Oklahoma has an 11-3-1 home record in the series . . . the last Tulsa victory in the series came in Norman on Sept. 28, 1996 by a score of 31-24. Tulsa is the smallest FBS school in the country with just under 3,200 undergraduate students, while Oklahoma has an enrollment of 31,097 students. Tulsa faces a top-25 team for the first time since playing four top-10 teams in the 2011 season . . . Tulsa's last win against a top-25 team was against No. 24 Hawaii in the 2010 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl by a 62-35 score . . . before that, it was No. 22 Ball State in the 2009 GMAC Bowl, 45-13 . . . the last Tulsa victory vs. a top-20 team was a 27-20 win over No. 19 Iowa on Sept. 21, 1996 . . . Tulsa Football Game Notes 2013 • page 2 TULSA HEAD COACH BILL BLANKENSHIP IN THIRD YEAR AT COACHING HELM . . . • Bill Blankenship is a 1979 graduate of The University of Tulsa, where he was a quarterback from 1975-79.• In his third season, Blankenship has posted an overall 20-9 record,• In just his second season, Blankenship was named the 2012 Conference USA Coach of the Year after leading Tulsa to an overall 11-3 record and the schools' second C-USA Championship . . . the 11 wins tied a school record for victories.• Completed his first season as the Golden Hurricane head coach in 2011 with an overall 8-5 record. • Blankenship is just the second coach in school history to win 19 games in his first two seasons behind Todd Graham (21, 2007-08). Two other coaches won 18 games in two years –– Francis Schmidt (18, 1919-20) and Henry Frnka (18 in 1941-42).• Collected his first career collegiate win with a 31-3 win at Tulane on Sept. 10, 2011.• Blankenship became only the seventh head coach in Tulsa history to win eight or more games in his first season.• Blankenship was promoted as Tulsa's 28th Head Football Coach on January 14, 2011 . . . he spent the previous four years as a Tulsa assistant coach.• Blankenship returned to his alma mater in January 2007 to coach the wide receivers . . . in 2008, Blankenship was named special teams coordinator and in 2009 added the title of running backs coach . . . in 2010, he served as senior associate head coach, running backs coach and special teams coordinator.• Before entering the collegiate coaching ranks, Blankenship spent 23 years as an Oklahoma High School coach . . . Blankenship resigned as the head football coach at Tulsa’s Union High School in December 2005 after leading his team to a second consecutive state championship at the Oklahoma Class 6A school. • As a head coach on the prep level, Blankenship compiled a 205-68 record, including an average of 10 wins per season for his last 20 years, appeared in the state championship game eight times and won three state titles. • He spent 14 years as the head football coach and athletic director at Union High School, where he registered a record of 154-26 . . . his teams qualified for the state playoffs 14 times, reached the quarterfinals 10 times and made the semifinals in nine seasons . . . Blankenship’s teams made the state title game seven times . . . he guided his Union team to Oklahoma Class 6A state titles in 2002, 2004 and 2005.

SALAZAR KICKS IT THROUGH . . .• Junior Carl Salazar connected on 3-of-3 field goals and totaled 12 points in a 30-27 victory over Colorado State.• With Tulsa trailing 20-14 at halftime, Salazar hit a 31-yarder and a 23-yarder to bring Tulsa to within seven points, 27-20, with 13:12 remaining in the game.• His biggest field goal came when his 34-yarder went through the uprights as time expired to give Tulsa the three-point victory. • The game-winner came just a week after he missed his first two collegiate field goal attempts at Bowling Green.

WATTS BIG RUN SETS UP WINNING FIELD GOAL . . .• Trey Watts had already run for 109 yards on 20 carries against Colorado State, before he broke a 45-yard run with less then 0:30 remaining in the contest.• Watts ended the game with 152 rushing yards and 58 receiving yards, while also totaling 22 yards on punt returns and 15 kickoff return yards.• He finished with 247 all-purpose yards on 36 touches for a 6.9 average per touch.

DEFENSE STANDS UP IN CRUCIAL TIME . . .• With Tulsa trailing 27-20 at the 13:12 mark of the fourth quarter against Colorado State, the Hurricane defense stepped up in a huge way.• Colorado State had four fourth quarter possessions –– that totaled 12 plays for negative 3 yards.• On the four possessions, Tulsa held CSU to 3 plays for 5 yards, 3 plays for 0 yards, 3 plays for 2 yards and 3 plays for -4 yards.• On the otherhand, the Tulsa offense amassed 168 total yards in the fourth quarter and scored 13 points.

OKLAHOMANS . . .• There are 58 Oklahomans on Tulsa's full 2013 roster, and 39 are on the normal travel roster.• Twenty-seven players on the Golden Hurricane roster are from the Tulsa metro area.

ON THE TWO-DEEP . . .• Of Tulsa's current 44-man two-deep, 29 players are either freshmen or sophomores . . . that includes six true freshmen, 11 red-shirt freshmen and 12 sophomores.• On offense, Tulsa has 16 players on the two-deep that are either freshmen or sophomores . . . this includes two sophomore starters and one red-shirt freshman and one true freshman starter.• The defensive unit has 13 players on the two-deep that are freshmen or sophomores.• Tulsa has the 11th most sophomores or freshmen on the two-deep in the nation, while Virginia has the most with 34.• Tulsa and Tulane are tops in Conference USA for underclassmen on the two-deep.

YOUTHFUL DEFENSE . . .• In the season opener, Tulsa had seven new starters on the defensive unit, including two juniors, three sophomores, one red-shirt freshman and one true freshman.• Tulsa has 13 players on its 22-man defensive two-deep who are either freshmen or sophomores.• Tulsa's four defensive line starters each started their first career game in the season opener against Bowling Green . . . three players in the secondary started their first career game in the opener as well.

NINE PLAYERS GET FIRST START IN OPENER . . . • Nine players made their first career start for Tulsa in the season opener at Bowling Green this year, including seven on defense and two on offense.• Juniors Brentom Todd and Chris Hummingbird, sophomores Derrick Luetjen, Michael Mudoh and Bradley White, redshirt freshmen Darnell Walker Jr., and true freshman Jesse Brubaker earned their first career starts on defense. • Junior Davis Walton and sophomore Derek Patterson earned their first career starts on offense.• Sophomore defensive end Derrick Alexander and true freshman fullback Chris Hall received their first collegiate starts in Tulsa's second game.

NAIL-BITERS• Tulsa's last two home games, dating back to the 2012 season, have gone down to the last minutes and have been decided in walk-off fashion.• In the 2012 C-USA Championship game against UCF, Tulsa tied the score at the 5:04 mark on a 54-yard Trey Watts punt return . . . Tulsa then blocked a field goal in the first OT and scored on a one-yard Alex Singleton plunge.• This year in Tulsa's first home game vs. Colorado State, Tulsa tied the score 27-27 at the 7:01 mark, and then a 45-yard Trey Watts run with less than 0:30 remaining in the game set up a 34-yard Carl Salazar game-winning field goal as time expired.

SUCCESS IN LAST 11 YEARS . . . • The first three years of 2000’s were lean for the Tulsa football, posting just a 7-28 combined record in 2000, 2001 and 2002.• Since 2003, Tulsa has an 85-48 (.639) overall record . . . the 85 wins ranks as the 21st most wins in the country over that time span.• In 2012, Tulsa made its eighth Bowl game appearance in the past 10 seasons in and has a 5-3 Bowl record.• Tulsa has won two outright C-USA Championships (2005 and 2012), four C-USA West Division titles (2005, 2007, 2008, 2012) and shared one West crown (2010).

TULSA HAS 49 C-USA TITLES IN FIRST EIGHT YEARS . . . Since joining Conference USA on July 1, 2005, period Tulsa athletic teams have won a league-best 49 Confer-ence USA Championships over that time, including regular season and post-season tournament titles. Tulsa Football Game Notes 2013 • page 6FIVE PLAYERS NAMED TO C-USA PRESEASON TEAM . . . • Tulsa had five Tulsa players earn preseason all-conference honors as voted on by the league’s coaches. • Tulsa had two players each on offense and defense and one on special teams. • Offensive linemen Jake Alexander, a junior, and senior Stetson Burnett were chosen to the team, while on defense, seniors Shawn Jackson at linebacker and safety Demarco Nelson were picked to the preseason team. • Running Back and kick return specialist Trey Watts was selected as the pre season pick for punt returner.

CAREER-BESTS FOR DEFENSIVE PLAYERS IN THE SEASON OPENER . . .• In the season opener, three Tulsa defensive players had career-bests for tackles –– Michael Mudoh had 17, Mitchell Osborne had 11 and Trent Martin had 10.• Mudoh's previous best was 8 vs. UTEP, Martin's was 9 vs. Nicholls State and Osborne's was 7 stops vs. UTEP, all of those previous highs came last year.• Mudoh's 17 tackles was the most for a Tulsa player since Curnelius Arnick had 17 on Dec. 30, 2011 against BYU in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl.

TULSA GETS GOOD WATTAGE FROM TREY . . .• Senior Trey Watts not only carries the ball out of the backfield for the Hurricane, but the former walk-on catches the ball out of the backfield, and was Tulsa's leading kick and punt returner in 2012.• Watts now has 4,558 career all-purpose yards in four years.• He has tallied 2,346 yards rushing, 848 receiving yards, 1,149 kickoff return yards and 215 punt return yards in his career.• He began the 2013 season with 122 all-purpose yards in the season opener, and had 247 all-purpose yards in the second game against Colorado State.• Watts' career-best for all-purpose yardage was 255 yards in 2012 at Marshall.• In 2012, Watts totaled 2,191 all-purpose yards as he led Tulsa in rushing (1,108), kick returns yards (586) and punt returns (154).• This preseason, Watts was named to the Watch Lists for the Doak Walker Award, for the top running back; The Maxwell Award, for the top player; and the Hornung Trophy, for the most versatile player in college football.

DOUBLE TROUBLE AT TAILBACK . . . • The Tulsa backfield has a two-headed monster in the likes of senior running backs Trey Watts and Ja’Terian Douglas.• They entered this season as the running back duo to put up the second-most rushing and receiving yards that returned to college football this year . . . with 2,394 yards (2044 rushing, 350 receiving), they ranked behind Kent State's duo of Dri Archer and Trayion Durham who had 3,487 yards (2745 rushing, 742 receiving) at the start of the season.• In their first three seasons together, the duo combined for 4,340 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns in their three seasons together.• After two games in 2013, they have now totaled 4,565 rushing yards and 21 TDs.• Watts, a former walk-on, has 2,346 career rushing yards and 7 TDs on 431 carries for a 5.4 average, while catching 71 passes for 848 yards and 5 TDs.• Watts ranks 7th on the school's career rushing list.• Douglas has tallied 2,219 career rushing yards and 14 TDs on 317 carries for a 7.0 average and ranks 9th on the school's career rushing chart.• They have combined for 14 career 100-yard rushing games . . . Tulsa Football Game Notes 2013 • page 7HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE ABUNDANT ON THE HURRICANE SIDELINES . . . • Tulsa Head Football Coach Bill Blankenship is entering just his third year as a collegiate head coach, but he had 22 years as a head coach on the prep level.• Blankenship also has three former college head coaches on his staff –– Defensive Coordinator Brent Guy, Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Line Coach Denver Johnson and Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator and Tight Ends Coach Scott Downing.• Guy spent four seasons (2005-08) as the head coach at Utah State.• Johnson was a head coach for 12 seasons, spending three seasons at Murray State (1997-99) and nine years at Illinois State (2000-08) . . . he compiled an overall 69-66 record at the two schools.• Downing was the head coach at Northern Colorado for five seasons (2006-10).• Only three other FBS programs have three former collegiate head coaches on their coaching staffs as assistant coaches –– Georgia Tech, San Diego State and Virginia.

CODY WILSON GETS C-USA POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP . . . • For the second straight year, a Tulsa football student-athlete was honored with the Conference USA’s Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship Award.• One recipient from each C-USA school is awarded the honor . . . last year’s Tulsa recipient was also a football player, offensive lineman Gabe Moyer.• Wilson graduated with his bachelor’s degree in communication in December 2011 and is currently pursuing his graduate degree in Education.• He had a 3.304 grade point average as an undergraduate and has maintained a 3.778 GPA in graduate school.• Wilson has played in 29 career games, including all 14 games a year ago for the Hurricane.

TULSA HAS 47-17 RECORD IN C-USA PLAY . . . • Entering its’ ninth year as a member of Conference USA, the Hurricane has posted a 47-17 regular season record as a C-USA member for a .734 winning percentage.• Tulsa has won at least six league games five times, including three 7-1 seasons (2007, 2011 and 2012).• Tulsa has now captured the C-USA West Division title four times outright (2005, 2007, 2008 and 2012), while sharing the West Division crown in 2010.• Tulsa has won two overall C-USA crowns (2005 and 2012).

TULSA NOW 22-6 AGAINST C-USA EAST DIVISION FOES . . . • Although the look of Conference USA has changed this season, Tulsa still enters the year with an overall 22-6 record against C-USA East Division foes, including 20-4 in the regular season and 2-2 in the league's title game.• East Division foes on the Tulsa schedule this season include East Carolina and Marshall.• Tulsa has gone 7-0 against C-USA East Division foes over the last two seasons.• Tulsa went 4-0 last year against the East Division with wins at UAB (49-42), at Marshall (45-38), and twice against UCF at home, including a 23-21 win in the regular season and a 33-27 win in the C-USA Championship Game.• Tulsa won its first nine games against Eastern Division opponents.• Tulsa was 7-0 in its first two seasons in the league against the East . . . time, Tulsa has won a total of 49 conference chanpionships. In football, Tulsa has won two

league titles and has played in the championship game four times.

WHAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT TULSA'S FOOTBALL TRADITION . . .

• Tulsa was the first school to play in five straight New Years Day Bowl Games –– Sun Bowl (1-1-42), Sugar Bowl (1-1-43), Sugar Bowl (1-1-44), Orange Bowl (1-1-45) and Oil Bowl (1-1-46).

• Ellis Jones, an All-American guard in 1945, was a one-armed player. He was the defensive standout for the College All-Star team vs. the Chicago Bears in 1945.

• Three former TU football players are enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. They are Bob St. Clair, Jim Finks and Steve Largent.

• Two former Tulsa players finished runner-up in the Heisman Trophy voting –– quarterback Jerry Rhome in 1964 and receiver Howard Twilley in 1965.

• Perhaps the greatest Tulsa foot-ball player of all-time is Glenn Dobbs (1940-42). He was also head coach of the Hurricane teams in the 1960's. Eighth Street which runs north of H.A. Chapman Stadium was dedicated as Glenn Dobbs Drive on Oct. 21, 2000. A statue of Dobbs was erected outside the stadium before the 2013 spring game.

• Former TU players –– Glenn Dobbs, Howard Twilley and Jerry Rhome –– are enshrined in the College Football Founda-tion Hall of Fame.

• Some other former TU players went on to the NFL –– Steve Largent, Drew Pearson, Rickey Watts, Don Blackmon, David Alexander, Jerry Ostroski, Gus Frerotte, Dennis Byrd, Tom Miner, Steve August and Gus Frerotte –– to name a few.

• Coaching in the NFL –– Tulsa has had four former players serve as head coaches in the NFL –– Tommy Hudspeth (Detroit Lions); Sam Rutigliano (Cleve-land Browns); Ray Rhodes (Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers); and Lovie Smith (Chicago Bears). Current Jacksonville defensive coordinator Bob Babich is also a Tulsa graduate.

• Tulsa has three former players and two former coaches who have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. The players are Glenn Dobbs, who also coached the Hurricane, Howard Twilley and Jerry Rhome . . . the coaches are Francis Schmidt (1919-21) and John Cooper (1977-84).

THE TAIL OF THE PUNT . . .• The punting game has put the Hurricane in some precarious positions in the first two games, giving the opposing offense the ball at the Tulsa 2, 8 and 16-yard lines• In a season opening 34-7 loss at Bowling Green, the Falcons scored 21 points in the fourth quarter, all coming on punt team miscues –– the first coming after a fake punt failed, resulting in a 4-play, 16-yard drive; the second after a fumbled punt was recovered at the Tulsa eight-yard line; and the third coming on a 67-yard punt return.• A week later in the home opener against Colorado State, a blocked punt gave CSU the ball at the Tulsa 2-yard line, where the Rams punched it in for a TD . . . another fumbled punt put CSU at the Tulsa 45-yard line, but the Hurricane did not relinquish any points.

TULSA WITH 40+ POINTS AND 500+ YARDS . . .• Tulsa has scored 40+ points eight times in the Bill Blankenship era (27 games) and has surpassed 500 yards seven times as well.• The most recent 500-40 game for Tulsa came at Houston in 2012 when the Hurricane gained 505 yards and scored 41 points. • Since 2007 when Blankenship joined the coaching staff as an assistant coach the Hurricane has now scored 40+ points 34 times and has had 40 games of gaining over 500 yards in total offense.• Tulsa also had back-to-back games in 2012 with 40+ points and 550+ yards against Tulane and Nicholls State.• In just the second game in 2012, Tulsa amassed 651 yards for a 7.5 average per play and scored 45 points against Tulane.• The 600 yards was the most for Tulsa since tallying 682 total yards last year against Marshall in Game #10.• A week later, Tulsa had 66 points and 566 yards in a win over Nicholls State.
