2013 PREVIEW

Coming off of a 29-21 campaign last spring, the University of NewHavensoftballteamenters2013eyeingitsfifthconsecu-tive trip to the Northeast-10 Championship and a return to the NCAADivisionIIEastRegionChampionshipforthefifthtimeinsix seasons.

Head Coach Jen Starek, the program’s all-time leader in wins (193) and games coached (299), will feature 15 returning student-athletes and seven incoming freshmen for her seventh season in the dugout.

PitchingDespite losing nearly 300 innings from their 2012 pitching staff, including the graduation of Alana Wesche, the Chargers will boast a pair of experienced hurlers in the circle this spring.

Re-entering the fold is senior Micah Stonesifer, who missed all of last season due to injury but in expected to return at full strength. InherfirstseasonatUNHin2011,Stonesiferthrew170.1in-nings en route to a 19-12 record with a 1.73 ERA, racking up 144 strikeouts compared to 54 walks. She was also recognized on the All-Conference Second Team in 2011.

Supplementing the pitching staff are freshmen Nicole King, a four-time First Team All-District honoree at Warren County (Va.) High School, and 2012 All-South Jersey Pitcher of the Year Brit-tany Scott.

Senior Keri Tricinelli may also see limited time in the circle this

season after working 34.0 innings for New Haven last season and has 122.1 innings of collegiate experience in three years with the Chargers. In 2012, she went 2-1 with a 2.26 ERA.

InfieldThe Chargers return a starter at every position around the horn with additional depth behind the plate, at the corners and up the middle.

Brooke Fisher will reassume her duties as the starting catcher for Starek. The junior backstop hit .275 last season with four homeruns,fivedoublesand25runsbattedin.FisherwasaNortheast-10 All-Rookie Team pick in 2011.

Courtney Reed will continue to serve as Fisher’s backup in her sophomore season, while newcomers Nicole D’Andrea and Ash-ley Chasse both bring high school experience working behind the dish.

First base will once again be helmed by Jess Spivey, who started all 50 games at the position as a freshman. Spivey rated fourth on the Chargers last spring with a .281 batting averaging while sluggingfivehomerunsand11doublesandcollecting25runsbatted in.

Also a 50-game starter last season, second baseman Lucy Francisco will complete her eligibility in 2013. She boasted the team’s second-best batting average (.340) last year, while tally-ing 54 hits, 26 RBI and a team-best seven home runs.

An All-America selection two years ago, senior Christina Gelardi will conclude her illustrious career this season. The Derby, Conn. native suffered a season-ending injury after 10 games last season and has made a full recovery in the offseason. Gelardi currently holds a .362 career average and ranks ninth all-time with 85 RBI at UNH. Also an All-Conference and All-Region First Team selection, Gelardi enjoyed the eighth-best batting average in single-season as a sophomore with an average of .405.

Designated PlayerKeri Tricinelli will likely see her role increase in the DP slot. Trici-nelli suffered an injury last season which limited her abilities to the circle. With a career average of .213, the Brick, N.J. native is a solid option at the plate.

When not in the lineup as a pitcher, Brittany Scott will also see time as the designated player. The freshman boasts a solid bat with the ability to make an immediate impact at the collegiate level.

The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division II conference that was established in 1979. The NE-10 consists of 16 member institutions that are located throughout the Northeast including Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

The institutions that make up the Northeast-10 are Adelphi University (Garden City, N.Y.), American InternationalCollege (Springfield,Mass.), Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), Bentley University (Waltham, Mass.), Franklin Pierce University (Rindge, N.H.), Le Moyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), University of Massachusetts Lowell (Lowell, Mass.), Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.), University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.), Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Saint Anselm College (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.), College of Saint Rose (Albany, N.Y.), Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Conn.), Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester, N.H.), and Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.).

The 16 member institutions are spread geographically from Syracuse, New York to Boston, Massachusetts and from Burlington, Vermont to Long Island, New York. Many of the members are located in or around the metropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, New Haven, Worcester, and New York.

The Conference most recently welcomed the University of New Haven in 2008 and Adelphi University in 2009, adding to the powerful union of strong academic and athletic colleges and universities.

The Northeast-10 has evolved into a membership committed to competitive athletics programs that emphasize the educationonandoffthefieldofitsmorethan5,500 student athletes.

UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION

Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation

Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University PresidentSince becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In thepast fiveyears alone, enrollment has grown by 34 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who

hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 59 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $100 million in construction projects and has launched 15 new academic programs.

UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universities in the North and boasts nationally ranked programs in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, and the liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of his contributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan was named “Businessman of the Year” by Business New Haven magazine in 2008.

President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research

project before graduation.

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report.

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies.
