he 26th Annual Convention was held August 28–30, 2013, at the Tubac Golf Resort and Spa, in Tubac, Arizona. This was our second Convention at the Tubac Resort, the first having been in 2007; and again, the Resort did not disappoint. As we “Arizonans” have come to expect – the monsoon weather can attack at any time! Lucky for us – the rain was minimal and did not cause too many venue changes! The “festivities” began on Wednesday morning with the Shotgun/Best Ball Golf Tournament at the Resort. The scenery was beautiful; the mountain views were spectacular! The weather was excellent – until about the 10th hole, when the heavens opened and the rain poured for about 30 minutes! Most teams waited it out and continued to finish their round of golf! Some teams packed it in and drove, shivering in the rain, back to the clubhouse for cocktails and lunch! 1st Place honors went to the team of Steve Steeps, Jason Sherman, Kevin Cameron and Rex Anderson! 2nd Place winners were Paul Rhodes, Rick Chambliss, Sally Chambliss and Steve Napoles. 3rd Place followed with the team of Kari Sheehan, Amy Connolly, Jarrod Williams and Dave Schubel. Longest Drive honors went to Steve Steeps and Cathe Cole-Sherburn; Closest to the Pin went to Lee Miller and Kari Sheehan. president’s message

Falling Back and Springing ForwardSeason’s Greetings from the sun swept Sonoran Desert where we adorn cacti

with holiday trinkets! Once again, the Holidays are upon us. Myfavorite holiday, Thanksgiving, is just around the corner. Brine ordeep-fry? Those are the questions I must ponder…

As always, the year went by in swift fashion. Other than thetweaking of HB 2033, the Legislature was very kind to us. Theforeclosure process was not “hamstrung” by well-meaning legislation. The State of Arizona was continually listed as one of the top states forvolume of foreclosures. More homeowners were “upside down” herethan in most states. Our housing economy, once a source of pride, wasin a shambles.

And then, investors swarmed in and picked up foreclosure homes in droves. Our retail houselistings approached normal levels. The housing market is appreciating at a rapid pace. In MaricopaCounty alone, the median house price is up approximately 30%, year over year. There are biddingwars, in many cases, on the retail side for homes under $200,000. New home permits are up, andwe are seeing some infilling of previously defunct subdivisions. In short – we are leading theNation out of the foreclosure slump! We must give thanks to our Legislative Chair – RickChambliss, Lobbyist – Lee Miller and the legislators for allowing the marketplace to take controlwithout the hindrance of legislation.

To recap the year: Kim Lepore did an excellent job as Education Chair. Our luncheons werevery well attended by both in-state and out-of-state members. That speaks to the quality of thespeakers. Our 26th Convention, held at the Tubac Golf Resort, was cited by many as our best yet! Thanks to Brenda Tucson and Tracey Bayne as co-chairs of the Convention Committee and theircommittee members for a tremendous job. Rhonda Mello, as Website Chair, has worked hard torevamp our website – to make it more professional, timely and user friendly. It is still a work inprogress – but take a look at it. Bookmark it. Like us on Facebook. Follow us on Twitter.

We also have a new logo. The ATA logo has been around as long as the Association itself. Itwas a simple thing, done in Microsoft Paint. It was time to “freshen” it up. We held a contest. Ourthanks to all who submitted entries. We had 34 submissions! Congratulations to Marc Lee of TDService for the submission of the winning logo. Marc won a $250 gift card for his efforts.

Did you like how the ATA’s year unfolded? Get involved – sign up for a Committee to keepthe ball rolling in the proper direction! We need your expertise to become a better Association.

Didn’t like what happened? Frustrated with the Association? Don’t sit there and grumble – Getinvolved! Run for a Board position next year. Sign up for a committee. NOW. We want yourperspective and expertise to move forward. Our goal is always to grow the Association. In order todo that, we need to offer a high quality product which is continuously improving to our members.Yours could be the insight and experience that we are lacking.

Finally, my thanks to the Board, Committee Chairs and Committee Members for a fabulousyear! Thank you for your hard work and efforts in the Association’s behalf. You can be proud ofwhat we accomplished.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the ATA Annual Meeting and Holiday Party being held atthe University Club on Tuesday, December 10. Register online atwww.arizonatrusteeassociation.com. Bring your staff – not only is it a great time, it is always goodto have them network with professionals in the industry.

Best wishes to you, your staff and everyone’s family for a wondrous holiday season and aprosperous New Year.

Respectfully,

Paul T. Rhodes, Jr.

Convention “Wrap” (continued from front page)

Our Welcome Reception was held on thePatio outside the Resort. The rain had stoppedearlier in the day, but the skies were still cloudyand we had to cancel the Star Gazing! We had aCaricature Artist, sponsored by Law Offices ofDavid Knapper, who provided some wonderfulmementos to those who participated! Thank youto Fidelity National Title Agency for hosting theBar!

Our Education Committee, under thedirection of Committee Chair Kim Lepore, provided an outstanding two days of education! Our sessions included the recently passed“Dodd-Frank Act”; Receivership Round Table;changes to the Statutes with HB 2033; GSEAttorney/Trustee Relationships; Market Analysis& Predictions; Title Insurance issues that arise inForeclosure; a “Trustee Sale MurderInvestigation;” and the always fun andinteractive discussion on Trustee Sales with theKent & Chris show! Many, many thanks to all ofour excellent speakers, and most importantly,Kim Lepore and her committee! Bringingtogether two full days of education, with qualityspeakers, is no easy task!

Our planned “Outdoor Barbeque” wasmoved indoors due to the weather and nature ofthe monsoon! We still enjoyed steaks & grilledchicken – just not direct from the barbie! Manythanks to Larry Wilk and his firm, Jaburg &Wilk, for sponsoring our bar on Thursday night!

Following dinner and golf awards, weattended “BT’s Honky Tonk” to dance and enjoythe music of (our very own) The Kevin CameronBand with special guest, Steve Steeps! The ATAprovided souvenir Boot Mugs commemoratingthe event, that were given out with a beer (ornot) from a Keg sponsored by Sue Bouchard ofWestern Regional Foreclosures! Plenty of fun washad playing foosball, pinball, and darts orshooting a game of pool! The winners of ourBaggo Tournament were Tracey Bayne andArmando Rico, with the team of Cindy Solomonand David Bark coming in 2nd!

The Convention would not have beenpossible without the hard work and commitmentby the Committee: Laura Kaminski, PaulRhodes, Rick Chambliss, Godfrey Hamilton,Rhonda Mello and my Co-Chair, Tracey Bayne,as well as Kim Lepore on Education. We hope tosee everyone again next year – join thecommittee and bring some new ideas for nextyear! The 2014 Convention will be held inPhoenix!

Logo Contest Winner

ATA Announces Winner of Logo Contestby Rhonda Mello

The Arizona Trustee Association is pleased to announce the winner of itsLogo Contest. The contest, facilitated by the Board of Directors andWebsite & Social Media Chair, invited its members and the public tosubmit graphic designs for the Design the ATA logo for 2014 and beyond!

In 1987, the Arizona Trustee Association’s first logo was drawn with anink pen, and then copied into the scanner a few times after to make itdigital as technology progressed. Unfortunately, the image had been copiedso many times, that it was painful trying to fully digitalize the logo.

During a two-month run, 34 logo entries were received, but the finaldecision was decided after the recent monthly education luncheon. We wereimpressed with the number of entries and the quality of work. The winninglogo was chosen because it is iconic, original and reflects the uniquesensibility of function and beauty together.

Congratulations toMarc Lee of TD ServiceFinancial Corporation, arecipient of a $250Amazon gift card for hiswinning entry.
