They had gone to the tomb early in the morning, 23 but did not find the body of Jesus. They came back, saying that they had seen a vision of angels who told them that he is alive. 24 Some men from our group went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said. But they didn’t see Jesus either. 25 Then Jesus asked the two disciples, “Why can’t you understand? How can you be so slow to believe all that the prophets said? 26 Didn’t you know that the Messiah would have to suffer before he was given his glory?” 27 Jesus then explained everything written about himself in the Scriptures, beginning with the Law of Moses and the Books of the Prophets.[a] 28 When the two of them came near the village where they were going, Jesus seemed to be going farther.29 They begged him, “Stay with us! It’s already late, and the sun is going down.” So Jesus went into the house to stay with them. 30 After Jesus sat down to eat, he took some bread. He blessed it and broke it. Then he gave it to them.31 At once they knew who he was, but he disappeared. 32 They said to each other, “When he talked with us along the road

Page 11: 2014 05 04 10am sheet family

11

and explained the Scriptures to us, didn’t it warm our hearts?” 33 So they got right up and returned to Jerusalem. The two disciples found the eleven apostles and the others gathered together. 34 And they learned from the group that the Lord was really alive and had appeared to Peter. 35 Then the disciples from Emmaus told what happened on the road and how they knew he was the Lord when he broke the bread. Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

Final Hymn: Think of a world without any flowers

1. Think of a world without any flowers, think of a wood without any trees, think of a sky without any sunshine, think of the air without any breeze: we thank you, Lord, for flowers and trees and sunshine; we thank you, Lord, and praise your holy name.

2. Think of a world without any people, think of a street with no-one living there, think of a town without any houses, no-one to love and nobody to care: we thank you, lord, for families and friendships; we thank you, lord, and praise your holy name.

3. Think of a world without any worship, think of a God without his only Son, think of a cross without a resurrection only a grave and not a victory won: we thank you, Lord, for showing us our Saviour; we thank you, Lord, and praise your holy name.

4. Thanks to our Lord for being here among us, thanks be to him for sharing all we do, thanks for our church and all the love we find here, thanks for this place and all its promise true: we thank you, Lord, for life in all its richness; we thank you, Lord, and praise your holy name.

From Fr Graham: Are you as sick and tired of all the pre – budget chatter that goes on in the media? I am constantly disappointed at the shallowness of much of our political debate. As a community we should look to our governments to set policy priorities for health, welfare, education etc and set an appropriate Budget to meet those priorities. That will mean the taxation rates have always to be under review and adjusted to meet the costs of meeting those priorities. We should be challenging the status quo that sees this media driven shallow argument. As Christians we should always be seeking the “Common Good” - of course we will have differences of opinion, but we should not be afraid of rational debate these matters. As we seek to “love our neighbor……” we should always look to the good of all. Reading through Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5 -7)is a good place to seek the mind of God for these things; Jesus words will challenge us and perhaps even change us. In his weekly letter to the Clergy the Archbishop finished with this important paragraph: “Finally I want to encourage your support of asylum seekers and refugees, those newly arrived into Australia or housed in detention centres here or offshore. In the lead up to Easter all the Archbishops and the Bishop of Tasmania jointly signed a statement expressing our profound disquiet at the policy of keeping asylum seeker children in detention. We said that: “These children are innocent victims of tragic circumstances. …. those who flee from desperate circumstances by boat should not be punished by prolonged detention whether in Australia, Nauru or Manus Island. They are not the people smugglers. They are people made in the image of God, who deserve respect from all Australians, but especially our Government and its agencies. “ This matter has been picked up by several media outlets and will, I pray, continue to be held up to public scrutiny until wisdom and compassion prevail.” Please reflect on this statement and consider your response to this important issue. Easter Blessings Fr Graham Trading Table TODAY. Chorister induction for new choristers: May 24, during the 10am service. Please come and help welcome our most recent choristers.
