NEWSLETTER January 2013 PMI Netherlands Chapter | Postbus 90261 | 1006 BG Amsterdam - Vakvereniging voor Project-, Programma- en Portfoliomanagers www.PMI-Netherlands-Chapter.org President’s column Welcome to the January 2013 edition of the PMI Netherlands Chapter newsletter. To start with let me wish you all a happy 2013. I hope this will be a sparkling and exiting year. Exiting to start with is that three new versions of PMI standards have been released: - PMBOK® 5 th edition - Program Management 3 rd edition - Portfolio Management 3 rd edition You can have an update on the PMBOK 5 th edition at the annual meeting on January 22 nd . After the break Anton Zandhuis will present highlights and major changes. Please register via www.pmi-netherlands-chapter.org. There is a limitation to the number of attendees. So make you sure you subscribe in time! See you there! Of course as this is the annual meeting “Members Only”. If booked (we are close) but still interested in Anton’s update? Let us know we might consider an additional meeting! Regarding the new 3 rd editions I have already challenged our Local Interest Workgroup on Program and Portfolio Management to provide highlights on the new 3 rd editions later this year. More exiting news from the PMI global organization later this year, as there is work in progress on a Software Extension to the PMBOK 5 th edition and a new release of OPM3 is expected around summer. The Software Extension to the PMBOK 5 th edition will for sure anticipate on Agile. Hopefully we can feed that into a Local Interest Workgroup on Agile that we are initiating as the moment. Maybe we should also start a LIWg on OPM3 as there is a renewed interest in Project Management on the corporate/strategic level. That is why one of the theme’s of our annual Summit is about the connection between strategic corporate thinking and project management. At the summit we will present an executive (CIO) view on project management and other presentations connecting the strategy of an organization to the project management approach that enables the organization to achieve its goals. Great stuff and OPM3 fits in there perfectly, as that approach helps organizations to understand where they are on Project-, Program- and Portfolio Management compared to peers. So I assume it is time to freshen our knowledge on OPM3. Anybody interested in this almost hidden PMI phenomenon? The Summit, June 13 th at Figi Zeist, will provide updates and practices on “learning from peer experiences” and “learning from outside the box”. Have a look at www.pmi-netherlands-summit.com and use the early bird PMI Netherlands member discount (code PMI13-100) to register. Like last year this is going to be a “day of learning, lasting for years”. Did you miss the ISO21500 introduction? We are preparing a Chapter event on this in February. I think it is important to have at least a basic understanding on this topic. So if possible join this meeting at Logica in Amstelveen. More events are under construction and will be communicated to you in time. As a board we do realize that it is very important that you receive the membership value you expect and where possible that we exceed this

President’s column Welcome to the January 2013 edition of the PMI Netherlands Chapter newsletter.

To start with let me wish you all a happy 2013. I hope this will be a sparkling and exiting year.

Exiting to start with is that three new versions of PMI standards have been released:

- PMBOK® 5th edition - Program Management 3rd edition - Portfolio Management 3rd edition

You can have an update on the PMBOK 5th edition at the annual meeting on January 22nd.

Regarding the new 3rd editions I have already challenged our Local Interest Workgroup on Program and Portfolio Management to provide highlights on the new 3rd editions later this year. More exiting news from the PMI global organization later this year, as there is work in progress on a Software Extension to the PMBOK 5th edition and a new release of OPM3 is expected around summer.

The Software Extension to the PMBOK 5th edition will for sure anticipate on Agile.

The Summit, June 13th at Figi Zeist, will provide updates and practices on “learning from peer experiences” and “learning from outside the box”.

As a board we do realize that it is very important that you receive the membership value you expect and where possible that we exceed this

expectation. Looking at the high response on our annual member survey, thank you for that, we are doing well but there is room for improvement. So let’s make sure we do understand where we must improve, where we should do better and where we could meet expectations more closely. Let’s make sure we capture your feedback, not only via the annual survey but in good dialogue at our events, by e-mail etc., or even better become a volunteer and help us to grow from good to best. The board is there to serve you and with some new board-members we are ready to kick-off 2013. Let’s go.

Foundational Standards Announcement This is an exciting time to be a member of PMI as we have released the latest editions of three key standards that have long been considered the most influential in the profession.

This month, PMI published A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)—Fifth Edition, The Standard for Program Management—Third Edition, and The Standard for Portfolio Management—Third Edition.

Member Access to Standards As part of your PMI member benefits, electronic versions of these standards are now available to you on PMI.org. Access PDFs of these and all PMI global standards at the Standards Library of PMI and log-in to your myPMI profile.

Exam Date Change Information Also this year PMI will update our credentials and certifications and release 10 official translations of the PMBOK® Guide—Fifth Edition. You can find information about exam date changes and read our FAQs at www.pmi.org/standardsupdate.

Thanks to Our Volunteers PMI is very appreciative and proud of the hard work of our dedicated volunteer committees. Our volunteers gave countless hours of their time to help PMI staff update and publish these standards during 2012. Without their expertise, knowledge and time, PMI would not be able to deliver a quality product that is the foundation of the profession.

Introducing Nitin Mohan, 2013-2014 board member and director at large. I am an experienced Project Management professional with over 10 years of work experience. During this tenure I have worked with leading IT consulting

organizations - IBM, Infosys, Capgemini and am currently employed at Bose. With an ideal conglomeration of strong SAP techno-functional and soft skills, I am responsible for managing IT projects while actively engaging with the business at Bose. I am also actively involved in defining and extending the PMO at Bose.

During my consulting career, besides leading several IT projects at various fortune 500 customers, I was

part of the internal PMO organizations where my responsibilities included project reviews, risk reviews, deal reviews, quality reviews, setting up project management standards/best practices and ensuring they are judiciously followed. I was also responsible for setting up a factory model organization to efficiently and effectively deliver high quality deliverables in a distributed delivery framework. This also gave me the opportunity to work in India, Europe and North America thereby exposing me to multi-lingual/multi-cultural teams.

As an active member of PMI and an honored “Director at Large” with PMI Netherlands chapter, I have keen interest in expanding and sharing my project management knowledge thereby contributing to the profession.

Volunteer Relationship Management System (VRMS) New VRMS Search Options Make Finding a Volunteer Opportunity Easier than Ever! Would you like to volunteer for the PMI Netherlands Chapter and would you like to know what opportunities are available? Thanks to the improved Volunteer Relationship Management System (VRMS), it’s easier for you to identify the opportunities that are available, see how you fit and respond to the opportunity. Find out how you can make the VRMS work for you.

Volunteering is a very rewarding activity. It gives you the opportunity to give something back to the project management community. Since the latest improvements to the volunteer search function in the Volunteer Relationship Management System (VRMS) is has become much easier to finding a volunteer opportunity with a chapter or community of practice.

There is a drop-down now in the “Find an Opportunity” tab that lists all of PMI’s chapters and communities of practice. Volunteers looking for a role with a chapter or community can now simply choose the chapter or community name from the list and any opportunities associated with the chapter or community will display in the results.

There is also a new option for volunteers to search for opportunities by coordinator name. If volunteers know the VRMS Coordinators names, this is another way for them to see everything they’ve posted in one simple list. The coordinator for the PMI Netherlands Chapter is Diepak Kasi.

Adding these two search features gives volunteers faster, easier access to opportunities available to them by chapter, community of practice or coordinator designation. If you have any questions please send an email to [email protected].

We are completing the volunteer roles that we need for the coming period and we will post them on PMI's VRMS as they become available. Make sure that your profile is available and up to date in VRMS. All you need to access VRMS is your PMI username and password. We will be using the VRMS to match the volunteer opportunities with the volunteer candidates. The first opportunity is entered in this system already.

Contributing to the Chapter’s success has never been easier. Let’s make it work.

PMI Hardship Provision In these current economic times, we recognize that some of our members will find themselves in changed financial circumstances. To that end, PMI would like to remind members about its hardship provision that is available to qualifying members in good standing.

PMI’s hardship provision is available to any member who becomes unemployed. In order to qualify, a member must be in good standing and must have paid dues for at least three previous continuous years.

Under this provision, a member is granted a waiver for one year of PMI membership dues and one year of dues for membership in any one PMI community of which the applicant was a member the previous year. The hardship provision may be granted for a maximum of two years for each member.

Details about this program are located on the back of the renewal invoice. To apply for a hardship provision, please send an e-mail to [email protected] and explain the nature of your hardship. Please be sure to include a copy of your renewal invoice (if possible).
