As mid'march grows near, we here in sunny Sarasota are getting fired up to host what is hoped will be an epic event for the S2 7.9 Class. Based on the feedback from the class, racing will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and we will hope to get as many races as time and the weather will allow. The Sarasota Sailing Squadron will be hosting our event as part of the long running Sarasota One Design Midwinters Regatta. This yearly event is sailed on Sarasota Bay and is typically sailed on at least two separate courses. The classes that attend the event can vary from E Scows to International Canoes. It is expected that the S2 7.9 Class will share a racecourse with the E Scows and possibly one other keelboat class. The racecourse is set about two miles north of the Sarasota Sailing Squadron in what is typically flat water with relatively consistent breeze. Northerly breeze produced by a cold front is the only direction that kicks up waves on the bay. Average temperatures in March are highs of 78F (25C) with average lows of 55F (13C) Cold fronts are much more moderated in March then they are in February with a sea breeze typical. Included in this document is hopefully most all of the information you will need to plan your time in Sarasota. As you will see in the NOR, each boat registration (only $85 before March 1) will include two dinner tickets for Friday and Saturday (additional tickets available for $15pp), beer/soda for three days and a T'shirt. Excited to host you all again, Travis Yates and the #50 Indigo Crew P.S.' Please take the time to register online or by mail ASAP so proper planning can take place. Online registration can be found through the Squadron website of by clicking here REGISTER 2013 Sarasota One Design Midwinters S2 7.9 Class Guide March 22, 23, 24th This guide is intended to help make your Sarasota visit and your sailing experience as enjoyable as possible. For visiting Sailors By Air

Sarasota is served by a reasonably sized airport (SRQ), that is about 15

minutes from Sarasota Sailing Squadron. Depending on your airline

of choice you may find cheaper flights for you and/or your crew by

looking at flying into Tampa (TPA). The drive from Tampa airport is

about 1 hour and 15 minutes, there is a shuttle that can get you from

TPA to Sarasota (www.stexps.com) for $40. Another option is to fly

into Southwest Florida International Airport in Ft. Meyers (RSW).

The drive up form RSW is around 1 hour and 25 minutes.

Driving Directions

To reach the Squadron from I-75:

! Take the Fruitville Road exit (State Road 780) west until

reaching US-41.

! Turn left, then right at the next light onto the John Ringling

Causeway.

! As you cross the bridge, sailboats moored off the Squadron

can be seen on your right.

! Proceed to St. Armands Circle, and bear right, taking the

first outlet from the Circle.

! Proceed north, following the Mote Marine signs.

! Turn right onto Ken Thompson Parkway, just before the

New Pass Bridge.

! The Squadron is located at the end of the road.

Accommodations

Sarasota is a great tourist destination and March is our high season.

While we have a downtown and number of barrier islands connected

by bridges, nothing in the local area is hard to get to and traffic is a

non-issue. Accommodations from Anna Maria Island to the north all

the way down to Siesta Key and Venice to the south can be considered

as all are within 20-30 minutes of the Squadron. If you need help or

suggestions with accommodations please give Travis a call so he can

let you know the relative merits of the place you are looking at, or if it

is a rental property, he will be happy to try to drive by it to give it a

look.
