It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to our second annual theatre season presented by Sunshine Coast Council. In 2012 we delivered a diverse selection of live theatre performances from across the country at our venues, Nambour Civic Centre, The J and Lake Kawana Community Centre.

2013 promises to be bigger and better with an exciting variety of entertainment including ballet, comedy, indigenous storytelling, music and drama, featuring some companies that will be performing on the Sunshine Coast for the first time.

For children and families, we will present enchanting stories and fun for all ages. We welcome Flipside Circus, one of the country’s leading youth circus companies to the coast for holiday workshops and shows.

Sunshine Coast Council has an ongoing commitment to supporting cultural engagement and creative innovation within the community.

I encourage you to take advantage of our subscription season and enjoy what is on offer on the coast.

Infinite Space is a breathtaking example of classical dance re-interpreted to inspire both new and loyal ballet audiences. It will entrance audiences as it takes them on a choreographic journey through four acclaimed and original works, all brought to life by a uniquely talented dance ensemble.

‘In One Day’ - Choreographed by Simon Hoy and Robert Kelly, to the music of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. This is a 35 minute work that is remembered for it’s sheer physicality and athleticism.

‘Dark Before Daylight’ - Featuring the classical pointe shoe and tutus. Dark Before Daylight is an impression of the timeless story of Swan Lake. Choreographed by Simon Hoy to the music of Elgar.

‘Phrased Without Word’ - Choreographed by Simon Hoy to Arvo Pärt’s Spiegel in Spiegel. ‘Phrased Without Word’ is a breathtaking physical expression of this score.

‘Infinite Space’ - Choreographed by Simon Hoy to the music of Mozart’s 27th Piano Concerto. ‘Infinite Space’ has become a signature piece for the Melbourne Ballet Company and is an uplifting celebration of hope and beauty.

Animal Farm, one of the most controversial and studied political commentaries arrives in a brand new production combining physical theatre and storytelling. George Orwell’s simple yet intensely powerful fairy tale illustrates how greed and absolute power corrupts absolutely and, with devastating consequences, can change the course of history.

Directed by Michael Futcher and brought to life by shake & stir theatre co and a cast of Queensland’s most dynamic actors, Animal Farm promises to be one of the most shocking, exciting, relevant and wickedly funny theatre events in 2013.

Friends. You love ‘em, but sometimes you just can’t understand ‘em. Especially when they do something completely different and unexpected ... something that makes you wonder how they ever became your friends in the first place.

Serge, Marc and Yvan find their previously solid 15-year friendship on shaky ground when Serge buys an expensive painting. The canvas is white, with a few white lines.

Serge is proud of his acquisition, fully expecting the approval of his friends. His best friend, Marc, hates it. Marc can’t believe that any friend of his could possibly want such a thing. Enter Yvan – the mutual friend, the go-between, the meat in the sandwich.

The question is: Are you who you think you are? Or are you who your friends think you are?

A hit in the West End, Broadway and all around the world. ART is the recipient 1998 Tony Award for Best Play and Laurence Olivier Award for Best Comedy.

Tasmania’s newest theatre company, Blue Cow Theatre, has scored a triple bull’s-eye with its first production, ART.

Uncle Jack Charles is an Australian legend: veteran actor, Koori elder, activist and, until recently, heroin addict and cat-burglar.

This is a show about his life – told by him.

From Stolen Generation to Koori theatre in the 70s, from film sets to Her Majesty’s prisons, Jack Charles V The Crown runs the gamut of a life lived to its utmost. Charles’ unswerving optimism transforms this tale of addiction, crime and doing time into a kind of vagabond’s progress – a map of the traps of dispossession and a guide to reaching the age of grey-haired wisdom.

This fleet-footed, light-fingered one-man show is a theatrical delight and a celebration of Black Australia’s dogged refusal to give up on getting on.

A powerful one-man show that shines the spotlight on the colourful life of one of Australia’s near forgotten treasures. Jack is an actor, musician, potter and gifted performer, but for a good portion of his nearly 70 years he has also been homeless, an addict, a thief and a regular in Victoria’s prisons. Warning: Adult Themes. Recommended 12yrs+

Mary Shelley’s classic tale re-imagined in a spine-tingling new version – not for the faint-hearted.

Forced to survive in the real world, a man-made creature soon loses his child-like innocence and transforms into an adult being … an adult with bitterness, lust, vengeance and deadly reasoning.

The Creature is cast out by his creator, the young doctor Frankenstein, and unleashed upon the world. He is shunned for his grotesque appearance and spurned by society wherever he goes. When a blind man takes Frankenstein’s monstrous creation under his wing and educates him, the Creature begins to question his existence and to yearn for a future without loneliness.

His search for a lifelong partner brings him back to his maker, with vengeance foremost in his mind.

8am, Sunday morning. Q: What’s wrong? A: You’re not at Bunnings.

It’s the ultimate man-shed. Two acres of timber, tools and trellises, guaranteed to make your man-ovaries ache. It’s a fantasy supermarket where dreams and wobbly bookshelves are made.

Harley Breen has two brothers, they’re both carpenters. He likes going to Bunnings to look at things he could make if they were around to fix them.

Harley Breen has blown away audiences from the sugarcane fringes of Bundaberg to the sweaty stages of the Edinburgh Fringe. Regularly headlining around Australia, Harley has won over a legion of fans with his accessible and relatable comedy.

A suburban hermit’s life unravels when confronted by his own dark secrets in this suspenseful drama. Under an ochre sky something happened at Mt Ragged. The incident inspired celebrated bush poet Daniel Gartrell’s most analysed poem. It is missing its final verse, and the events that occurred at Mt Ragged, not to mention the poet himself, are a mystery. Now an enigma, Gartrell (Max Gillies) lives as a recluse in the suburbs, his only contact is with his daughter. Gartrell is at home, thinking very oblique thoughts when an emerging actor (Samuel Johnson) knocks on his door. Ambitious and optimistic, he has been cast to play Gartrell in a biographical movie, and in his research for the role, is ready for anything. But if he wants to know where Gartrell’s poetry comes from and understand his state of mind when he writes, he must, in a sense, become him. Gartrell leads him on a merry chase, evading inquiries and playing unhinged mind games. This is a play that offers something for everyone. Audiences are sure to experience a journey that stretches their senses, hits their funny bone and delivers a poignant message for all. An accessible yet edgy play that invites audiences to sit back and reflect on how our secrets and our past can shape who we are.

The perfect girls’ night out!

Annie Byron brings all her charm and humour to Connie, a woman of a certain age who wants to believe that finding a romantic love is not the impossible dream. Bravely she enters the online dating jungle and soon discovers that what you see is probably not what you get, there is no such thing as a free cup of coffee and that having John Clarke as your romantic ideal may be setting the bar just a little too high.

Based on Andee Jones’ bestselling book Kissing Frogs, it brings a humorous twist to those pressing questions about love such as, why is it so hard to find and even harder to keep? Is romantic love the impossible dream and how do you know Mr Right even when you find him?

Disco: The Vinyl Solution is a 70 minute, biting, stand-up/physical comedy show with a serious core. It’s the sister show to Fiona’s previous award-winning show, The Needle and the Damage Done. Fiona Scott-Norman is a Melbourne-based comedian, satirist, broadcaster and DJ, whose first solo show, The Needle and the Damage Done, toured to over 70 regional Australian centres and venues, from the Sydney Opera House to Alice Springs and Burnie.

Hilarious, informed, and scathing, Disco is basically the ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ of electronic dance music. Disco elegantly and articulately concludes that the world’s been going to hell in a handbasket since we stopped touching each other on the dance floor.

Directed by Tim Ferguson (ex-Doug Anthony Allstars and Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush), Disco is fearless and funny. If you think modern music is ‘rubbish’, but don’t want to say it out loud for fear of sounding ‘old’, this is the show for you.

Warning: Uses words of more than two syllables.

FLUFFHave you ever wondered where lost toys go?

Fluff, a delightful story of what happened to a group of mismatched hand-made toys that have unfortunately been lost by the people who cherished them most…but found again by the caring and sweetly nutty Gingham family.

Meet Fluff who was dropped under the couch then sucked up by the vacuum cleaner, Squibbly who was abandoned in the gutter by the family dog, and the Disco Frog who got caught in a ceiling fan.

Master of eccentricity and mistress of comedy, Christine Johnston has created a delightful show along with dancer Lisa O’Neill and electronica musician Peter Nelson, which touches the hearts of children and their adults. Enjoy a mix of physical comedy, playful dance, music, voice and whimsical characters. This is a simple, joyful and humorous tale for children, told with a twist.
