WEEK 6 JOURNAL (SUMMARY AND NOTES ON NEW CONCEPTS LEARNED FROM DIFFERENT CASE STUDIES)
Symbolic Representations and Abbreviations of Elements:
UB – Universal Beam
LVL – Laminated Veneer Lumber
PFC – Parallel Flange Channel
UC – Universal Column
CHS/ RHS/ SHS – Circular/ Rectangular/ Square Hollow Section
CRS – Distance from Centre (spacing)
W Shape – wide flange
WT Shape – T cut from W Shape
Footings:
Concrete Strip footings tied up by slab – continuous spread footings of foundation walls
Pad footings – individual, isolated spread footings supporting freestanding columns and piers
Foundation Systems:
Reinforced concrete - One direction slab with beams (wide and flat beams spanning in one direction) – may have been chosen due to narrow spanning needed.
Primary Structures:
In-situ concrete (poured on site) – slab and beams
Reinforced concrete columns
Steel Column (steel represented by parallel diagonal lines)
Tapered steel T sections
Hot rolled steel (Very strong, for heavier loads); Cold formed steel (Lighter weight)
Secondary Structures:
200mm distance
Flange

Cara BrognoCONSTRUCTING ENVIRONMENTS
Lintel – Exceeds width of gap, transfers loads to rest of wall to footings and foundations
Purlin – horizontal structural member in roof, holds roof sheetings
Batten – holds roof sheetings (bares the sheet and transfers loads to the base of the structure)
Joints:
Bolts – Usually threaded metal pin/ rod with a head at one end, placed through a hole and secured at the other end by a mating nut.
Steel Welding
Pin Joints – (simple) restricts vertical and horizontal movement
