Formula SAE

Student Racing Project

Formula SAE is an international initiative of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) for students to design and build a performance formula racing vehicle. A set of design rules are established to allow students the freedom to develop innovative and creative design solutions, within real-world constraints into a racing vehicle. The Australasian division competition, run in mid-December, consists of five race-type events that test vehicle dynamics in the five timed race events. The competition also consists of three presentation style events based on the competing vehicle.

The UNSW RedbackRacing Team

Redback Racing came into being in late 1999, under the initiative of the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. The team succeeded in winning first place, establishing UNSW as a leading team in SAE racing

at the inaugural Australasian region competition in 2000. The team has since competed in each subsequent year, continuing to achieve strong results in an ever expanding and challenging student racing field.

In the 2012 Formula SAE Australasian Competition, the team of 45 dedicated UNSW students earned an impressive overall rank of 6th place, with 1st place in the Vehicle Cost and Manufacturing Event and 4th place in the Vehicle Design Event.

The

RB12The RB12 is the teams latest and lightest iteration of formula racing vehicle at UNSW, which competed in the 2012 Formula SAE Australasian Competition.

The RB12 is based on the teams signature lightweight hybrid chassis design, and is motivated by an Aprilia SXV 550 V-twin engine, tuned by students at UNSW with MoTeC Software.

The RB12 also introduces new Self-Reinforced Polymer Composites, and an innovative unequal length ‘A' control arm geometry in the front suspension.

2012Events

The team was actively involved in the showcasing of the RB11, the 2011 competition vehicle throughout 2012.

Each event was an opportunity to gain exposure of the team and our sponsors with the prominent display of sponsor boards, and logos on the car and flyers.

The team presented the RB11 through the week long display on the UNSW Globe Lawn to the 45,000 population at UNSW, and to prospective students. The display generated much publicity among many undergraduates, post graduates, staff and by standees.

UNSW O-Week

The team showcased the RB11 and the RB12 chassis on the main walkway, attracting much attention from prospective students and the community.

UNSW Open Day

Aspire UNSW is a program for high school students to realise their potential with higher education, in a two day campus visit at UNSW. The Redback Racing Team showcased the potential of high school students with the display of the RB11for the two campus visit days.

ASPIRE UNSW

This premier event saw the first public unveiling of the RB12 to our distinguished guests, sponsors, staff, friends and family at the new Tyree Renewable Energy Building.
