Since March of 1921, UBC student-athletes have been gathering at the Big Block Banquet to welcome the newest members into the Block Club and to celebrate the success of a season gone by. More recently, with the inclusion of the UBC Sports Hall of Fame inductions, the Block Banquet has brought together past UBC Thunderbird greats with the stars of today and tomorrow.

This evening, 147 athletes, coaches, trainers and managers will join the 9,000-member Block Club; several will join the impressive list of past award winners; and five former athletes, one builder and two teams will take their rightful place in the Hall of Fame alongside UBC sports luminaries from years gone by.

These latest inductees, together with the biographies and photos of athletes, builders and teams previously enshrined, can be viewed at www.ubcsportshalloffame.com. These distinguished UBC’ers are also showcased in the UBC Sports Hall of Fame located in the foyer of the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.

ATHLETES

Penny Cooper - Field HockeyPenny Cooper led the Thunderbirds field hockey team to many a victory from 1987 to 1992, including a CIS national championship title in 1990. She was a four-time Canada West all-star and All Canadian; a two-time Academic All Canadian, and was twice voted to the CIS Championship Eleven. Throughout much of her UBC playing days she was a member of Canada’s national team and an Olympian in Seoul in 1988, where along with UBC team mate Melanie Slade, she helped Canada to a respectable sixth-place finish. She was awarded the Harry Jerome Comeback Award by Sport BC in 1988 and UBC’s Kay Brearley Award for service to women’s athletics in 1992.

Jessica Deglau - SwimmingJessica Deglau was a butterfly specialist on five CIS Championship swim teams at UBC between 1995 and 2002, winning a total of 29 medals and taking home CIS Swimmer of the Year honours in 1999 and 2000. An Academic All Canadian and co-winner of the Marilyn Pomfret Trophy in 2002, she was also a top-flight international competitor, finishing sixth in 200 metre butterfly in the 1996 Olympic Games and setting a new Canadian record in the process. She was also a finalist in 400 and 800 metre freestyle relays at both the 1996 and 2000 Olympics, and won a total of five medals in the 1998 and 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Jack Henwood – FootballJack Henwood was a multi-purpose player throughout his UBC football career from 1956 to 1959, playing quarterback, running back, defensive back and added kicking and punting duties in his final two seasons. Playing in his freshman year against tough US opponents, he was the only UBC player to be named to the 1956 Evergreen Conference all-star team. In UBC’s first season in the Canada West conference in 1959, he was instrumental in the Thunderbirds winning the conference title and earning a berth in the team’s first-ever national championship. The 1960 Bobby Gaul Trophy winner, Jack set numerous team records, and his 100 per cent, 10-for-10 single-game pass completion record set in 1959 remains unbroken.

ATHLETES

Jessica Mills – BasketballAfter a brilliant athletic and academic career from 1995 to 2000, Jessica Mills graduated as UBC’s all-time women’s basketball scoring leader with 1,993 points, and was named an Academic All Canadian in each of her five seasons. In just her second season she led Canada West in field-goal percentage, and for the remainder of her career she was consistently ranked in the top 15 in the conference in numerous statistical categories. She was named a first-team All Canadian in 1999 and 2000; the Top Female Academic All Canadian in the Canada West conference for the 1998-99 season, and graduated as the Marilyn Pomfret Trophy winner in 2000.

Victor Warren – Field HockeyA member of one of UBC’s best-known families, Victor Warren is the brother of 1996 UBC Sports Hall of Fame inductee Charlotte Warren and the son of 1993 inductee Dr. Harry Warren. As one of Canada’s top field hockey players, he led the Thunderbirds to Vancouver City League Championships in 1958, 60 and 63 and is still recognized as UBC’s all-time scoring leader, with 114 goals in 92 games over six seasons. He was also selected to the provincial team on six occasions, leading BC to four national championships. A member of the national team in the 1960’s, he played in the 1964 Olympic Games along with other former UBC greats Peter Buckland, Lee Wright and John Young.

BUILDERS

Dr. Rob Lloyd-Smith - BuilderDr. Rob Lloyd-Smith has been the head physician for UBC Thunderbird teams for over three decades, and has contributed to numerous conference and national championship victories by providing top-flight injury treatment to a countless number of UBC athletes. In 1982, a few short years after completing medical training at McGill, Rob joined UBC Student Health Service and the Allan McGavin Sports and Exercise Medicine Centre, where he was the first to complete a newly developed Fellowship in Sports Medicine. In addition to UBC, he has loaned his expertise to a vast range of organizations, including Canada’s national biathlon, nordic ski and field hockey teams, the International Ski Racing Federation, the NHL Players Association, the National Ballet, and the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

TEAMS

1989-91 Men’s Soccer TeamBetween 1989 and 1991, the highly revered UBC men’s soccer team was undefeated against Canadian university competition, won three consecutive CIS Championships, and consisted of a core of many of the country’s most outstanding and officially recognized players. Led by UBC coaching legend, Dick Mosher, this talented cohort represented Canada at the World Collegiate Soccer Championships in 1990, 1991 and 1992, and qualified for the championship final in 1991, losing by one goal to the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Over the course of three seasons, four UBC players were first-team All Canadians, five were second-team all Canadians, and a total of nine players played professionally in the Canadian Soccer League.

1972-74 Women’s Volleyball TeamThe 1972-73 UBC women’s volleyball team was just the second UBC women’s team in any sport to claim a national university championship, winning the 1973 Canadian Women’s Interuniversity Athletic Union Volleyball Championship at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia following an undefeated regular season. Led by a core of returning players, the Thunderbirds followed that up with another undefeated season the following year, and claimed a second consecutive national championship before a home-town crowd at War Memorial Gymnasium. Coached by 1994 UBC Sports Hall of Fame inductee Marilyn Pomfret, the roster consisted of a complete slate of outstanding players, including future national team members Betty Baxter, Sandy Vosburgh and Maureen Fishleigh.

This award is in recognition of Carolyn Dobie-Smith, the student trainer for the women’s volleyball team from September 1989 to April 1990, who died suddenly in the summer of 1992. Carolyn displayed an exemplary level of dedication and commitment to the athletes with whom she worked, both as a trainer and a friend. She willingly shared her knowledge and expertise with less experienced student trainers, providing an excellent role model. This award will be presented annually, as appropriate, to a student trainer who best exemplifies Carolyn Dobie-Smith.

du VivierTeam of the Year Award

The du Vivier Trophy, whose donor remains anonymous, was originally awarded to the outstanding UBC team of the year based on performance, sportsmanship and deportment. The trophy returned to its roots in 2007 after recognizing all UBC national champions for the past few years.

The leadership award was established in 1995-96 by the Thunderbird Athletes Council. The award is unique in that it represents peer recognition for outstanding qualities and achievements in individuals. It is meant to represent UBC student athletes who would otherwise remain too often unrecognized. The award is meant to acknowledge students at UBC who are outstanding athletes, leaders, contributors and, above all, outstanding people.

In 2008 the TAC Leadership Award was re-named after the legendary Dr. Douglas “Buzz” Moore, a member of the Athletics Department for more than 40 years. Buzz arrived at UBC in 1964 and worked full-time with the Athletics Department until his retirement in 1986. During that time he filled various roles – everything from coaching to alumni relations to business manager – but he is best knows a being the heart and soul of the UBC Big Block Club.

Even after his retirement, Buzz worked tirelessly to build alumni support and due to his efforts, the Big Block Club has grown to over 8,000 members. Every year, T-Birds old and new come together at the annual Big Block banquet to celebrate the best of UBC Athletics.

Although Buzz passed away in March 2011, his memory will live on forever.

Created in 2007 to honour UBC’s topmale athlete of the year, the R.J. “Bus” Phillips Memorial Trophy is named after the elder statesman of the UBC Athletic Department who passed away at the age of 91 in 2006. The builder of athletic opportunity and tradition at UBC, “Bus” served as Director of Men’s Athletics for 27 years, helping the athletic department become one of the strongest in the country and setting the stage for today’s success. One of the founding fathers of both the modern Canada West Conference and the CIAU (CIS), he raised the profile of Canadian university athletics and of UBC.

This year marks the sixth annual awarding of Thunderbird Alumni Rings. In partnership with the UBC Alumni Association and its sponsor, UBC Alumni MBNA MasterCard®, Thunderbird Rings are being awarded to members of UBC varsity teams who have completed their eligibility and will be graduating this year.

The work of First Nation’s carver Rick Johnson, the Thunderbird alumni ring will symbolize the commitment of UBC’s athletes to the pursuit of excellence and serve as a constant reminder of their affinity to UBC and their years as a Thunderbird.

Proudly worn on the small finger, Thunderbird alumni will be easily recognizable to one another and should serve as an opportunity to reconnect with fellow varsity alumni in any setting.

A special thank you to the UBC Alumni Association for helping to make this initiative happen. If you are already a Thunderbird alumni member and would like a ring, please contact Steve Tuckwood at (604) 822-1972 for details on the program.

For more information on all alumni services chosen with care by your alumni association, please see www.alumni.ubc.ca or call 604-822-3313.

The Order of the Thunderbird was established in 2010 to recognize those who have given service to the UBC Thunderbirds above and beyond the call of duty. This year’s recipient is Bob Philip.

Bob Philip arrived at UBC from Montreal’s Concordia University July 15, 1992 to take over as Director of Athletics and Recreation. Exactly 20 years to the day later he walked out of his War Memorial Gym office for the last time. Un-der his watch UBC Thunderbird teams claimed 54 CIS championships, as well as five NAIA championships, taking over the number one position in Cana-da for the most all-time national crowns. He also brought unprecedented growth to almost every aspect of UBC’s varsity sport and campus recreational programs, including more than $100 million in sports facility upgrades and new construction.

Congratulations Bob on 20 years of success!
