2013 Annual ReportF O U N D A T I O N
We are pleased to share the 2013 Annual Report of the College of Coastal Georgia
Foundation, celebrating fundraising initiatives by the College Foundation which exceeded the goal set for 2013 in dollars raised and pledged plus established a new high in number of individual donors. The continuing generosity of our community has been a critical component of this success.
The Foundation had a fundraising goal of $1.75 million. Contributions received totaled $1,789,700. An additional $312 thousand was received in pledges for future gifts, representing a combined total of over $2 million raised in the course of the campaign.
The calendar year closed with a record number of donors as well: 658, an increase from the previous year of more than 15%. Of those donors, 230 have not previously supported the College through a gift to the Foundation. Participation by College faculty and staff in the College Foundation’s 2013 annual campaign more than doubled, from 36% to 76%, representing a profound statement of
their commitment to the mission and vision of the College.
A transitional year, 2013 witnessed a change in leadership, from Dr. Valerie A. Hepburn to Dr. Gregory F. Aloia, the fifth president of the College of Coastal Georgia, and the momentum and enthusiasm continue.
The year also marked five years since receiving four-year state college status for the College of Coastal Georgia.
• As a baccalaureate institution, we were accredited by SACS in 2009 with four baccalaureate degrees. The accredited four-year degrees now offered total eleven, including the unique B.A. in American Studies.
• In 2008, 14% of the College faculty held Ph.D. degrees. That increased to 52% in 2013.
• The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, the state legislature and the taxpayers have invested more than $55 million in new buildings and renovations of existing facilities since 2008.
• With the construction of Lakeside Village, Coastal Georgia became a residential campus. That complex is operating at full capacity. To avoid turning away upperclassmen seeking housing, the College Foundation made an investment in off-campus property which was converted during summer 2013 to Coastal Place Apartments for student housing.
• The College Foundation awarded more than $1.3 million to 1,724 scholarship recipients and raised more than $10.6 million to support the mission and vision of the College of Coastal Georgia.
• Most importantly, since the four-year degree programs started in fall 2009, the College graduated 323 baccalaureate degree holders as of Commencement 2013.
We will continue moving forward in this journey to excellence – both academic and experiential – for the students who have made the College of Coastal Georgia their College of Choice.
2013 Foundation Highlights
Terrill Thomas Scholarship for Women’s GolfJulia Terrill (Terry) Thomas first served as a College Foundation Trustee in 1978 and continued to support the College for decades. Over 20 years ago, she established the Terrill Thomas Endowment to fund scholarships for students attending the College. An avid athlete, Thomas won several awards in tennis and golf, so establishing an endowed women’s golf scholarship in her honor was a natural thing for the Julia Terrill Thomas Foundation to do.
Sarah Gilliard ’16 of Alma, Georgia, is the inaugural recipient of the scholarship, first awarded in 2013. The Bacon County High School graduate had not originally planned to play golf in college, but after a successful high school career, golf programs became a consideration as she began applying to colleges during her senior year. The Early Childhood Education major was also focused on location – close to home with a degree program in her chosen field. The College of Coastal Georgia best met her criteria. When offered a golf scholarship, she brought her clubs to college and enjoyed such a good first season that she was named to the Southern States Athletic Conference team, voted the league’s Freshman of the Year, and invited to play in the NAIA Women’s National Championship at the end of the season. With a GPA exceeding 3.0, Gilliard is a winner in more ways than one.

From the City to the Golden IslesTrue to the vision of serving as a catalyst for cultural development in the Golden Isles, the College of Coastal Georgia provided exciting live performances through a concert series made possible by the Julie and Eric Epstein Charitable Foundation. During 2013, From the City to the Golden Isles brought outstanding talent normally appearing in New York City to our community.
Jazz guitarist Russell Malone headlined the February 2013 concert, accompanied by bassist Daryl Johns. As part of a College-sponsored outreach program, Johns conducted an interactive bass workshop with local Coastal Youth Symphony musicians during his visit.
In May, The Nerds brought their exuberant rock and roll show to the coast. Playing everything from classic rock to blues and funk, they had the audience on their feet, dancing and cheering for more.
Both performances were benefits for the College Foundation, raising crucially-needed funds to enhance arts and cultural programming for the College. Julie and Eric Epstein, residents of New Jersey and Sea Island, support the concert series through annual gifts to the College Foundation.

Founders Gate and the Regent James A. Bishop ArchThe signature entrance to the College campus, Founders Gate, was dedicated in May. The gate stands as a tribute to the many families and community leaders who helped to establish the original college in 1961. The Regent James A. Bishop Arch of the gate celebrates the transformation of the College to a four-year baccalaureate school in 2008 and honors Bishop for his leadership in “founding” the modern-day College of Coastal Georgia. Founders Gate and the Regent James A. Bishop Arch were made possible through generous gifts to the College Foundation by The Anschutz Foundation, James Blanchard, The Broadfield Foundation, University System of Georgia Regent Donald M. Leebern, Jr., Hugh P. Nunnally, James Stahl and College Foundation Trustee William Stembler.
The Bishop Family
Marta B. Torrey Tennis ComplexThe campus and community gathered at the College tennis courts to honor College Foundation Trustee Bill Torrey and his late wife, Marta, for their long-standing support of the College and their adoption of the new athletic programs. The dedication of the Marta B. Torrey Tennis Complex in November 2013 was celebrated by the College tennis teams and coaches, Foundation trustees, faculty and staff, Torrey family members and a crowd of friends and tennis players who had played with Mrs. Torrey over the years.
Recognizing the College’s need to expand athletic programs and facilities to attract and retain talented students, Torrey provided a generous gift to the College Foundation for the naming of the tennis facilities. He previously had endowed a women’s tennis scholarship at the College in memory of his wife.
