TIDEWATER KNITTING GUILD OF VIRGINIA February 2014 A message from our president Let the fun begin. The board met in January to make plans for 2014, and I have to say it was a productive meeting. Some of the highlights from the meeting include changes to the knitting contest, some events coming up quickly, a budget and programs for the year. We hit the road running in February with our meeting on the 3rd, hockey night on the 8th and our Charity Knit -In on the 22nd. The program for the February meeting will be “Caring for Your Hand Knits.” I will collect money at the meeting for tickets to the hockey game for anyone interested in going. Families are welcome; tickets are $14.50 each. Our Charity Knit -In Potluck will be at Debbie Goodman’s house from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you plan on attending, email Debbie at [email protected] to get directions. More information will be given at the meeting on our focus group. The board voted to have the knitting contest again this year with the sock and baby category being dropped and a novice category added. Knitters who have been knitting five or fewer years can enter the novice category with their choice of a project that they have done in the last year. We also will establish a standard scoring system that will be published ahead of time and used by the judges for judging. We hope these changes will encourage more people to enter the contest. If the participation rate remains low, then the Guild probably will drop the contest. The proposed budget is included in this newsletter and will be voted on at the February meeting. If you have any questions, please present them at the meeting or email me at [email protected]. A list of Guild events for the year also is included in the newsletter. So is a schedule of proposed programs, and you will notice there are several blank spaces for a presenter’s name. Let me know where you can help. The success of the year depends on the eorts of the group, so please do your part! Please bring your items to be donated locally to the next meeting and we’ll see that they are distributed. If you have items that you have given to an out-of-town charity, you should notate that on the charity log. Remember to sign the charity knitting log each month when you attend our meetings or email me at [email protected]. Thank you.

2014 is “The Year of Giving” at The Yarn Club By Andrea Riddle ! After almost three years of growth, we want to give back to our community of fiber artists. We were inspired by the generous donations to St. Mary’s Home by the Guild members in December. There are so many folks in need, so many charities and so much stash yarn. There must be a way to help out, have a good time and maybe learn a thing or two along the way. In 2014, we are planning several opportunities to give back through our crafts. The best part is our rewards with coupons and more.!! We have a big drive coming up this February for the Virginia Beach SPCA. Four Legged Love is a month-long donation drive to help benefit local pets in need. The Yarn Club is encouraging customers and community members to bring donations to the store by Feb. 28. This includes cleaning supplies, food, ! continued on page 4!

Spring is here! Well, almost. Spring yarns are arriving every day. Anzula delighted us with Breeze, a new silk and linen lace yarn. At 750 yards, it glides through your needles effortlessly. Cascade brings us Ultra Pima Light, a 100 percent fingering cotton. This yarn is great for knitting or crocheting baby items. New colors of Madelinetosh are due in by mid-February. Expect to see the shelves full of sock yarn, sport yarns and a few other wonderful additions. Speaking of wonderful additions, TYC is expanding our line of fiber for our spinners. Frabjous Fibers has a luxury line that is sure to please the fanciest fingers. Opulence will glide by with a touch of Camel and Silk. Oooh, la, la! New classes and KALs have been added. We are back with Dark & Stormy from Baby Cocktails. Join us on Wednesdays to learn to knit for fit. No fee, just buy your yarn from TYC.

February celebrates LOVE. Who better to love than our four-legged friends at the VBSPCA. Join us Saturday, Feb. 15, to get a kiss (or lick) from one of our furry friends. They will be at the shop from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Bring in items to donate all month and receive a coupon for a discount on yarn. What could be better, help an animal and get a coupon! 2014 kicks off our Charity Drive. Give back this year with items made from the heart. Knit for Toasty Toes, VBSPCA, St. Mary’s and a host of other wonderful causes. Drop off your knitted or crochet items and receive a coupon at TYC. Happy Fur and Fiber, Andrea

“Year of Giving,” continued from page 3 !pet toys and gift certificates. Also, on Feb. 15, some of our furry friends will visit The Yarn Club with the staff and volunteers of the VBSPCA. Take some time out of your busy weekend to cuddle with some yarn and a cat or dog or two. We’re also asking our crafters to knit or crochet up some love for these animals. We have free patterns for toys and blankets.!! This spring, we will join Operation Toasty Toes to warm soldiers’ hearts, since we are a military community. The organization accepts knitted socks, slippers, headbands, afghans, fingerless mitts and more items for wounded soldiers who are on their way home. “We know that our military transport planes are not commercial airliners and can be quite cold. All our lap robes and larger afghan blankets have tags attached to let the wounded know how much we appreciate their service,” says Patricia-Lee Pirog, chairwoman of Chapter 7 of Operation Toasty Toes. !! Another effort we are looking into is through Any Soldier, which sends care packages to military overseas. The Yarn Club hopes to put together care packages for our female soldiers. They work hard and could use some items knit specifically for them, like wash cloths or felted bowls. Stay tuned.!! There’s always the ever-popular need for newborn hats. Locally, Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters accepts newborn and preemie hats. Sherry Brooks at the Child Life office says these items are always needed. The Yarn Club will continuously collect these items at our store and bring them to the children at CHKD.!! If you love to knit accessories, another way to give back is through the ongoing effort to support St. Mary’s Home. The items must be washable in hot water, and the brighter, the better. You may continue to bring the items to the Guild meeting, or drop them off at TYC to collect your reward coupon.!! As you can see, the Tidewater Knitting Guild’s giving spirit has rubbed off on all of us at The Yarn Club. In addition to working with these organizations, we want to offer more than just a pat on the back for lending a helping hand. The Yarn Club will be giving away a coupon for your knitted or crocheted item(s) donated at our store. The more you bring in, the greater the discount on your next yarn purchase. Let’s join our needles and hooks together to make a positive influence and change in our community. !! For more information on these charities and pattern links, see page 6 of this newsletter.!

Class Descriptions

Homework and Materials list will be sent later Cast On and Bind Off Methods and When to Use Them with Cheryl Moore Ever been baffled by what type of Cast On or Bind Off to use for a project? Patterns generally say CO X number of stitches or BO loosely. That doesn't always work well! Have you ever been disappointed by the CO or BO you've used? Many knitters use only one method of Cast On and it's usually the first one you learned. Same thing when Binding Off. But there are actually several to choose from. This is a workshop where you will learn about and practice several different methods and why you would use them. Reading Knitting Charts with Linda Johnson Using charts for knitting can be confusing. You see 2 or 3 on  one  pattern  page  and  it’s  hard  to  figure  out  which  one  to  use  when. In  this  class  we’ll  look  at  some of the different charts like line by line, every other line, in the round.    You’ll  practice  a  few and learn how to translate each one. Ravelry with Chuck Dunn In its simplest form Ravelry is an online community for knitters, crocheters and other fiber fans. It is a combination of a social networking site, a place to share information about patterns and yarn, a forum and a place to keep records about your stash, your needle collection, your current projects and more. Because Ravelry encompasses such a large scope it's practically impossible to go over everything it has to offer in one day. In our class we will review several areas that will be of most benefit to you right away. We'll go a little deeper into three areas...creating your own project page, how to find a particular pattern and uses for a specific yarn. You will need to bring a laptop or tablet that is capable of connecting to the Wi-Fi (wireless network) provided by the hotel in order to connect with the Ravelry website. Included in the class will be a DVD. Digital copies of all handout materials used during the class will be on the disk, as well as videos of what was covered in class. The Mobius Cast on with Debbie Henderson A Mobius scarf or project is a continuous loop with a twist. Learn a true Mobius cast-on, which gives a twist and when knitting grows from the center out. You will need at least 40-inch circular needles in size 7, 8, 9, or 10 and DK or worsted weight yarn and stitch markers. Reading Your Knitting with Sue Von Ohlsen To be a successful knitter you must be able to identify each stitch you are knitting into. This is especially true for lace knitting and pattern work. This class will teach you to recognize each stitch and keep your patterning lined up. If you are a knitter who counts your stitches to see if you made a mistake you have probably discovered that doesn't always work. This method does. We call it "reading your knitting" because that is exactly what you will do as you work each stitch. This is also a good method for figuring out where you left off in your pattern if you forget what row you are on. People have told me this is a LIFE CHANGING class! Fixing Mistakes Several Rows Down with Sue Von Ohlsen You are admiring your beautiful knitting when you suddenly spot a mistake you made several hours ago. You don't want to rip all that work out. What to do? Fix it from the top down! You will learn to drop your stitches down, fix the error, and pick the stitches back up. We'll start with very basic mistakes and work up to fixing cables that have been turned the wrong way and fixing lace. Using Magic Loop with Cindy Call Magic Loop is a great way to knit in the round with only one long circular. No double points or having to have 2 circulars of the same size. You will cast on and begin knitting a hat using the magic loop method. We'll also look at how to use Magic Loop to knit a sleeve on a top down sweater and knit toe up socks. Please bring a Size 8, 40 inch long circular needle and about 100 yards of worsted weight yarn for the hat. Seaming and Finishing Techniques with Cheryl Moore We'll talk about how seaming can decide if you will wear a garment or not and the importance of blocking your work. You'll learn, explore and practice different methods of seaming using knitting needles, a yarn needle and even a crochet hook. The finishing of a garment or project can actually make or break the over-all look of the work. We'll discuss and learn different edging techniques both knitted and crocheted. Latvian Braids with Chuck Dunn Latvian Braids... A beautiful, intricate looking, yet simple to create multicolor braid that can be added at a host of knitting projects. Learn to create left and right slanting braids and place them at the cuff of mittens, the brim of a hat, or in the ribbing of a sweater.

Page 10: 2014 02 tkgv newsletter

Go with simple one round braids or You can "stack" then one atop the other to obtain amazing effects. Change the direction of the slants on one layer, reverse the colors and the direction of the slant on the second layer and then finish with a repeat of the first braid. You'll be amazed at the results. Learn to do multicolored cast on's and Magic Loop. Then using those skills begin to explore a new world of embellishment with Latvian Braids. You'll even receive a DVD with all the course materials and video of Chuck actually creating a Latvian braid as a teaching aid.
