FROM COACH JACOBS

This is a great time to explore the University of Evansville, which offers a truly unique combination of commitment to excellence and tradition both on the soccer field and in the classroom.

The University of Evansville is recognized among the top Division I programs in the nation, having been a regular participant in the NCAA Tournament, a Final Four team in both 1985 and 1990, and a team that has been ranked number 1 in the country on several occasions.

The University of Evansville is consistently one of the only teams in the country that are ranked nationally in the polls, achieve a team GPA of 3.0 or higher, and rank in the top 40 nationally in attendance. UE soccer players receive an experience that transcends sport -- the chance to compete with and against the best players and teams in the nation, to compete in a stadium with fans that rate among the finest in college soccer, the opportunity to get a degree that is highly valued, and the potential to develop into a leader among your peers.

We are very proud of our past, present and future at the University of Evansville, and hope that our recruiting yearbook can offer you insight into what our program is like behind the scenes.

Yours In Soccer,

Coach Jacobs

The 2013 PURPLE ACESSeason Preview

Expectations will be high for the Purple Aces in 2013, as they return 19 letterwinners from last year’s squad that finished 9-8-1 overall and tied for third in the always competitive Missouri Valley Conference with a 3-2-1 mark in conference matches. Sophomore Faik Hajderovic led Evansville’s offense with 15 points in 2012 to earn NSCAA All-Region recognition. The St. Louis native scored five goals and added five assists to achieve All-MVC Honorable Mention and MVC All-Freshman Team status and secure a spot on TopDrawerSoccer.com’s postseason Top 100 Freshmen List. Fellow sophomore Nate Opperman was also named to the Top 100 Freshmen List in addition to garnering selections on the MVC All-Freshman Team and ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic All-Tournament Team. Opperman finished his freshman campaign with three goals, which will all game-winners. Junior Nick Schroeder will look to build on the momentum he gained at the end of last season, as he closed the year by scoring five points in Valley action and earning All-MVC Second Team honors. Sophomore Mark Anthony Gonzalez also returns as a key component in UE’s attacking third. Gonzalez was named to the MVC All-Freshman Team last season after recording 11 points on five goals and an assist.

Evansville will also be experienced along the back line, as juniors Patrick Hodges and Charlie Macias, along with sophomore Luis Romero return after standout seasons in 2012. All three earned All-MVC Honorable Mention recognition last season, after the Aces recorded six shutouts and posted a 1.39 goals against average last season. UE was even better in conference play, as it held Valley foes to a 0.98 goals against average and recorded three shutouts. Hodges emerged as the Aces’ top defender last season and was named the Defensive Player of the Tournament at the ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic. In goal, junior Eric Teppen will look to build on his solid sophomore campaign. Teppen started all 18 matches between the pipes and was named an All-MVC Honorable Mention after going 9-8-1 with 75 saves and a 1.39 goals against average. In Valley action, Teppen

allowed just six goals in as many contests for a 0.98 goals against average to go with 19 saves and three clean sheets. The Aces welcome eight newcomers to the roster in 2013, including a pair of transfers in Felipe Cortez and Matthew Hand. Cortez, who spent two seasons at Robert Morris University in Chicago before coming to UE, is one of the top prospects at the Chicago Fire Academy. Cortez tallied six points on a goal and four assists for RMU last season. Hand, a transfer from the University of the Cumberlands, saw action in nine games a season ago for the Patriots. Freshmen Kyle Richardville, Jared Robinson and Tyrus Sciarra will look to provide attacking depth for Evansville, while Landon Souder and Jacob Hill will bolster the middle of the pitch. Fellow freshman Ryan Koenig will compete for playing time along the back line and classmate Erik Hagan will add depth in goal.

Mike JacobsHC HEAD COACH8TH SEASON • PACE UNIVERSITY, 1993

Entering his eighth season as head coach, Mike Jacobs has helped return the University of Evansville to national prominence. He inherited a program that won only two games the year prior to his arrive, and immediately transformed them into the nation’s most improved team in 2006. With winning seasons in five of his seven seasons at the helm, Jacobs has led the Aces to the finals of the 2009 MVC Tournament and the opportunity to play for the MVC regular-season title in 2012.

He took over the program in 2006 and in his first season, UE produced the nation’s most improved record by going 9-8-0. However, that wasn’t all. That same season, Evansville posted its best non-conference record (7-3-0) since 1996 and placed fifth in the highly regarded Missouri Valley Conference, marking the Aces’ highest finish since 1999.

In 2007, playing a more difficult schedule, the Aces won 10 games for the first time since 1999 and climbed two more spots in the MVC standings, finishing third behind a pair of teams that went on to reach the NCAA Sweet 16. UE also advanced to the MVC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 1999 and finished sixth nationally by scoring 45 goals.

Jacobs once again led the Aces to a winning record in 2008, as UE played seven nationally-ranked teams during the course of the season. Mike Luttrull and Robby Lynch were each chosed for the All-Midwest Regional Team and a total of nine members of the squad received All-MVC honors. As a result of his efforts,

Jacobs was awarded a contract extension through the 2012 season. His 2008 team was ranked as high as No. 21 in the nation by Soccer Times - an amazing feat considering the program had won just two games in 2005, a year prior to the arrival of Jacobs and his staff.

In 2009, UE posted its fourth-straight winning season, reached the MVC Tournament final and narrowly missed advancing to the NCAA Tournament. A record-tying four players made the All-Midwest Region Team, while Luttrull and Lynch earned national scholastic honors. The 2009 team was recognized by each of the major national polls, receiving votes in the Soccer Times and NSCAA national rankings, while earning a national ranking in the Top Drawer Soccer polls. The 2009 season marked the second-consecutive season that the Aces were among the nation’s top 50 in attendance.

The 2010 squad produced a pair of all-region players in Lynch and defender Aaron Henkle and Lynch was tabbed the MVC Defensive Player of the Year. In January 2011, Lynch was chosen by the expansion Portland Timbers in the Major League Soccer (MLS) supplemental draft. Lynch was one of six Aces who earned All-MVC postseason honors following the season. In addition, Luttrull was chosen for the second year in a row as an Academic All-American and Lynch was named an NSCAA Scholar All-American for the second-straight year.

The 2011 season was full of close encounters, as nine of Evansville’s 17 matches were decided by one goal. The young squad boasted five all-conference honors with seniors Jarrett Robbins and Aaron Henkle earning All-MVC Second Team and All-MVC Honorable Mention nods, respectively. With great first-year campaigns, Patrick Hodges, Eric Teppen and Ryan Stallings were named to the MVC All-Freshman Team.

Jacobs guided the Aces to yet another winning season in 2012 and a third-place finish in the Valley standings. UE nearly captured the MVC regular-season title, as it hosted Creighton on the final day of the regular season in a match that would determine the league’s regular-season champion. Freshman Faik Hajderovic was named to the All-Midwest Region team and was selected by Top Drawer Soccer, along with classmate Nate Opperman, as one of the top 100 freshmen in the country. Nine Aces were selected to All-MVC squads, including sophomore Nick Schroeder, who highlighted the selections by earning a spot on the All-MVC Second Team.

Jacobs began his coaching career shortly after he graduated from Pace University in Pleasantville, N.Y. in 1993. He served as the head coach at Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y. from 1996-99, and was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after taking a team that finished 1-17-1 in 1996 and leading the Gaels to a 12-6 record in 1997. At age 24, Jacobs was the youngest Division I head coach in the country.

Jacobs joined the University of Evansville program for the first time in 2000, when he was hired by legendary coach Fred Schmalz as the Purple Aces’ top assistant coach.

After two seasons at UE, Jacobs moved on to serve as the top assistant at Duke University, where he helped head coach John Rennie’s Blue Devils to three NCAA

Tournament appearances, including the semifinals of the 2004 College Cup. Jacobs was named the inaugural winner of the NSCAA National Assistant Coach of the Year award that same year and was listed by College Soccer News as one of the “Top Assistant Coaches in the Country” four-consecutive years. In 2005, he helped guide Duke to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship, before returning to Evansville as the head coach in 2006.

Jacobs’ professional coaching experience includes assisting with the Long Island Rough Riders, where he worked with former Tampa Bay Mutiny and New York/New Jersey MetroStars head coach Alfonso Mondelo. He also assisted with the North Jersey Imperials of the USISL, where he coached former United States Under-23 National Team assistant coach Tim Mulqueen. Jacobs has served on the US Soccer National Goalkeeping Staff and USL Super Y-League National Coaching Staff, and currently serves on the NSCAA Senior Academy Staff.

Jacobs has developed a reputation for being able to identify and develop professional players, both in the United States and abroad. This group includes Stefani Miglioranzi (formerly of the Philadelphia Union); Cory Elenio of the Wilmington Hammerheads; Alec Dufty, (formerly of AC St. Louis); Michael Videira of the Chicago Fire; Darrius Barnes of the New England Revolution; Ray Burse and Spencer Wadsworth (formerly of FC Dallas); Blake Camp (formerly of the New York Red Bulls); Jordan Cila (formerly of the New York Red Bulls, Real Salt Lake and Colorado Rapids); Chris Loftus (formerly of the New England Revolution and Swedish first division); Kyle Helton (formerly of the New England Revolution); Mike Grella (Leeds United of English Coca-Cola Championship); and Brad Guzan (Aston Villa FC of the English Premier League and US National Team).

A longtime advocate for the growth of soccer at the youth, collegiate and professional levels, Jacobs was elected as the Vice President for Events of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in January 2012. The NSCAA is the largest coaching organization in the world with more than 30,000 members. In 2013, Jacobs represented the NSCAA at the Missouri Athletic Club banquet in St. Louis, where he had the honoring of presenting the Hermann Trophy to the Collegiate Soccer Players of the Year.

He was elected to the NSCAA Board of Directors in 2009 and currently serves on the NSCAA Executive Committee that provides leadership and sets policy for youth, high school, college and professional soccer in the United States. Jacobs is expected to become the NSCAA’s president in 2015.

“My initial interest in being involved in the Board of Directors was to have a chance to grow the game of soccer on a larger level,” Jacobs says. “The opportunity to serve as secretary gives me an opportunity to have a presence at the local, regional, national and international levels of our game. It’s pretty

humbling to serve in this fashion in the largest coaching organization in the world.”

Jacobs holds a USSF “A” license and an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, in addition to completing the English League Managers Association (LMA) School of Football Management certificate. In a growling role with the NSCAA, Jacobs has written for NSCAA publications, has co-authored a chapter in the Soccer Coaches Bible along with Coach Rennie, and currently writes a column on soccer for the Sunday edition of the Evansville Courier & Press.

He has also started a number of programs to help connect Aces Soccer with its supporters. “Kick The Cold, Give A Coat” provides coats for those less fortunate during the holiday season, while the ProRehab HEALTHY BODIES, HEALTHY MINDS program encourages healthy lifestyle habits with exercise and diet. “Kick for Nick” is a cooperative effort between Aces Soccer and the Lambda Chi fraternity to collect used soccer balls to send to children in Iraq. UE’s “Kick For The Cure” campaign began in 2008 as a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. Team members have also participated in Habitat for Humanity, Circle K Special Education Prom, the Martin Luther King Jr. Walk and Riley Walkathon. In addition, the Aces Soccer Camp is one of the largest soccer camps in the country, serving youth players from all over the United States.

Mike and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Evansville with their four children - Katherine (15), Daniel (11), Allison (10) and Amanda (8).

MARSHALL RAYAHC ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH8TH SEASON • UNIVERSITY OF EVANSVILLE, 2000

Entering his eighth year as Mike Jacobs’ top assistant, and his fifth season as associate head coach, Marshall Ray is a major reason why Aces Soccer has become one of UE’s premier athletic programs.

“Marshall has been intricately involved with our success, and continues to be an influence in our locker room,” says Jacobs. “Having a former player who is passionate about representing the University of Evansville is a tremendous example for our players. There is no question that Marshall bleeds purple.”

A 2000 graduate of UE, Ray was a member of the 1996 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship team that reached the NCAA Tournament. He played both as a defender and forward during his career, and was named an MVC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week during his time in an Aces’ uniform. Ray received UE’s Ian Coull Award in 1999 for competitive spirit and teamwork, and was selected to the NSCAA Scholar-Athlete all-region squad.

After playing professionally for the A-League Nashville Metros in 2001, Ray spent four years at Drury University. He served as Drury’s assistant during his first team seasons, before becoming the youngest Division I head coach in the country in 2003 at age 25. Both of Ray’s Drury squads received the NSCAA Team Academic Award.

Ray had just completed his playing career at Evansville when Jacobs joined the Aces’ staff as an assistant coach in 2000. Jacobs left for Duke University as an assistant coach in 2002 and brought Ray to the Duke program following the 2004 season. Ray spent the 2005 season involved with recruiting, player development and day-to-day operations for the Blue Devils, who won the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament and were nationally ranked that year. He also directed the Duke Soccer Camps.

When Jacobs returned to UE as head coach in 2006, he made Ray his first choice for assistant coach. Ray holds a USSF A license and studied under Pierre Barrieu, U.S. National Fitness Coach, to obtain a USSF National Fitness Level I license. He also holds an NSCAA Advanced National License and serves as Midwest Regional Chair for the NSCAA/Performance Subaru Division I All-America Committee. As a coach of Evansville SC, he led the squad to IYSA state championships in 2009 and 2010.

Marshall resides in Evansville with his wife Julia and their three children, Patrick (6), Hilary (2) and Eliza (1).

The Missouri Valley CONFERENCEThe Missouri Valley Conference has demonstrated throughout history that it finds the strength, resources, competitive determination and leadership to rise to even higher levels when confronted with change or significant challenges.

In 2012-13, the winds of change that have dramatically affected Division I conference realignment in recent years finally touched The Valley. For the first time since 1996, the MVC will experience the addition and departure of a member institution. The Valley formally welcomed Loyola University Chicago into the membership on July 1, 2013. Loyola is the 33rd institution to enter the Missouri Valley Conference and the first-ever member university from the Chicago metropolitan area. In March 2013, Creighton University, an MVC member for nearly 60 years, had announced its departure from the MVC for the newly configured Big East Conference.

If the Missouri Valley Conference has been anything over the past 106 seasons of athletic competition, it has been resilient. The Valley – which will experience its 107th season of athletics competition in 2013-14 -- has weathered many kinds of storms, including changes in its membership. In 1928, six institutions (Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska, Missouri and Oklahoma) left the league to form the Big Six Conference. Another major exodus from the MVC took place in the 1970s when four institutions departed over a three-year period. Each time there has been a setback or a major change in membership, the Conference has retooled and reinvented itself.

The nation’s second-oldest NCAA Division I conference continues to be a leader in college athletics and is one of the nation’s most progressive conferences. League members have worked together to focus on common goals and objectives, putting a high value on league harmony while continuing to invest in athletic programs to compete at the highest level.

The Valley brand remains very strong, both regionally and nationally, and the great athletic tradition of The Valley remains a compelling force in recruiting student-athletes and in marketing all the MVC programs.

Meanwhile, the success of The Valley television package is one of the great stories in the league. The MVC Television Network has blossomed into a revenue-generating vehicle and The Valley’s most visible marketing tool. Also, The Valley continues

to be proactive in upgrading the production and marketing of both institutionally-produced and conference-produced webcasts. In 2010, The Valley took a major step toward ensuring current revenues in television media and tournament sponsorship sales would be guaranteed in future years when it announced a 10-year partnership with Learfield Sports. The Jefferson City, Missouri-based company now has the exclusive sales and marketing rights to MVC assets that include championships and television advertising.

During the tenure of Doug Elgin, The Valley’s ninth and longest-tenured commissioner, The Valley has been aggressive in hosting NCAA events in St. Louis. From 1998-2010, the MVC served as host for a staggering nine NCAA tournament events in that 13-year period, which has made St. Louis one of the most frequent stops on the NCAA Tournament trail. The Valley hosted Women’s Final Fours in 2001 and 2009 and the Men’s Final Four in 2005. This year, The Valley will host an NCAA second- and third-round men’s basketball event at Scottrade Center in St. Louis. Last year, the league hosted an NCAA second- and third-round men’s basketball event in Kansas City and previously assisted with preliminary round men’s events in both 2008 and 2012 in Omaha.

The seeds for the creation of the conference were planted by eight administrators representing five institutions, who met at the Midland Hotel in Kansas City, Mo., on Jan. 12, 1907. The five schools which formed the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association were Washington University of St. Louis, and the state universities of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. Two months after the initial meeting, two more schools -- Drake University and Iowa State College -- were admitted.

In the fall of 1907, basketball became the first competitive sport. Today, the Missouri Valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country and track & field (indoor and outdoor), men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball.

While the inclusion of women’s sports under a comprehensive athletic umbrella is a recent development in the league’s storied history, over the years, Valley student-athletes and coaches have become household names during the league’s illustrious history, both during their collegiate

careers and, for some, professional careers.

In fact, The Valley began honoring that tradition in the summer of 1997, when the conference began its athletics Hall of Fame. Hersey Hawkins of Bradley, Larry Bird of Indiana State, Wes Unseld of Louisville, Coach Henry Iba of Oklahoma State, Dave Stallworth of Wichita State, Ed Macauley of Saint Louis, and Oscar Robertson of Cincinnati were members of the initial induction class. Currently, nearly 80 former players, coaches and alums dot the league’s Hall of Fame.

Men’s basketball, perhaps, has the league’s most storied tradition, boasting the likes of Hall of Famers Bird and Robertson as former players, but The Valley has also produced national-caliber student-athletes in its other sponsored sports. In 2001, Missouri State’s Jackie Stiles became the first Valley woman to earn the Honda-Broderick Cup, given to the nation’s top female collegiate student-athlete. In the sport of track and field, Indiana State’s Holli Hyche captured seven national sprint titles in the early 1990s, Southern Illinois’ Darrin Plab won back-to-back NCAA outdoor high jump titles in 1991 and 1992, SIU’s Brittany Riley became the World record holder in the weight throw in 2007, and Kylie Hutson of Indiana State swept both the indoor and outdoor pole vault titles in 2009 and in 2010. Southern Illinois’ Jeneva McCall (three NCAA individual championships) and Illinois State’s Tim Glover (back-to-back javelin championships in 2011 and 2012) and Indiana State’s Felisha Johnson (indoor weight throw in 2011 and 2013) are the most recent multi-year NCAA champions in the league’s highly decorated history in track & field.

In the fall of 1997, Creighton’s Johnny Torres was named the collegiate male soccer player of the year for a second-straight year, while SMU’s Luchi Gonzalez (2001) and Tulsa’s Ryan Pore (2004) have also earned a National Player of the Year honor in men’s soccer. Meanwhile, league member Wichita State has produced three national collegiate players of the year in baseball, including Joe Carter (1981), Phil Stephenson (1982) and Darren Dreifort (1993).

League members include Bradley, Drake, Evansville, Illinois State, Indiana State, Loyola Chicago, Missouri State, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois, and Wichita State. Central Arkansas and Southern Illinois Edwardsville are affiliate members in men’s soccer, and Dallas Baptist is an affiliate member for baseball.
